The Aug. 24 front-page article "Al-Qaeda Masters Terrorism on the Cheap" reported that the terrorist group's attacks cost very little and cited this "news" as "evidence that the U.S. government and its allies fundamentally miscalculated in assuming they could defeat the network by hunting for wealthy financiers and freezing bank accounts." The article's premise was flawed: We have never assumed that such actions alone could defeat al-Qaeda. Rather, combating terrorist financing is just part of a comprehensive counterterrorism strategy. ...

Many, many years ago I was privileged to study American regional dialects with one of the leading dialectologists of that era, Raven I. McDavid. It was a career-changing experience for me because he taught me the sheer joy of gathering and analyzing the actual language spoken by everyday people in everyday settings. The focus of [...] ... In the coming days, look for representatives of big media organizations to describe how aggressively they were reporting on the Edwards story -- and how they were this close to having something to publish or broadcast when Edwards short-circuited the story by confessing to the Hunter affair. ... The Raleigh News & Observer has a statement from Fred Baron, the Texas trial lawyer who was finance chairman of John Edwards' campaign and who paid to relocate Rielle Hunter and the Andrew Young family from North Carolina to California. From the News & Observer: 'I decided independently to help two friends and former colleagues rebuild their lives when harassment by supermarket tabloids made it impossible for them to conduct a normal life,' Baron, a Dallas trial lawyer said in a statement, Rob Christensen reports. 'John Edwards was not aware that assistance was provided to anyone involved in this matter,' Baron said. 'I did it of my own voilition and without the knowledge, instruction, or suggestion of John Edwards or anyone else. The assistance was offered and accepted without condition.' Hunter and Young, the recipients of Baron's generosity, were not high-ranking officials in the Edwards campaign. How Baron got to know them and how he decided to fund their move to California, and why he decided to do so without Edwards' knowledge, might be the subject of more questions as the Edwards matter goes forward. ... From the New York Times: When The Enquirer first reported the affair, a group of Edwards associates, including from past campaigns, assembled at his headquarters to try to stop the story from moving from the tabloid into major newspapers. They declined to respond to questions or issue any statements that might produce news reports, according to those involved in the effort. It was led by Jennifer Palmieri, a longtime associate of both Mr. and Mrs. Edwards. But by this summer, the team had shrunk. Ms. Palmieri managed the crisis again, working mainly with Mr. Edwards and Harrison Hickman, Mr. Edwards's longtime pollster. Initially Mr. Edwards argued that he could ride out the latest report, but several associates said that if they were not true, he should denounce them. All in all, it was a pretty darned successful effort, until now. Watching CNN this evening, it seems the coverage has gone from total silence to wretched excess. Does the story merit several consecutive hours of coverage? Not by any measure. First, Edwards wasn't important enough to merit coverage. Now, he's on wall-to-wall. ...
