According to The Hollywood Reporter, Steven Spielberg remains committed to directing the first in a planned “Tintin" trilogy for DreamWorks despite Brussels’ Herge Studios false claims to the contrary. It will be his next directing effort after this summer’s $780 million-worldwide-grossing “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” Herge Studios, which holds the rights to the iconic comic strip character, said Tuesday via a spokesman that Peter Jackson was moving into the director’s chair for the first film. But both Jackson’s and Spielberg’s camps say that Jackson in fact remains attached to direct the sequel, though he will still be a producer on the first. In the meantime, Jackson will finish postproduction on “The Lovely Bones” for DreamWorks/Paramount before moving on to co-write the two “Hobbit" movies for New Line and MGM. The first “Tintin” feature will be based on two of the books, “The Secret of the Unicorn” and “Red Rackham’s Treasure,” written by Tintin creator Herge between 1942 and 1944. The film, scripted by ”Doctor Who” and “Coupling” writer Stephen Moffat, will be animated with motion-capture technology and star 18-year-old Thomas Sangster as Tintin and Andy Serkis as his friend Captain Haddock. ... Casting associate Tineka Becker (The Lovely Bones) is slated to cast Steven Spielberg’s big-screen adaptation of the popular Belgian comic strip Tintin. Confirmation that Thomas Sangster was taking the lead ? Cast members that would join Andy Serkis ? Any indication, at all, that the film was going to start shooting next month ? Nope. But a tiny update comes courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter , although it's more like a baby controversy. Herge Studios, holders of Tintin's rights, claimed today that Peter Jackson was moving into the director's chair for the first film, replacing Steven Spielberg. Both Spielberg and Jackson have denied that this is the case, and that Spielberg is still attached to direct the first Tintin installment, Jackson the second. Not even Abraham Lincoln will get in the way, it is the next film on his agenda. No start date has been announced, though. THR is also reporting that Thomas Sangster is starring as the motion captured Tintin, so at least that's official now. Perhaps the most interesting news in all of this official spokesperson stuff is the blurb about which books are being adapted for the big screen. The first film (scripted by Doctor Who's Steven Moffat ) will be based on The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure . Now that's worthy of discussion! What do you Tintin fans ...
Guillermo del Toro has stated quite categorically that he wants as many of the stars from The Lord Of The Rings trilogy back for The Hobbit . But even del Toro can’t always get what he wants, and he has had his first let-down. Okay, it’s unlikely to be that much of a let-down when the actor in question hasn’t even been asked to come back for the new two-part adaptation of The Hobbit , but John Noble, who played Denethor in The Lord Of The Rings would say no even if asked, and that’s disappointing. Noble told MTV Movies : “They haven’t consulted me. I know Ian McKellan is coming back, and Andy Serkis will be — he’s very much associated with it, and he’s a terrific artist. Ian [Holm] is not a young man, so I don’t know what they’ll do with that. But I don’t think they’ll have Denethor back.” “If they said, ‘Would you come and play Denethor again, I would have to say, ‘No, I’m doing [new J.J. Abrams television series] ‘Fringe’! Rumors have been circulating recently that Steven Spielberg would no longer be directing the first film in the Tintin trilogy for Dreamworks. Although Peter Jackson was slated to direct the sequel, the recent buzz around town was that the Lord of the Rings director would be stepping into the director's chair for the first film in place of Spielberg.
