Andrew Ladd scored in the second round for the only goal of the shootout, lifting the Chicago Blackhawks to a 4-3 preseason victory over the Dallas Stars on Thursday night. Ladd's shot from the slot went in off goalie Marty Turco. Chicago's Antti Niemi stopped Sean Avery in the third round to clinch the win for the Blackhawks. Kevyn Adams scored the tying goal late in regulation, Aaron Johnson had a power-play goal, and Kris Versteeg scored short-handed for Chicago (4-1-1). ... Source: www.guardian.co.uk --- 8 days ago

According to this splendid nest of football gossip and humour, Dennis Wise's dream team - which was found after a scrap of paper fell out of his pocket in an East End pie and mash shop - for Newcastle United includes Gary Oldman in defence with Danny Baker up front and Dick Van Dyke as the the new caretaker manager. While the above may not be wholly true, if you're concerned about Gary Lineker's girlfriend or the latest WAG standings this is the place to keep up. Elsewhere there's news, rumours, videos and a "Sporn" gallery of sporting photos that could be mistaken for something mildly unsettling. This is a video-sharing animation site that's offering cash rewards for the most popular content, and the chance to get seen by the big suits at Channel 4 and pitch for real TV work. With Lupus Films and Aardman Animations involved, there are also plenty of household names on the site - including Angry Kid and Spitting Image - as well as loads of archive shows, like Crapston Villas and the Oscar-winning short Bob's Birthday. Carmakers are pushing the European commission for a €40bn (£32bn) "green" bail-out plan to help them meet stringent EU limits on carbon emissions, it emerged yesterday. Sergio Marchionne, Fiat's chief executive, said in Paris that the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) would approach the commission for a loan. The US Congress last weekend approved a $25bn loan to the American motor industry, which is struggling to compete with smaller, "green" cars imported from Asia, to help it modernise plants and produce environmentally friendly cars. The ACEA approach, said to have been approved unanimously by its 15 members, comes at a politically highly charged moment over the car industry's contribution to fighting climate change. Last week the European parliament's environment committee overturned the views of MEPs on the industry committee and voted for a 17% reduction in car emissions by 2012. Peter Siddle's inclusion to Australia's Test squad to play four matches in India has given Victoria reason to believe more cricketers can emerge from that state, reports Lyall Johnson in the Age . Since the retirement of Damien Fleming in 2001 only Shane two Victorians have played Test cricket - the legend Shane Warne, who himself called it quits in 2007, and Brad Hodge, who managed six games. Yet this summer, Victoria could have as many as seven players wearing Australian colours: Siddle, McGain and White — the latter called up yesterday — at Test level, with Hodge and David Hussey also in contention in either one-day international or Twenty-20. Further down the list, but still very much in the sights of the selectors, are West Australian recruit Chris Rogers, who has already played a Test match and all-rounder Andrew McDonald. ... In the Age , Chloe Saltau writes that the Australian under the most pressure in India is not Ricky Ponting or Jason Krejza or Mitchell Johnson. It’s Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors. For the first time in more than a decade, a period in which Australian cricket was so flush with talent that the biggest decisions were about who to leave out rather than who to pick, the focus settles squarely on Hilditch and his men, Merv Hughes, Jamie Cox and David Boon. Whatever happens in the next three days, they will have to gamble on an uncapped and untried bowler to support the relatively established pace trio of Brett Lee, Stuart Clark and Mitchell Johnson, who nevertheless have not played a Test in India between them. Nor do Cameron White, Jason Krejza and rising Victorian paceman Peter Siddle — the three candidates for the last bowling spot — have a baggy green between them, but that would not be of such concern if they, like so many of the ready-made replacements the selectors have been able to turn to during the changing of the guard in recent years, had extensive qualifications in first-class cricket. Jon Pierik in the Daily Telegraph considers a few of the problems facing Australia in this series. ... Source: zipsnation.org --- 4 days ago
It's already half way through the season and the Zips are 3-3. A nice start, but it could have been even better. Here are my grades for the positions on the team for the past 6 games. Offense: QB = B- Jacq has our offense looking much better than last year, and he seems to have a confidence that was lacking at this point a year ago. He has thrown too many INTs, but most of them are because his WRs have developed a case of butterfingers. He manages the game well, but when he tries to do too much things fall apart. RB = B+ The running game looked to be our strength early in the season with tons of depth. Now we are down to one of the three RBs we started with and this unit hasn't looked as good. They do enough to keep opposing defenses honest but unless Andrew Johnson returns soon or Devoe Torrence has his redshirt removed, we run the risk of becoming one-dimensional on offense. WR = B- Who would have thought they would be a strength before the season started? The dropped passes need to stop, but they routinely come up big when the game is on the line. Put some stickum on their gloves and I would rate them as an A+ TE = C- Where are you, Poindexter? We try to get you into the offense, but you drop more balls than the WRs. You block OK, but we could really use a pair of sure hands out there. FB = B Joe Tuzze needs to see the ball more. He is now our most consistent runner and he has proven himself a capable tailback when needed. His bloc ... Source: lakersblog.latimes.com --- 3 days ago
Forget the Chinese Magic Johnson comparisons. At least in regards to significant others, Lakers rook Sun Yue is more like the Chinese Marko Jaric. In other news, Phil Jackson, who missed Tuesday night's preseason opener with swelling and pain in his legs, was back at practice Wednesday, and wasn't impressed with the work of Lamar Odom's performance at the Honda Center. "I just got through telling him that this is really basketball now," Jackson said this afternoon. "He looks like he's either curling or doing some other kind of sport. He's not playing basketball." On the brighter side, Andrew Bynum... ... Source: blogs.independent.co.uk --- 9 days ago

The seventh Chartered Institute of Public Relations Northern Conference took place last Friday at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall attracting 120 delegates from all over the UK. It was our third as Don’t Panic and continues to be the biggest and best CIPR event outside of London with a line up which would put most conferences in the capital to shame. Keynotes included Katie Perrior of InHouse PR on Boris Johnson’s campaign for London mayor; Phil Hall of PHA Media on celebrity crises; Paul Newman of Liverpool Capital of Culture on the rise of all things Scouse and Alex Aiken of Westminster City Council . Delegates also chose to attend four of the following master class sessions: Reputation - Andrew Fairburn, Regester Larkin ; Creativity - Andy Green, GREEN Communications ; Crisis Communications - Jenny Hails, Hull City Council ; Media City - Brian Greasley & Jason Leggett, MediaCityUK ; CSR - Justin McKeown & Paul Thomas, Trimedia ; Social Media - Stephen Davies, 3W PR ; Budgeting - Paul Willis, Leeds Business School ; Ethical PR - Elaine Mitchell Hill, Koan ; Futurology - Neville Hobson . It’s rare to see such unanimously high feedback for an event but every delegate who responded marked the conference, venue and organisation as either excellent or good. I think that says a lot about the commitment of all those involved in the Northern Conference, the calibre of our speakers and the kind of content which is vital to the future of the pub ... One of two young men who killed four students and a teacher at a middle school a decade ago faces up to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to theft and marijuana possession. Mitchell Johnson, now 24, entered his plea Tuesday before a Benton County circuit judge. Sentencing was set for Nov. 14. He was accused of taking a debit card left by a disabled man at the gas station where he worked. Police said that when Johnson was arrested Feb. 2, he was in possession of marijuana. In March 1998, Johnson, then 13, and classmate Andrew Golden, 11, stole guns from Golden's grandfather and opened fire at Westside Middle School in Jonesboro. It was one of a series of school shootings that shocked the nation in the late 1990s. They waited in camouflage atop a hill after Golden triggered a fake fire alarm, then opened fire on classmates and teachers leaving the school. ... Source: www.kentucky.com --- 9 days ago
