She was the voice of the world's biggest family band. Now Andrea Corr is reinventing herself as a stage actress. She talks success, failure and fiddles with Sam Leith The last time I interviewed Andrea Corr, she had just stepped off stage at a concert in Hyde Park. Breathless had recently been announced as the Corrs' first UK No 1, and the band had just performed in front of 100,000 people. She was 26 years old - a pop star in panda-black eye makeup and a costume made of handkerchiefs. She, her sisters Caroline and Sharon, and her brother Jim were the biggest family band in the world. Nine years on, the Corrs are no longer recording together, and things for their youngest member have changed a bit. The night before we meet, she passed up watching the Brit awards to go out on the town with 80-year-old playwright Brian Friel. And tomorrow night she makes her first ever stage appearance, in Friel's Dancing at Lughnasa at the Old Vic in London. The play centres on the lives of five sisters in rural Ireland in the 1930s, so this is not tokenistic, big-star-drops-by-for-a-fortnight theatre. She will be performing a long run in a play about circumscribed lives and romantic disappointment. The character she was originally asked to read for is a simpleton who spends the entire production wearing wellington boots. "My agent said to go for Rose," she says. Andrea Jane Corr MBE (born May 17, 1974) is an Irish singer, and an actress. Corr debuted in 1990 as the frontwoman of the Celtic folk rock and pop rock group, The Corrs which consists of herself and her three siblings, Caroline, Sharon and Jim. As a band, they are notable for their hit singles, including their debut "Runaway" and "Breathless." Aside from singing lead vocals, she can play the tin whistle and the piano which was taught by her father. With The Corrs she has released five studio albums, two compilation albums, one remix album and two live albums. The Corrsare currently on hiatus because Sharon, Jim and Caroline are raising their children, so Andrea is pursuing a solo career, releasing her debut album, Ten Feet High, in 2007. The album moved away from the folk-rock genre of The Corrs and features a darker, edgier dance-pop sound. Andrea is involved in philanthropic acitivies. She has played charity concerts to raise money for the Pavarotti & Friends Liberian Children's Village, Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, the victims of the Omagh bombing in Northern Ireland and The Prince's Trust in 2004.
