No one can say no to a lover who is proposing during a cruise. What’s more if he proposes while on board a classic Ship? Romance, love, affection [...] ...

I have never been on a cruise Ship, but I'm intrigued by the concept. I enjoy travel, but I'm not so sure I enjoy travel ing . My favorite travel generally involves sitting around somewhere new and reading, and generally there's an awful lot of fuss and bother required just to be able to sit and read among majestic glaciers or Ancient Mayan ruins. So you can see why the cruise Ship model compels. It's not so much going places as going to a single place, and then that place goes places. It is travel without movement, a Zen koan with a seafood buffet. Alt Text Podcast Download audio files and subscribe to the Alt Text podcast . However, the activities promoted on cruise line ads -- sunbathing, dancing, paying ridiculous prices for Central American tchotchkes -- belong to the sort of tanned newlyweds I am not. Rather than paying $1,500 to sit in my room reading, I've started to look into more geek-themed cruise packages. I'd be happy to share my data. Chess Cruise I kind of feel bad for not enjoying the chess. I feel like a biker who doesn't like knife fights. (I don't actually like knife fights, either.) However, if you enjoy the chess, and want to be trapped on a moving vessel with dozens of other people who enjoy the chess, and have a bunch of cash to blow on playing a game that's normally free, then the Caribbean Gambit Chess Cruise is for you. The site says that people who are new to chess are welcome as well, but I'm not sure ...

If you’ve already put in a pre-order for the Collector’s Edition of Fable II and were anxiously awaiting the day when you could have a Hobbe figure of your own, then you’re going to be in for a disappointment. Due to a “supply chain issue,” the Fable II Limited Collector’s Edition will unfortunately Ship without the Hobbe figure, the five “Fate” cards, or the premium box (according to Kotaku ). To make up for the lost extras though, Lionhead Studios has dropped the price of this edition from $80 to $70. So you’ll still be left with the “Making of” DVD, plus bonus in-game content like “The Hall of the Dead” dungeon, “The Wreckager” Legendary Cutlass Weapon, and the Spartan armor. It may seem upsetting now, but I doubt you’ll have time to think about that once you’re deeply engrossed in defending the land from an Ancient evil or decorating your ultimate “Adventurer Pad.” ---Related Articles at Gaming Today:Medieval Master Chief Showing Up in Fable 2BioShock Collector's Edition Box Revealed With Included Big DaddyPlayStation (Portable) Store Gets Some Price DropsAmazon's Exclusive Fallout 3 "Survival Edition" Comes With Your Own Pip-Boy 3000Bethesda Reveals Contents of Fallout 3: Collector's Edition ...

Merrill Lynch and Lehman Brothers didn’t need business intelligence software to tell them the U.S. economy was going into the toilet, but I’m sure they had some. They had probably made all the other kinds of technology investments firms of that size are supposed to make. Surely in an industry in which information had to be timely and accurate, they would have purchased the best enterprise applications, virtualized their IT infrastructure and set up a service-oriented architecture. These are (or were) the blue-chip enterprises that IBM, Oracle, HP and others all salivate over. Now those technology assets look like the gold-plated sidings of a Ship belonging to an army defeated in an Ancient war. Senior management at these Wall Street firms, including AIG, would probably have been willing to trade in the idea of a return on their technology investments for mere survival. Analysts from Gartner and Forrester were sanguine about the impact Lehman Brother’s bankruptcy and Merrill Lynch’s acquisition by Bank of America will have on the IT vendor community. They say that the financial enterprises knew there the subprime lending crisis was going to hurt them and they have budgeted accordingly. That’s good news for the OEMs (and for the research firms, whose work is sponsored by them), but it avoids the uncomfortable truth that all dreams we hold about how technology can help achieve business goals have been dashed once more. Financial fir ...

by Tom Engelhardt [Note for AFP readers: Back in February 2007, I wrote of our "forgotten war" in Afghanistan. There, civilians were dying in startling numbers, as they are today, and the Taliban was proving resurgent, as it also is today. I listed a set of grim then-recent headlines about those civilian deaths and added: "So goes the repetitive, if ever deepening, tragedy of our other war — and under such headlines lie massive tragedies that seldom make the headlines anywhere. Ann Jones, who has spent much time as a humanitarian aid worker in Afghanistan these last years and wrote a moving book, Kabul in Winter , on her experiences, turns to one of those tragedies: the fate of Afghan women." A year and a half later, with the U.S. reportedly planning to Ship 12,000-15,000 extra troops to Afghanistan early next year, that tragedy only deepens and, far from turning into Ancient history, Jones's piece might as well have been written yesterday. Or tomorrow — for no matter who becomes president in January 2009, those extra troops are likely to be but an American downpayment on further grim headlines and more suffering for Afghan women. As you may know, this post by Ann Jones is now in print, chapter 14 of The World According to TomDispatch, America in the New Age of Empire (Verso, 2008). It's a book that helps explain tomorrow's headlines. Why not buy a copy for your friends today — or tomorrow? Tom] Surging in Afghanistan: Too Much, To ...

In another article, we talked about designers going to great lengths to make high-tech products resemble obsolete products of the past. It was just one more of several articles we've done, and may well continue to do, on the divide between the technically inclined cognoscenti and, well, everyone else. Today, however, we came across an example of a literally Ancient device updated to the modern age: the idea of a kite-driven Ship, which we learned of via Jack Moffett. Of course, this idea has the beauty of being a very easy sell because of its familiarity, simplicity, and the fact that it actually seems to work. It's the exact inverse of the problem that Richard Ziade discussed last week about certain Internet applications that, while effective, fail to pass what he calls "the mom test." As in "will my ___-year-old mom understand this product." Ziade contrasts e-mail -- which is very much like traditional mail -- with more leading edge applications like OpenID and even relatively tried-and-true apps like RSS feeds. "RSS lacks a real-life sibling to help people understand its purpose and value," Ziande writes. "'It's like subscribing to a magazine' doesn't really cut it." So, before designing a new product for the high-tech era, it's crucial for creators to consider not only whether or not the concept will work, but whether the technologically non-savvy will grasp its usefulness and, if not, just how and whether it's possible to educate ...

In late July I had the good fortune in visiting Turkey to visit the ANZAC memorial war sites (an Australian pilgrimage) and the Ancient city of Troy nearby.  According to Greek mythology Troy was an Ancient city in the Troad region of Anatolia (Turkey). It is presented anachronistically in legend as if it were part of the Greek culture of city-states. Since the entire state comprised more than the city of Troy itself, anyone from its jurisdiction, which was mainly the Troad, might be termed "Trojan" in Ancient literature. An alternative classical Greek and Latin term was "Teucrians", a name taken from an ethnicity of the south Troad. Troy was known for its riches gained from port trade with east and west, fancy clothes, iron production, and massive defensive walls. The major language spoken there and the derivative cultures remain uncertain. Legend for the most part ignores language and makes the presumption that Trojans were fluent in Greek. Troy was built over seven stages (I - VII).  The first city was founded in the 3rd millennium BCE. During the Bronze Age, the site seems to have been a flourishing mercantile city, since its location allowed for complete control of the Dardanelles, through which every merchant Ship from the Aegean Sea heading for the Black Sea had to pass. Today there is a Turkish town called Truva in the vicinity of the archaeological site, but this town has grown up recently to service the tourist trade. Th ...

The Obama campaign keeps the focus on McCain and the economy by going local, spotlighting the plight of workers who were fired after a Corning plant closed in Pennsylvania... How's this for a blast of Ancient history: This Corning plant was actually also the subject of a mailer that Obama dropped during the campaign hitting Hillary for supporting normalizing trade relations with China. The initial mailer was somewhat misleading , wrongly implying that Corning itself had shipped the jobs overseas. But the current spot doesn't repeat those errors, instead saying (accurately) that some of the workers were hired to Ship the materials to China. The ad is running in Pennsylvania and in other key states. ...

Since the passing of the generation of the founding fathers great talent has rarely raised to the top in U.S. politics. The country has suffered the gross incompetence of a succession of political leaders occupying its highest offices. Only the intervention of a favorable tailwind has guided the Ship of state aright. The good fortune which previously prevented the U.S. from drifting astray has not benefited this country with its saving embrace since Bush II took the helm. The latter's impudent and imprudent administration of the affairs of state have brought inestimable ruin and wreckage upon the country and squandered the remaining surplus of its Ancient national genius. ...

Wooden Ship models are built-to-scale representations of modern or Ancient sea-faring vessels. Traditionally, all types of Ship models have been built of wood, though with the advent of plastic and sheet metal, these have been used for amateur kits. Of course, wooden models project grandeur and finesse. The Ancient Egyptians were the pioneers who made detailed [...] ...
