by Livia Indica I've always been fascinated by Ancient Cave paintings. Be they animals, human figures or more abstract images like spirals or odd-shaped symbols there's just something amazing about them. They are the proof that, even in prehistory, our very distant ancestors were not only capable of abstract thought but also capable of expressing themselves. There are many theories attached to these Ancient paintings. The animal images could have been painted to help hunters attract/become/honor the spirits of the animals they would have to kill to survive. The images of vulvae could have been Ancient pornography or, more likely to my mind, meant to promote fertility and the perpetuation of offspring. The symbols and other abstract images could mean just about anything. Considering that what we call shamanism today was the norm back then there were most likely hallucinogenics used that not only opened eyes and minds but inspired the art of the day. But some of the art could have a more down to earth reason behind it. A new study suggests that certain images were painted in certain areas where the acoustics were best. And the only way to test acoustics is to make music. ...

A fragment of the Dead Sea Scrolls, left, as seen by a high-resolution single-wavelength infrared imager, right. JERUSALEM (CNN) -- More than 2,000 years after they were written, the Dead Sea Scrolls are going digital as part of an effort to better preserve the Ancient texts and let more people see them than ever before. The high-tech initiative, announced today, will also reveal text that was previously not visible to the naked eye. Over the next two years, the Israel Antiquities Authority will digitally photograph and scan every bit of crumbling parchment and papyrus that makes up the scrolls, which include the oldest written record of the Bible's Old Testament. The images eventually will be posted on the Internet for anyone to see. "These are the earliest copies of the Bible ever found," said Pnina Shor, head of treatment and conservation at the Antiquities Authority. "The Bible is sacred to us and to you and to all the monotheistic religions, and therefore [the scrolls] are national treasures and world treasures, and therefore it is our duty to preserve them at least for 2,000 years more." It is widely believed that the first set of Dead Sea Scrolls was discovered in 1947 by a Bedouin shepherd who ventured into a Cave in the Judean Desert in search of a lost sheep or goat. The texts were found wrapped in linen inside earthenware jars. Eventually, 11 caves were found to contain scrolls -- some dating back more than 2,000 years ...

'Life and Times of Washington State' is a hands-on adventure that begins 545 million years ago. Richly exotic, yet strangely familiar, this exhibit is a passport through the evolution of the state's geology, biology and archaeology. Starting when most of Washington was covered by an Ancient sea, you'll walk through Dino Times and see giant skeletons of dinosaurs, including a stegosaurus, an elasmosaur, and a 140-million-year-old allosaurus. As you pass these Ancient beasts, look for the stone artifacts from the famous East Wenatchee Clovis Cache, on loan from the Washington State Historical Society. You will see long stone spear points and other artifacts made by Ancient hunters in the state more than 11,000 years ago. Along the way toward Present Times, you'll also walk through a rumbling volcano, climb inside a replica Cave formed when an Ancient rhino was trapped by a lava flow in eastern Washington, and see the oldest baleen whale fossil ever found (28 million years old). ...

(Usually wearing suits) Clip Source: www.independent.co.uk Clip Source: www.guardian.co.uk Strands of DNA recovered from the fossilised leg bone of a Neanderthal have shed light on the fragility of the Ancient population and pinpointed when they first split from what were to become modern humans. The 38,000-year-old bone was unearthed in a Cave in Vindija in Croatia, and has since become part of a landmark project to read the entire genetic sequence of an Ancient human ancestor, a feat scientists believe will help reveal how modern humans evolved into the world's dominant species. Theories of what drove the Neanderthals to extinction range from an inability to adapt to a quickly changing environment, to genocide by early humans. The species is though to have died out in Europe around 30,000 years ago, shortly after the arrival of early humans. Comparing the Neanderthal genome with the human genetic sequence should highlight subtle genetic differences, such as genes for improved brain capacity and other traits that underpin what it means to be human. We broke camp early this day, eager to get water from the faucet we’d heard about at Subway Cave. “While you’re there, check out the Cave,” a local had mentioned the previous day, “and watch out for the Ancient hairy ape man.” Since each town seems to have its own share of wingnuts, we figured Old Station to be just like the rest. Once we walked to the Cave, however, we found that the local had been right. read more ...

Source: Guardian (8-8-08) Strands of DNA recovered from the fossilised leg bone of a Neanderthal have shed light on the fragility of the Ancient population and pinpointed when they first split from what were to become modern humans. The 38,000-year-old bone was unearthed in a Cave in Vindija in Croatia, and has since become part of a landmark project to read the entire genetic sequence of an Ancient human ancestor, a feat scientists believe will help reveal how modern humans evolved into the world's dominant species. Researchers at the Max-Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, read the complete sequence of DNA held in tiny biological powerhouses called mitochondria, which provide energy for cells. The mitochondria are only passed down the female line, so can be used to trace the species back to an ancestral "Eve", the mother of all Neanderthals. The team analysed the DNA of 13 genes from the Neanderthal mitochondria and found they were distinctly different to modern humans, suggesting Neanderthals never, or rarely, interbred with early humans. The genetic material shows that a Neanderthal "Eve" lived around 660,000 years ago, when the species last shared a common ancestor with humans. ...

No one knows just how long map making has been around, but it is almost certain that for 8,000 years humans have used wall maps, and without a shadow of a doubt wall maps preceded writing. We know this because there are wall maps scribed onto the walls of caves by the men and women who lived in them. Also, examples of Ancient maps of Babylon, Greece and Asia have been found by archaeologists and they precede writing in those countries as well. It is easy to say that the very first maps were actually wall maps because early Cave dwellers didnt have parchment or papyrus to draw their maps onto. Therefore, the genesis of map making is indeed the creation of wall maps. So we know how old wall maps are but why did early man decide to take a charred stick and try and record the surrounding area Well, a map is a very powerful thing to posses for so many reasons: strategic, defining ownership and probably more importantly to show others where they could find food and even enemies. The Polynesian people who extensively explored and settled the Pacific islands during the first two millenniums AD used wall maps mounted on their vessels to navigate across large distances. A surviving wall map from the Marshall Islands uses sticks tied in a grid with palm strips representing wave and wind patterns, with shells attached to show the location of islands. Early wall maps would have had one thing in common and that is they would have been reasonably loc ...
