*Rapper also explains what led him to write his book, Thank You and You're Welcome.* After *Kanye West* unveiled the new video for his single "Love Lockdown" on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Tuesday (October 7), he admitted that the clip's modern look was inspired by a chainsaw-wielding maniac. "On this album, I kind of embody *Patrick Bateman* from American Psycho," he joked on the show, adding, "You know at the end of the movie [that] he didn't really kill anyone. [I just liked] the clean aesthetic and the way he was all about labels. I wanted to express all of that in the video." The rapper, who sings on the single, explained that he was ready to try a different direction on the upcoming album 808's and Heartbreak, which was recently slated for a November 25 release. "I had all these ideas and I just needed to get it out as an artistic vision," he said. "I don't have a rapper's name, [but] I have really good taste and anyone who likes it probably has really good taste too." In addition to opening up about his late mother, *Donda West*, the rapper also talked a bit about his unlikely turn as an author and the philosophy behind his book, Thank You and You're Welcome. "I wanted to come up with a theory that applies to my life in 2008, not someone else's thousands of years ago. I wanted to make a book for non-readers, like myself," he said. "I only read when necessary, so me and my friend designed this book." The "Love Lockdown" video, w ...

Kanye and Ellen DeGeneres are like really tight? Sure why not. Instead of MTV or BET or even his own blog, the "Love Lockdown" premiere went to Ellen TV earlier this week, where she let us know he was her "good friend" and that the video was "brilliant." Later we found out the video was also inspired by American Psycho (the monochromatic apartment part, not the glow-in-the-dark dancing tribespeople part.) So then a day later Ellen, staggering the Kanye content for optimum ratings benefit (that's how friendships work, you stagger content and calculate ratings benefits all the time), showed this clip of Kanye in her studio a doing a live take on his dejected-and-autotuned jam. West brings a crisp suit and the Daft Punk drumline and some pathos, Ellen repays him with a big Ellen hug. ...

One thing that was left out of the clip of Kanye West premiering his video for "Love Lockdown" on yesterday's Ellen DeGeneres Show : The revelation that the clip was inspired by the movie— not the book — American Psycho , which tells the story of a sharply dressed, music-obsessed Wall Street guy who also happens to be a homicidal maniac. But wait, Kanye has something to say about that whole killing bit! "You know at the end of the movie [that] he didn't really kill anyone. [I just liked] the clean aesthetic and the way he was all about labels. I wanted to express all of that in the video." Well, huh. Maybe this means that he's trying to put himself in the running to score the musical version of the movie ? Or he could just be expressing his worries about the economy, I guess. A side-by-side comparison of Mary Harron's and Kanye's competing visions after the jump. The image associated with this post is best viewed using a browser. And here I just thought he was inspired by all those silly condos going up in New York City. Kanye West Says 'Love Lockdown' Video Was Inspired By 'American Psycho' [MTV] [Pic via ONTD ] ...

So my 'What book will they use to teach about the 80s and 90s?' question ended up getting picked up by Marginal Revolution and then made in the LA Times Book Blog - who for some reason, linked to him but not me. (and was discussed here , here and here . The more I think about it American Psycho is the only choice that works. Although the movie sucks and Patrick Bateman has sort of been embraced by exactly the sort of people that Ellis is criticizing, it has the one thing that all the other books have in common: a moral stance on the decades in question. "I am weeping for myself, unable to find solace in any of this, crying out, sobbing "I just want to be loved," cursing the earth and everything I have been taught: principles, distinctions, choices, morals, compromises, knowledge, unity prayer--all of it was wrong, without any final purpose. All it came down to was: die or adapt. I imagine my own vacant face, the disembodied voice coming from its mouth: These are terrible times ." Bret Easton Ellis American Psycho "Ellis is, first and last, a moralist. Under the cover of his laconic voice, every word in his novels springs from grieving outrage at our spiritual condition." - Los Angeles Times Book Review I'm not sure there is a better choice in fiction than Ellis. ...

By Michael Atkinson The British have a thing about underage sociopathy -- we in the U.S. will puzzle and wonder as a culture about the latest school shooter or the very occasional death-metal bogus-ritual killing, but in tabloid-crazy England a news story of a child murdering a child pinches very powerful nerve endings, and the social wound of it is felt universally and lasts for years, if not indefinitely. While the American character, often amnesiac and marinated in ideas of personal freedom and frontier independence, tends to take these things in stride (does anyone even off-handedly remember the name of that Virginia Tech Psycho?), the convention-loving Brits are commonly, in contrast, traumatized for good. (There's a reason England is the most surveillance-saturated nation in the world.) This is the underlying dynamic of John Crowley's adroit and heartfelt "Boy A" (2007), which is inspired at least in part by the 1993... ...
