Over the past thirty years, new forms of American commemoration have emerged, abetted by the Media and an expanding sense of who "we the people" are. This illustrated presentation examines the evolution of memorial design from neoclassical structures such as the Lincoln Memorial, that were intended to establish a singular national identity, to new and democratic monumental forms, including the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, AIDS Quilt, and spontaneous memorials, that emphasize the experiential, participatory nature of grief and commemoration. Judith Dupré writes books that bridge the worlds of art, photography, and architecture in ways that delight and educate. She has written several works of illustrated nonfiction that have been translated into ten languages, including Skyscrapers (1996); Bridges (1997); Churches (2001), a New York Times bestseller; and Monuments (2007). The books' unique bindings and page designs call attention to the book as an object to be held and read, and comment on the way people read today. ... Source: www.buzzflash.net --- 38 days ago

Sarah Palin has an answer to her Media critics who say she isn't fit to be next in line for the presidency: They hate me because I represent the average "Joe Six-Pack" American. Palin called in yesterday for a brief interview on the Hugh Hewitt radio show, and had this eminently quotable exchange: Hewitt: Governor, your candidacy has ignited extreme hostility, even some hatred on the left and in some parts of the Media. Are you surprised? And what do you attribute this reaction to? Palin: Oh, I think they're just not used to someone coming in from the outside saying you know what? It's time that normal Joe six-pack American is finally represented in the position of vice presidency, and I think that that's kind of taken some people off guard, and they're out of sorts, and they're ticked off about it. Late Update : There was also this interesting line about bias by the Media and the left against her religion: Palin: I think that there's a lot of mocking of my personal faith, and my personal faith is very, very simple. I don't belong to any church. I do have a strong belief in God, and I believe that I'm a heck of a lot better off putting my life in God's hands, and saying hey, you know, guide me... And you know, so bet it, though I do have respect for those who have differing views than I do on faith, on religion. I'm no ... Find more results for American Media on RSSMicro.com |
