Monday was the deadline to register to vote for this November’s hotly-contested and highly-anticipated election. San Miguel County’s totals show 4,742 people are registered. Keeping with the county’s liberal track record, the total breaks down to 2,193 Democrats, 812 Republicans, 33 Libertarians and 47 Greens. Despite a heavy push nationally and locally for voter registration, the number is only slightly higher than the 2004 presidential election, which saw 4,706 registered (4,030 voted). At any rate, the 4,742 souls who chose to cast their votes this year have quite an endeavor ahead of them. The 2008 ballot is a voluminous affair several pages long. There are a whopping 16 choices for presidential candidates and their running mates (including such highly famed candidates as Bradford Lyttle, Charles Jay, and yes, Ralph Nader). There are county commissioner candidates, local ballot measures and a citizen’s initiated question that would change the way mayoral races in Telluride operate. There are judge reinstatements to vote on, and there are a slew of state referendums and Amendments. In the interest of time, San Miguel County Clerk and Recorder Peggy Nerlin urges people to vote by mail-in ballot this year. Voters can still apply for a mail-in ballot until Oct. 28.
