Amazon has introduced a tiered pricing scheme for S3, its cloud storage service, that will take advantage of increasing economies of scale and go into effect November 1st. Currently, American customers pay $0.15 for each gigabyte of data they store each month. With the new scheme, this will remain the price only for users who require less than 50 terabytes of storage. Once demands exceed that level, pricing drops to $0.14 and then $0.13 per gigabyte-month, and then settles at $0.12 for customers who need to storage over 500 terabytes of data. ...

Amazon announced today that it will cut prices for its Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) offering on Nov. 1. The company is essentially offering people who use more storage significant volume discounts. For folks using up to 50 terabytes of storage, the price cuts don’t make much of a difference. In the U.S. they pay 15 [...] ...

Amazon Web Services LLC is “tiering” the pricing on its hosted storage system. Amazon Simple Storage Service (or S3) in the U.S. had charged 15 cents per gigabyte of stored data. That rate will hold for the first 50 terabytes but now as you pack more stuff into the storage cloud the per gigabyte rate falls. [...] ...

Amazon will be cutting the price of its S3 hosted storage service come November 1. Pricing will be tiered from now on and favor heavier users. The company’s entry-level price of 15 cents a gigabyte a month in the US will remain in place but only for the first 50TB, the next 50TB will cost 14 cents a GB with the next 400TB after that costing 13 cents a GB. Users of more than 500TB will get a bill for 12 cents a GB. read more ...

Last April Amazon reduced pricing on data transfer on their Amazon S3 online storage service. Yesterday Amazon announced plans to reduce the price for the storage portion of S3. Basic users won't see a change as the base price remains 15 cents per TB. For heavy users, the pricing moves to a tiered model. Over 50 TB of storage is 14 cents/TB and it gradually lowers to 12 cents/TB over 500 TB of storage. I wonder how many Amazon S3 clients are using over 500 TB of data storage. It's like saying if you drive more than 30,000 miles in a month in your car, we will give you 20 cents off each gallon of gas. We were using S3 for all static files on CN but I've found in my travels that the domain didn't resolve correctly so images and CSS files would appear broken. I must have set something wrong in the DNS. CN Sponsor: Check Your Credit Score Other CenterNetworks Coverage: Viddler , Twitter , Web Jobs ...

Larry Dignan ( ZDNet ) submits: Amazon (AMZN) said Thursday that it will cut prices on its Simple Storage Service ((S3)) and offer more volume discounts. The pricing, which goes into effect on Nov. 1, may reflect that Amazon is looking to grab share as competition from Microsoft (MSFT) and others is about to heat up. Meanwhile, the volume discounts and tiered pricing will appeal to enterprises. Amazon’s official line ( blog , statement ) is that it is merely passing on efficiencies to customers, but the timing (IT budget worries for 2009) seems quite opportunistic. Complete Story » ...

Amazon's S3 (Simple Storage Service) started out the year plagued with widely publicized outages and provoked a significant dither in the blogosphere over the future of SaaS and cloud-based services in general, but none of that has stopped it from undertaking impressive growth in the past quarter, and lowering storage rates in the bargain. Starting in November, S3 will adopt a tiered pricing model which will retain the current $0.15/GB rate for under 50TB of storage, but then trend downward through a series of steps to a low-end price of $0.12/GB for anything over 500TB. If the storage rate was a good deal for you before, you've got to love it even more now. Amazon's Web Services blog has details on both the growth and the new pricing structure. See full article . Amazon S3 is a great hosted storage solution, that lets you store an unlimited number of files for pennies on the dollar. We have been using Amazon S3 for a while now as part of SoftwareProjects FileToLink.com service and wrote about the benefits of using S3 a few times in the past. As part of this post, I will demonstrate the easiest way to put Amazon S3 to use in minutes. Step 1: Signup If you haven't yet signed up for an Amazon S3 account, signup here Save your Amazon S3 access key and secret key. Those strings look something like this: PHP Code: Access Key = 0BEZAVZXSW2JMREDVZW2 Secret Key = IR41Aa938YQgjVlUcajs6E4tq5O8sHMwerB4C9Be0 Step 2: Install S3 binary While S3 offers API libraries for all popular programming languages, we found the easiest way to integrate S3 is to use the S3 binary. The binary is a program you can run from shell, pass arguments and have the program take care of everything with no necessary API integration in your code. You can download S3 binary here . Install both files under your /usr/local/bin folder and chmod 755 Step 3: Setup access key as environment variable Amazon S3 binary requires both the access key and secret key to be available as environment variables. Open /root/.cshrc and add the two lines below: PHP Code: setenv S3_ACCESS_KEY_ID 0BR2AVYHPWERMSDFSGG5 setenv S3_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY / etc / amazon_secret_access_key . key Replace the access key ID with yours and create a text file to hold your pr ...
