FRAMINGHAM – From hybrids to Fuel cells, converted natural gas to ethanol, the largest automotive collection of Alternative Fuel fleets for businesses on the East Coast will be on display at the Staples world headquarters in Framingham later this month. The headquarters will host the Fourth annual AltWheels Fleet Day on Sept. 29. Cars ranging from an Eaton Hydraulic Launch Assist Class 7 Truck to a Ford F-450 Biodiesel will be shown. Experts in cutting energy costs will attend to discuss some of the more innovative energy conservation techniques. Scheduled panel discussions include idling technologies, federal and state mandates and incentives, and solutions for municipal or commercial fleets. “Obviously transportation costs are going up,” said Jeremy Marin, spokesman for AltWheels, the event’s organizer. “These are some of the best practices going on around the country.” Shipping giant UPS, for example has saved tens of thousands of dollars through mapping out routes using only right hand turns to reduce idling times, Marin said. Alternative Fuel vehicles come in many forms. For example, there's the diesel engine that can use biodiesel without modification, or be tweaked to run on straight vegetable oil (SVO), or waste vegetable oil (WVO). Reusing materials before discarding them is the most efficient and eco-friendly option. With WVO the oil was formly used, for example in a fast food restaurant, to fry food. Hence the joke that biodiesel cars smell like french fries. WVO is easier for the general public to use at home, thus making the conversion to this cleaner Fuel a no-brainer. Additionally, petroleum diesel remains an option if biodiesel is not readily available. One other point to keep in mind is that biofuels often do more harm than good. This is because to grow a biofuel crop, it requires changing land use from something like a forest, for example. Changing land use from a forest or grassland to agricultural land decreases the amount of carbon dioxide that's being absorbed, and land use change is actually the #1 largest contributor to human greenhouse gas emssions . Using a 50-50 mixture of JP-8 jet Fuel and a natural gas-based synthetic Fuel, an F-15 Strike Eagle flew high above Robins Air Force Base in Georgia this week. One of the pilots for the test, Maj. Dan Badia, is quoted as saying it was just another day at the office. He said, “You could have had JP-8 in there and I wouldn’t have known the difference.” The test flight involved engineers from the 830th Aircraft Sustainment Group, who maintain the 561st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, and pilots from the 339th Flight Test Certification office. The aircraft, according to F-15 fuels engineer Ryan Mead, functioned within the same range as it would if it had used JP-8. Because of the test flights, Mead expects the jet to be certified on the Fuel. The test was part of a direction from the Secretary of the Air Force, to certify the entire Air Force fleet on synthetic Fuel by 2011.
