Greentech Media submits: It won’t blow up and it charges rapidly. Conceivably, you could have a an electric car that charges in a few minutes. Those are the some of the reasons that Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) says the Scib battery will become popular in electric vehicles in the coming years. Scib (which stands for super-charge ion battery) is a lithium-titanate battery – similar to the ones being put together by tiny Altair Nanotechnologies – that can be used in a wide variety of applications. Conventional lithium-ion batteries have a lithium-cobalt cathode. (In batteries, charged lithium particles move from the cathode to the anode and back again). Unfortunately, lithium-cobalt batteries can break down and cause a “thermal runaway reaction” or explosion. Lithium-cobalt batteries also degrade over time: The more they get used, the less power they can hold. If you want to buy an electric car today, battery replacement is an issue you have to consider. Filed under: Emerging Technologies , EV/Plug-in Altair Nanotechnologies announced this week that the new lithium titanate battery it is developing for the U.S. Navy has completed its 500th full depth cycle and, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, lost just one percent of its total capacity. The Navy (thanks to U.S. taxpayers) is paying Altair $2.5 million for these batteries. While not destined for any vehicles, the Navy's goal with the battery program is to reduce dependency on expensive jet fuel used in back-up turbines and, through that, to reduce carbon emissions. Altair also has a history with Phoenix Motor Cars and their all-electric SUV and SUT . More details on the Altair and the Navy's lithium titanate battery are available here . Altair is also developing batteries for the Army's " M119 105mm lightweight gun digitization program ." [Source: Altair Nanotechnologies Inc. ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments ...

YouTube - The Greatest Prank Call Ever This is one of the funniest prank calls I have ever heard and the fact that the guy is pranking a Telemarketer makes it even better! Oil seed rape grown for biofuel can help clean up toxic soils Using plants to help clean up heavily polluted soils has been successfully tested for many years and shown to be a cheap and environmentally friendly way to clear heavy metals such as arsenic, copper, zinc and chromium from contaminated land. The main problem with the method has been the amount of time it takes to grow successive crops of plants to clean up an area. Now scientists may have come up with a solution by combining heavy metal tolerant bacteria with plants used to make biofuels such as oil seed rape. Space-Based Solar Power Breakthrough to Be Announced Space solar power could be a clean, renewable solution to America's long-term energy needs. John C. Mankins, former manager of NASA's Exploration Systems Research and Technology Program, and one of the foremost experts on space solar power, will announce on Friday a milestone demonstration of the critical technology enabling SSP: long-distance, solar-powered wireless power transmission.
