RIAA drops lawsuit against AllofMP3

http://groove-bay.com claims to have a simply enormous catalog - over 200,000 albums online. This seemingly extensive catalog contains not just the latest and greatest, but also older tracks too - which lots of people (like me) are shopping for. I have had a tendency to lose CD s over the years, so this is a good way for me to reclaim (cheaply) the music I ve already bought in the past. --> Tagged by steven16989 under Download , Mp3 , music , song , ...

The RIAA has declared complete victory over the infamous Russian music download store AllofMP3 which was accused of selling tracks but not giving any of the proceeds to the artists or record labels. At its peak, the site had 6 million users who legally downloaded songs and full albums for cheaper than 1/3 the price of iTunes or Amazon . The RIAA said however that the record labels and the artists were not seeing any of this money and filed complaints to get the WTO to shut the site down. In 2007, the site was shut down and the RIAA praised the decision. However, in October of that year, the site was acquitted of any charges and a district court in Moscow confirmed the innocent verdict after an appeal by the record industry group. Despite being innocent, the site shut down and no longer offers music. It now appears that this week the RIAA dropped its copyright infringement lawsuit against AllofMP3 and claimed victory. “The site is now defunct and out of business, the result of a successful anti-piracy initiative,” Jonathan Lamy, an RIAA spokesman said. That may be true, but following the media AllofMP3 received, almost a dozen similar sites have sprung up and are currently fully operational. Even funnier, the founders of AllofMP3 have started a new site called Mp3Sparks which operates exactly the same as the now "defunct" AllofMP3 did. Talking about the dropping of the lawsuit, John Crossman, representative of the site’s owner, Me ...

Vuoden 2006 joulukuussa yhdysvaltalaisten levy-yhtiöiden etuja puolustava RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) aiheutti suurta kohua haastamalla Venäjällä toimineen Mediaservices -yrityksen oikeuteen AllofMP3.com -musiikkikaupan pyörittämisestä.

And it's finally over. After AllofMP3.Com officially shut down last year (and even though the owner was acquitted of any wrongdoing in a Russian trial), the RIAA has finally dropped the suit officially, saying that they were in effect victorious. Unfortunately, as AppScout notes, "that still leaves a host of Russian music sites that say they're willing to pay royalties to the artists under Russian law, but whose fees place them substantially under the rates charged by American and European vendors of downloadable music. "Case in point? AllTunes.com, which sells tracks for just 15 cents apiece, or MP3Sparks, which suspiciously emerged just as AllofMP3.com was shutting down. The latter site advertises Madonna's latest, Hard Candy, for 18 cents per track or $2.34 for the album (in 192-Kbit/s quality, unprotected.)" In other words, prepare for the onslaught of clone sites, Kazaa-style. New Career Opportunities Daily: The best jobs in media ...

Filed under: Audio , Internet , News A few years ago you could purchase practically any song you wanted from the Russian music site AllofMP3 . And the songs were dirt cheap. While you had to pay Apple roughly a buck for every song you purchased legally in the US, AllofMP3 charged just a few cents per song. If that all sounds too good to be true, the RIAA thought so too. The US recording industry trade group took legal action against AllofMP3 in late 2006, and Russian authorities shut down the service in 2007. Last week the RIAA dropped its complaint against AllofMP3. An RIAA spokesperson told Bloomberg that there wasn't much reason to continue with the suit, since the site had been shut down. But as TorrentFreak points out , the same people who created AllofMP3 now have another site that's nearly identical. The only difference we can find is that it has a new name - Mp3Sparks . Like its predecesser, the site sells music at ridiculously low prices, and doesn't appear to pass any of the proceeds along to artists in the US. So we're pretty sure that the RIAA will be filing another suit soon. Or claiming victory and pretending the new site doesn't exist. Definitely one or the other. Possibly both.
