After last week's state primaries, a few things are obvious. In the 1st U.S. House District, an incumbent can be beaten. In the 9th U.S. House District, KKK ads and anti-Semitic innuendo don't work. And, in the U.S. Senate race, Republican Lamar Alexander is a cinch to win the general election. ... Source: www.fwicki.com --- 4 days ago

He has 2,016 bottles of natural spring water shipped all the way from Chatsworth, Ga., and now getting into the hands of residents as they leave and enter the Metro or make their way into Safeway. That sounds familiar. "Building Bridges, Finding Solutions" is Council member Harry Thomas Jr.'s signature slogan still used as a sign off on his voice mail messages. Johnson said, "So." A Taylorsville attorney charged last month with sexual battery on a police officer posing as a client was charged Wednesday with eight additional counts of sexual battery involving female clients. Vaughn Edward Jennings, 60, turned himself in at the Alexander County Sheriff's Office, Taylorsville police Sgt. Lisa Johnson said Wednesday. A magistrate released him on $10,000 unsecured bond. Taylorsville police and the SBI started investigating Jennings after a woman filed a complaint in July, saying Jennings had sexually assaulted her in his office when she visited him for representation in a speeding ticket case. A female undercover police officer visited Jennings' Taylorsville office posing as a client, and she said Jennings assaulted her. SBI agents arrested him Aug. 12 and charged him with one count of misdemeanor sexual battery. Since then, other women have reported similar assaults by Jennings, Johnson said. Based on those reports, investigators obtained a search warrant last week to search Jennings' office. The search warrant gives details of the women's complaints. According to the document, several women said Jennings grabbed their breasts. The warrant also says that in a phone conversation recorded by investigators, Jennings told a woman he'd represent her if she had sex with him. He also asked the woman to bring marijuana to his house. Johnson said some of the charges involve incidents in Jennings' office, others in a room ... Source: www.charlotteobserver.com --- 3 days ago

In April 1992 a young man from a well-to-do family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. His name was Christopher Johnson McCandless. He had given $25,000 in savings to charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, burned all the cash in his wallet, and invented a new life for himself. Four months later, his decomposed body was found by a moose hunter. How McCandless came to die is the unforgettable story of Into the Wild . Immediately after graduating from college in 1991, McCandless had roamed through the West and Southwest on a vision quest like those made by his heroes Jack London and John Muir. In the Mojave Desert he abandoned his car, stripped it of its license plates, and burned all of his cash. He would give himself a new name, Alexander Supertramp, and , unencumbered by money and belongings, he would be free to wallow in the raw, unfiltered experiences that nature presented. Craving a blank spot on the map, McCandless simply threw the maps away. Leaving behind his desperate parents and sister, he vanished into the wild. Jon Krakauer constructs a clarifying prism through which he reassembles the disquieting facts of McCandless's short life. Admitting an interst that borders on obsession, he searches for the clues to the dries and desires that propelled McCandless. Digging deeply, he takes an inherently compelling mystery and unravels the larger riddles it holds: the profoun ...

The Minnesota Vikings released quarterback Brooks Bollinger and placed safety Michael Boulware on season-ending injured reserve Saturday, as the team reduced its roster to the 53-player maximum. Bollinger, who appeared in seven games as a member of the Vikings in 2006-07, was battling rookie John David Booty for the third QB job behind Tarvaris Jackson and Gus Frerotte. The Wisconsin product did not enjoy an impressive 2008 preseason, however, completing just 14-of-35 passes for 133 yards without a touchdown or interception to seal his fate. Boulware, an offseason free agent pickup who appeared in all 16 games with the Houston Texans last season, suffered a wrist injury and will miss the year. The injury will force Boulware to miss a game for the first time in his five- year NFL career. Also released by the Vikings on Saturday were linebacker Rufus Alexander, defensive end Martail Burnett, guard Brian Daniels, defensive tackle Leger Douzable, kicker Steve Hauschka, tackle Chase Johnson, wide receiver Jaymar Johnson, tight end Braden Jones, wide receiver Nate Jones, linebacker J Leman, center Tim Mattran, cornerback Dee McCann, center Dan Mozes, wide receiver Martin Nance, defensive end Chris Norwell, wide receiver Darius Reynaud, cornerback Brandon Sumrall, cornerback Marcus Walker, running back Albert Young. Notables among that group include Alexander, the team's sixth-round Draft choice out of Oklahoma in 2007, and Jaymar Johns ... Source: www.myrtlebeachonline.com --- 23 days ago
