Hey, award fans — ever wonder what happens to the Hollywood titans after they win lots of those golden statuettes? Well, according to the "30 Rock" episode that Alec Baldwin submitted to Emmy judges in the lead comedy actor race, they lose their marbles, jobs and their fortunes, live in rat-infested squalor in a ghetto war zone, drink cheap wine all day after smoking a joint first thing in the morning — and invite Tina Fey over for a friendly visit! That's part of the hilarious subplot of "Rosemary's Baby" in which TV writer Liz (Tina Fey) gets excited upon meeting an award-winning film and TV scribe she's worshipped for years. That's Rosemary, who's portrayed with a cynical wink by Carrie Fisher, the onetime film star (Princess Leia in "Star Wars"), daughter of Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds and a noted scriptwriter herself. Fisher wrote the showbiz spoof "Postcards from the Edge," which was nominated for lots of Oscars and Golden Globes, but came up with scratch back in 1990. Liz is so awed by Rosemary that she lands her a job writing for her own TV show and Rosemary returns the favor by inviting Liz over to her apartment to hang out. NEW YORK — Alec Baldwin is lending his voice to critics of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's homelessness policies. The "30 Rock" actor narrates a public service announcement released by the Coalition for the Homeless, a charity blasting Bloomberg's follow-through on a 2004 pledge to slash the number of homeless New Yorkers. Over footage of people on city streets, Baldwin recites statistics such as "over 40,000 New Yorkers will go to sleep homeless tonight." A coalition spokeswoman says the spot will be televised on various networks. The city Department of Homeless Services says the number of homeless people on Manhattan streets and in shelters is shrinking, which the coalition disputes. Barack Obama versus John McCain. One of the first things that supporters of Obama ought to realize is that attacking, belittling or characterizing John McCain by emphasizing his age is a mistake. It is a mistake that may backfire and cost them a lot of votes with seniors in this country. I don't know about you, but everywhere I look in our society, people over sixty-five are making profound contributions to their chosen fields. Architecture, writing, journalism, painting, education, corporate leadership, law, medicine. You name it. With the exception of actually performing in fields such as sports or ballet, for example, men and women that are John McCain's age are not only contributing, they are at the top of their game. The problem with John McCain is not his age, it's his condition. McCain's true lack of the abundant energy required to function as president, even performing the job on the most basic level, is what must be questioned. Perhaps McCain could have served in the 1950s, back in a time when the job was significantly less complicated than it is today. However, the world has grown far more dangerous and complicated in the last decade. (I know this because the Bush administration has worked incredibly hard for eight years to convince me of this.) It is a stage covered with remarkable actors, directed by Arthur Laurents himself, breathing new life into an old story. And, it is Patti.
