Related Articles Gender bias in medical textbooks: examples from coronary heart disease, depression, Alcohol Abuse and pharmacology. Med Educ. 2008 Aug 27; Authors: Dijkstra AF, Verdonk P, Lagro-Janssen AL Objectives This study aimed to review the availability and accessibility of gender-specific knowledge in current medical textbooks used in Dutch medical schools. Medicine has been criticised as being gender-biased by assuming male and female bodies to be generally the same. The authors wondered whether current nationally and internationally accepted medical textbooks reflect the state of the art on gender-specific knowledge. Methods The authors selected medical textbooks recommended by at least two medical schools in the Netherlands in the academic years 2004-05 and 2005-06. Investigated disciplines were internal medicine/cardiology, psychiatry and pharmacology. The textbooks were screened on the following topics: coronary heart disease; depressive disorders; Alcohol Abuse, and pharmacology. We defined evidence-based, gender-specific aspects of each of the topics on which information should be accessible in current textbooks for medical students. Results Eleven textbooks were screened, including four on internal medicine/cardiology, four on pharmacology and three on psychiatry. Results show that gender-specific information is scarce or absent, and hardly accessible via index or layout. The scarce gender-specific information mainly ap ... For years, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst has labored under the stereotype of a party school with a deeply entrenched drinking culture. Deserved or not, the "Zoo Mass" reputation fueled a self-perpetuating problem, administrators say: Some students drank heavily because they believed everyone else was. But in an aggressive campaign that is winning national attention, the university is taking aim at Alcohol Abuse by chipping away at the stereotype. Two years after launching the so-called social norms campaign, health officials say they are seeing striking results. Bottom line, Jeff VanVonderen and Candy Finnigan would not be pleased. San Francisco, it seems, placed third in Forbes ' America's Hard-Drinking Cities list. Or so says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's 2007 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey. Yay. Here's the breakdown: 1. Austin, TX 2. Milwaukee, WI 3. San Francisco, CA 4. Providence, RI 5. Chicago, IL 8. (tie) Seattle, WA, Cleveland, OH, St. Louis, MO 9. Boston, MA 10. Cincinnati, OH 11. Pittsburgh, PA 12. Virginia Beach, VA 13. Portland, OR 14. Jacksonville, FL 15. Detroit, MI (Eat it, Providence.) But as The Consumerist points out, "a better 'hard drinkin'' rank doesn't mean your city is a 'den of debauchery.'" (Well, SF is said den, but...still.) Anyway, the survey came down to three questions: [W]hether they had at least one drink of Alcohol within the past 30 days; whether men had more than two drinks per day or women one drink per day; and whether they had five or more drinks on one occasion. Women, so dainty! We'll drink to that. (Via The Consumerist ) ... Source: www.tricities.com --- 7 days ago
