Albert Hofmann, the father of LSD, passed away at 9AM CEST on Tuesday April 29, 2008 at his home in Basel, Switzerland. Cause of death was a heart attack; two caretakers were there with him at the time. MAPS President Rick Doblin said, "[Albert and I] spoke on the phone the day after the Basel conference and he was happy and fulfilled. He'd seen the renewal of LSD psychotherapy research with his own eyes, as had [his wife] Anita. I said that I looked forward to discussing the results of the study with him in about a year and a half and he laughed and said he'd try to help the research however he could, either from this side or "the other side". ...

In 1953, a decade after the Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann produced his 25th synthesis of lysergic acid diethylamide—better known as LSD-25—British psychiatrist Humphry Osmond was studying its effect on alcoholics in Canada when he coined the word that would name a category of drugs as well as an artistic, musical and social movement in the 1960s. Humphry seized upon the Greek roots “psyche” (for “soul” or “mind”) and “delein” or “deloun” (“to make manifest” or “to show or reveal”) to form “psychedelic,” and he illustrated its use in a rhyming couplet: “To fathom hell or soar angelic/Just take a pinch of psychedelic.” Since then, few bands have embodied the mind-revealing or soul-manifesting goals of great psychedelic rock as effectively as Spiritualized. ... Today Bernie Mac joined Heath Ledger, Tim Russert, and many others in 2008's series of notable and often surprising deaths. Mac died today from complications due to pneumonia. The invention and serendipitous discovery of the psychoactive properties of Lysergic acid diethylamine (LSD) are, of course, well known. However, the curious history and biology of its parent compound are perhaps less well known. For those that are not familiar with the story, LSD is a semisynthetic compound produced from a metabolite found in the fungal parasite ergot. When Albert Hofmann was screening ergot derivatives for oxytocic activity, he happened to become intoxicated by LSD. How this happened, either by ingestion or absorption, is not clear. However, the compounds effects were severe enough to force him to stop working.
