Photo: Courtesy of Showtime This season, Weeds has done away with the opening song, and along with it, the little ticky-tacky boxes on a hillside. We wish they would bring back the endless domestic scenes — Nancy in the tub, spraying a dying plant; Heylia and Conrad in the kitchen, baking cookies and ruminating on the blah blah blah of life, that theme we so enjoyed last episode. This one played out like a confused adventure satire: Rush Hour 3 meets Bonnie and Clyde — especially the latter, it being more cruel than funny. Celia, having been threatened with the orange uniform for not ably enough pursuing Guillermo Garcia Gomez on behalf of the Feds, gets dragged by the hair into Guillermo’s warehouse for spying. (The last time a connection of Nancy’s posed a threat, he washed up on shore.) With Bubby dead and gone (and shivah properly, if wanly, observed), Grandpa decides to sell the house and throw the Botwins to the lions in the process — until he discovers the softness of the real-estate market, Nancy's stash of cash, and a con to keep him living well in Paris. (Farewell, Albert Brooks! How will this season limp on without you?) Meanwhile, Nancy and Uncle Andy wait in the desert for burly Mexican police with big guns and duffel bags of marijuana. Nancy delivers these to Guillermo, along with a question: Where’s the SUV? She couldn't fit both the weed and a passenger in her Prius, and so a deeply stoned Andy was left in the nigh ...

Albert Brooks: looking for pot in the suburban world. Showtime has confirmed that Albert Brooks will guest-star on at least four episodes of Weeds next season, playing Nancy’s father-in-law.  Weeds has apparently decided that the key to ratings success is to lure actors who have long since left our television screens back onto the show, as evidenced by Mary-Kate Olsen’s turn last season and the casting of Kevin Nealon.  Aside from his more prolific work as a film actor/director/writer, Brooks has been on TV in the form of Simpsons voices and some guest appearances back in the 70s. The fourth season of Weeds is set to begin airing on June 16th. ...

Photo courtesy of Showtime Weeds has recently proceeded with such scattershot abandon — Celia in custody, then not; Nancy training to smuggle, then being deployed in a front; Albert Brooks nailing the absurd pathos his castmates all aspire to, then disappearing — that we hardly believe the unfolding allegory that dominated this episode was even planned by the writers. But it couldn’t possibly be an accident that Nancy’s maternity store obscures a tunnel that birthed so much trouble this last half-hour, could it? And that Celia decides to fold her yappy daughter back into her cold embrace? And that Nancy herself is watching her own children slip slowly away — particularly Silas, now wooed by none other than the neighborhood MILF ? Sweet Mary: Maybe we should start calling it Moms . Entitled Nancy, speaker of Spanglish, leveler of crushing, shrugging gazes: If Mary Louise-Parker wins this Emmy, it will be for perfecting the White Lady Who Gets Away With Everything. What’s driving Ms. Daisy, and where will it all lead? Spankings, apparently: She stupidly (of course) follows the tunnel, pushes through a door, and catches the eye of some Mexican suits, one of whom — the mayor of Tijuana — later has her stuffed in a trunk and brought to him, tousle-haired, so he can offer her the punishment we know, as a Bad Mother, she so hotly desires. But they’re interrupted. So we have to wait until next week for that. Doug and Andy, meanwhile, ind ...

It's not often that the pop culture tour de force that is the BWE editorial foursome is completely baffled, but for serious, people, can someone please explain what the f*ck that is on Jeff Goldblum's shirt? Alex guessed " Seth Rogen with acne," Michelle said "The guy from Soul Man ," and Sara proposed " Albert Brooks circa Defending Your Life ?" I personally think it's either an editorial caricature of the villain from Under Siege 2 or some sort of Jewish Fear and Loathing poster . UPDATE : Problem solved -- thanks, commenter Billy (and others). Obviously, I should've known this (seen Tim & Eric Live, for crissakes), but still, very jarring sight to not only see a celeb in a Tim & Eric shirt, but also for that shirt to make its way to Gettyimages, the home base of celebrity stock photos for just about every gossip publication. Feel free to keep the insults coming in the comments. ( Getty Images ) ...

Filed under: Estates Some names add cachet to a house years after they have moved on. Elvis Presley definitely falls into that category. Now his Palm Springs home , basically his "Graceland West" is up for sale in a pocket listing (meaning I can't direct you to a listing page). The home is located in the foothills of the San Jacinto Mountains in Palm Springs. Elvis lived in the home for almost eight years (he purchased it in 1970) and spent his last birthday there. The approximately 5,000 square foot home has four bedrooms. Architect Albert Frey designed the Spanish-style stucco home which includes Presley's bedroom suite with two complete bathrooms, a sunken black and red tile tub, and dressing area. The living room has a cathedral beamed ceiling and overlooks the pool. The home is being sold with Presley's original kitchen appliances, a separate indoor sauna and steam room, plus his private covered Jacuzzi. Just last year Reno Fontana and his wife, Laura bought the home and announced plans to restore it and offer it as a West Coast destination for Elvis fans. They also created a website dedicated to the home which does show a few interior pictures of the vintage decor and Elvis movie posters and gold records on the walls. The property is approximately two acres and is listed at $17 million. For more information about the property, or to request a showing, contact Honey Brooks at 415.435.2585 or honeybrooksrealtor (at) comcast.net. R ...

The only thing surprising about the capture today of Samuel Israel, the hedge fund scam artist who had been on the lam since June 9, is how long it took. Today, Israel surrendered to police in Southwick, Massachusetts, near Springfield. That’s just 105 miles from Stamford, Connecticut, the home of his Ponzi fund hedge fund, Bayou Group. From the beginning his escape was not very convincing. On the day he was due to report to federal prison to begin serving a 20-year sentence, his S.U.V. was found abandoned on the Bear Mountain Bridge by he Hudson River.  The words “suicide is painless” were written in dust on the vehicle’s hood. (The song “Suicide Is Painless,” was of course the them of the M.A.S.H . film and TV series; but the “suicide” in the film lived.)   Nearly every body of a jumper from Bear Mountain Bridge has found. His was not. Ten days later, his girlfriend was arrested. She told investigators that Israel had fled in a recreational vehicle (did he take Albert Brooks’ Lost in America literally?) with a motor scooter inside. The U.S. Marshalls Service noted that Israel, who turns 49 this month, suffers from back pain, a heart condition, and is addicted to pain killer medication. Not a good candidate to get very far. Earlier this year, Israel pleaded guilty to defrauding investors of his fund, Bayou Group. Since its founding in 1996, the fund covered up trading losses by falsifying auditing records from a fake accounting fi ...

Let's just come to a friendly arrangement: You agree to come to the Las Vegas get-together for Stuck in the 80s, and I'll agree to stop this daily countdown feature right now. You're gonna be stubborn, I see. OK. And so we march on. Though the '80s don't give us nearly enough opportunities to discuss the genius work of Albert Brooks (I'm in love with 1991's "Defending Your Life"), there's at least one movie of his with a Vegas theme -- "Lost in America" from 1985. And wouldn't you know it, Brooks also turns 61 years old today. You know he wants to be doing the "Jungle Love" slide with Jerome, Jellybean and us in V-town. (Only he's rich, so he'd score the Pharaoh's Suite at the Luxor.) Drum-roll please... TODAY'S MAGIC NUMBER .... NINE days 'til the Vegas trip and ... TOP 9 LINES FROM "LOST IN AMERICA": 9.
