Al Kooper's classic memoir is updated and reissued. Originally published in that most holy of musical years, 1977, updated and republished in the late 1990s, and now again revised in 2008 with an additional chapter, Al Kooper’s Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards: Memoirs of a Rock ‘N’ Roll Survivor remains one of the most honest, hilarious, and in many ways poignant entries... ...

Booker T. and the MGs, the Memphis Horns and the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section will become the newest members of the Musicians Hall of Fame. Musician and producer Al Kooper, producer Billy Sherrill and Buddy Holly's band the Crickets also will be inducted this year. Rock guitarist Peter Frampton and country music great George Jones announced the selections Tuesday. Booker T. and the MGs helped create the famed Memphis sound in the '60s, playing on recordings by Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, and Rufus Thomas. The Memphis Horns also were an integral part of Memphis music in the '60s and '70s, appearing on nearly every recording on Stax Records. The Alabama-based Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section worked on classics like Aretha Franklin's "Respect" and the Staple Singers "I'll Take You There." Kooper recorded with the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix and also produced the first three Lynyrd Skynyrd albums. Sherrill produced records by Johnny Cash, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, Elvis Costello and many others. And the Crickets influenced everyone from the Beatles to Bruce Springsteen with songs like "Not Fade Away" and "That'll Be the Day." A formal induction ceremony will be held in October. ...

I'm ready with my final list of Bob Dylan's top five songs. How can I resist? I've tried to rank them in some kind of order, but it's hard to do. Mind you, I'm not saying these are his best or most important songs. I think most of us would agree that "Like a Rolling Stone," from "Highway 61 Revisited" (1965), is both, but it's been so overplayed that I usually change the station. (But I'll listen to the "Royal Albert Hall" version from 1966 anytime, with Zimmy's barely audible "Play fucking loud!" admonition at the beginning.) Rather, these are the Dylan songs I most like to listen to right now. That could change. With that caveat, here we go. 1. "Tombstone Blues." (From "Highway 61.") Dylan at the absolute top of his form. From start to finish, "Highway 61" features the best singing of his career. You may not like his voice, but he's got a sense of timing that Miles Davis and Charlie Parker — not to mention Snoop Dogg — could appreciate. On "Tombstone Blues," Mike Bloomfield's howling guitar and Al Kooper's zonked-out organ compete for attention. Similar to "Rolling Stone," but more unhinged. "The sun's not yellow, it's chicken" anticipates Robert Duvall in "Apocalypse Now" by 14 years. 2. "Not Dark Yet." (From "Time Out of Mind," 1997.) Not a merely a sentimental pick. I've found Dylan's latter-years revival to be as enjoyable as any period of his career. Someone — I think it was in the New Yorker — once described "Not Dark Yet" ...

Perth, Australia, the hometown of the late actor Heath Ledger, named a theatre in his honour yesterday: the $87 million, 575-seat Heath Ledger Theatre. Ledger died in January at 28 of an accidental prescription drug overdose. Boy George has officially cancelled his summer tour after U.S. authorities denied him a visa to enter the country. The Culture Club singer, 47, had planned to kick off his 25-city tour in Aspen, Colo., next Thursday. He plans to reschedule the tour for next winter. Booker T. and the MGs, the Memphis Horns and the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, producers Al Kooper and Billy Sherrill, and Buddy Holly's band the Crickets will become the newest members of the Musicians Hall of Fame this year. Jazz vocalist Ernestine Anderson's home has been saved from foreclosure thanks in part to music legend Quincy Jones and jazz artist Diane Schuur, who contributed to $43,000 in donations on news of the Seattle jazz legend's financial woes. Electric Ladyland (released in October 1968) is widely considered The Jimi Hendrix Experience's crowning achievement and focuses attention on Hendrix's abilities as singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer. This stunning collection provides the earliest insight into Hendrix's "Sky Church" concept with featured guest appearances by Steve Winwood, Jack Casady, Al Kooper, Chris Wood, and Buddy Miles. The first time I picked up this album, I knew it was something very special. ...
