Calyon Securities Airline analyst Ray Neidl says he thinks the Industry is "bottoming out." Now, some industries hit bottom and begin digging. But Mr. Neidl cites three reasons why he thinks things won't get worse: "oil prices coming down, aggressive action by airlines to cut capacity and costs while supporting ticket prices, and the ability to raise additional cash through the equity markets." Says Mr. Neidl in a research report out Monday: If the worst is over, at the current low stock prices even after the recent rally, we could see a strengthening of Airline stock prices between now and next spring. With capacity constraints and continuing yield improvement, the Industry could return to profitability by next summer. However, we are maintaining our Neutral ratings on the US carriers as we believe they will continue to trade with oil prices. For most carriers, the road to profitability will be from generating more revenue, not from cutting costs, Mr. Neidl says. "Fuel costs are an unknown factor, labor costs will probably hold steady, and other costs have already been significantly reduced; limited further progress is expected," he writes. Industry analysts have been expressing cautious optimism for the Industry as fuel prices have come back down from their record highs. The New York Harbor spot price for jet fuel last week fell to around $3.25 a gallon, down from $4.33 a gallon in early July. And as the Air Transport Association ...
