A BRITISH airport has advertised for an Air traffic controller - and offered those interested an application pack in braille. The website for St Mary's Airport on the Isles of Scilly, off the southwest tip of England, says Controllers need to be able to keep a close eye on the changeable weather as their work "is not over-dependent upon very costly and sophisticated electronic equipment". But applicants for the job could still... ...

Filed under: Europe , United Kingdom , Airports , News I'm all for equal opportunities, but St. Mary's Airport (Isle of Scilly) offering a job application form for an Air traffic controller in braille is, for lack of a better word, retarded. It's a huge waste of time and money creating forms in braille for jobs the blind just cannot have, and questions the intelligence of those people making the rules and enforcing the "small print" on employment procedures. According to this article , the airport defended itself by saying that they were "simply abiding by equal opportunity guidelines but the requirements for the job would be 20/20 vision, from this it can be concluded that a person who was blind or partially sighted would not have a chance of obtaining the job." Errr...so the point of a braille form exactly? To avoid being penalized by the law? In fact, because they offered a "false" opportunity to a blind person who clearly cannot get the job, they should be penalized for being misinforming and misleading, no?   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

“Altitude is going up and down, are you alright sir?” There was a chilling silence after the Air traffic controller’s question. No response came from 65-year-old pilot Joe Baker. Moments later, his single-engine plane would plummet into a supermarket parking lot in Easton, killing all three people aboard. Baker was a volunteer. He was flying the Beechcraft Bonanza plane on behalf of Angel Flight Northeast, a nonprofit that helps people who must travel for medical treatment, such as the 43-year-old cancer patient who was on the plane. The plane was coming from Long Island, N.Y., and was close to landing at Logan International Airport Tuesday morning when its altitude suddenly began to drop, according to an Air traffic control recording obtained by The Enterprise. The pilot never told Air traffic Controllers the reason. When the craft plunged from 3,000 feet to 1,200 feet at one point, a controller urged the pilot, “Climb immediately ... climb immediately.” Baker answered that he was trying. Thirty seconds later, the pilot again made brief radio contact. But Air traffic Controllers would hear nothing more after that. “Are you alright sir?” the controller asked, before saying, “Low altitude alert, your altitude indicates 1,400 (feet), climb immediately.” Then, 30 seconds later: “Radar contact lost.” The plane plunged to the ground at 10:13 a.m., crashing about 500 feet from the Hannaford’s Supermarket. No one was hurt on the ground a ...
