Filed under: Misc. Gadgets , Transportation The only thing worse than getting a punctured tire is trying to use a flimsy scissor jack to change it. Break down on a dirt or snow-covered road and you probably have as good a shot at losing your hand as you do fixing a flat. Not so with the Titan, which may look like an exhaust-powered whoopee cushion, but can actually haul cars (even lifted rigs) up into the Air on nearly any surface. Just run a hose to the exhaust of a running Car, and the $120 (and up) balloon will gently raise the vehicle aloft -- and by "gently" we mean "really, really slowly." It's probably a little faster than calling AAA, but not as easy as Superjack's remote-controlled kit for lazies. If you have the patience, check out the vid after the break for six minutes of tire-changing action. The challenge set by Ford Global Technologies is to design a Model-T for the 21st Century - an inexpensive, innovative and sustainable Car. Deakin University is the only Australian university and one of only five worldwide invited to participate in the Challenge, part of the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the fabled Model T; the Car that changed the 20th Century. [break] Deakin University's 'under wraps' design for the Ford Global Challenge left for Detroit on 29th August carried by Deakin's Tim de Souza (Chief Design Engineer) and Stuart Hanafin (Portfolio Coordinator). Deakin's project is code-named T2 ('TSquared'). Forget petrol, forget electric... how about Air? : Hanafin and de Souza believe their model, which has an engine powered by the release of compressed Air, fits the bill. "Fitting the compressed Air technologies into cars of today which are quite heavy and large is infeasible," de Souza told 2GB's Jason Morrison. "Whereas the concept we've come up with is a really small, lightweight vehicle that can make use of this type of technology." Although the idea of a compressed Air engine suggests it wouldn't last long without needing a 're-fill', de Souza insists his model would have real staying power. "One of the conditions [of the competition] is that it had to have a 200 kilometre range. So we've engineered it to make sure we have that range," he said. "It's a slightly tweaked system where we re-heat the Air... whi ...

I noticed some trends in the way my 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid switches between using recycled and fresh Air conditioning feeds when set on "auto." It uses recycled Air when it is trying to obtain a temperature much cooler than the present state, but uses fresh Air when the temperatures are closer. My question is, why would it ever use fresh Air (unless it can somehow sense surges of methane concentration inside the Car)? Using recycled Air always seems to result in more effective cooling (assuming the Air inside the Car is cooler), no matter the temperature difference. I was only able to come up with one coherent explanation (other than a programming glitch). Perhaps switching to fresh Air allows the Car to turn off an Air circulation fan. The in-rushing Air may need to be cooled more, but it's possible this expends less energy than cooling the interior less and running the fan. Any other/better ideas? I recently got a Car Air freshener (Credit card points redeemed!) The bottle has perfume liquid in it and has a slot on top to keep it open and shut. What I wish to know is, should it be kept open always or keep it open only as and when needed i.e. when you are in the Car Normally what's the life of such fresheners..this one has about 100 ml of liquid. Thanks, ...

Filed under: Car Tech , Green Tech Now that biofuels are pretty much out of the running to save our planet, the not-so-subtly-named, New York-based company called Zero Pollution Motors plans to produce a new kind of hybrid Car : one that runs on compressed Air and gets up to 106 miles per gallon. The Car's engine would apparently work like a locomotive -- rather than steam, however, compressed Air would move the pistons to propel the Car along. When the Car hits 35 mph, a fuel-powered external combustion system kicks in and heats the Air, further increasing its volume and giving the vehicle more power. The company is pledging to build the first models in 2010, which will be sold for around $18,000. Air would be free, and pumped into the tanks using an on-board compressor. In other news, we're going to build a spaceship that runs on rainbows. Stay tuned! [From: Asylum ] Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Comments ...
