I read this news article today which is funny because I was just talking about this with somebody this yesterday. Related Articles [Calcium in Aging, Health, and Anti-Aging. Significance of calcium supplement for Anti-Aging.] Clin Calcium. 2008 Jul;18(7):973-9 Authors: Kubota M, Shimizu H For prevention of osteoporosis and debilitating bone fractures, poor calcium intake has long been a major public health problem in Japan. However, few randomized controlled studies have been conducted to clarify the relationship between calcium intake and bone mineral density, and the effect of the prevention of bone fractures. Therefore we reviewed the articles about the evidence for calcium intake and bone fracture incidence in European, American and Asian. We get the results that many articles supported the basis of current health guidelines for the prevention of osteoporosis that recommended increasing calcium intake to the recommended age-related daily allowance levels. One important reason is the big delay - and advantage - women have over men in terms of cardiovascular disease, like heart attack and stroke. Women develop these problems usually in their 70s and 80s, about 10 years later than men, who develop them in their 50s and 60s. For a long time, doctors thought the difference was due to estrogen. But studies have shown that this may not be the case, and now we know that giving estrogen to women post-menopause can actually be bad for them. One reason for that delay in onset of cardiovascular disease could be that women are relatively iron-deficient compared to men - especially younger women, those in their late teens and early 20s - because of menstruation. Iron plays a very important part in the reactions in our cells that produce damaging free radicals, which glom onto cell membranes and DNA, and may translate into Aging the cell. In fact, in our diets, red meat is the main source of iron, and lack of iron is probably one major reason that being vegetarian is healthy for you. There was a very good study looking at the intake of red meat and heart disease in Leiden in the Netherlands: in regions where people didn't eat red meat, those populations had half the rate of heart attack and stroke compared to the populations that did eat red meat. L ast week in Tokyo, Toyota Motor Corporation showed off prototypes of the Winglet , described as a "personal transport assistance robot ridden in a standing position." The immediate response on these shores? Toyota is trying to create a "Segway killer," a reference to the much larger and faster rolling stand-up unit created by Dean Kamen in 2001. This characterization, in turn, has led to a debate over the value of such contraptions, with many bloggers and their responders concerned that so-called PTs (for Personal Transporters)   only pander to an increasingly sedentary society that, instead, ought to get off its collective duff and—dare we say it—actually walk. Such takes miss the point, as I see it. First, Toyota has no designs on the still-fledgling Segway. The Winglet is a different high-tech animal that, if commercialized, would aim to address a different market need. Also, at a top speed of just 3.7 miles per hour, it’s unlikely to be embraced by able-bodied humans fully capable of outpacing it with a moderately brisk walk. Toyota’s sights are set squarely on the emerging needs of Japan’s Aging society. By 2055, 40 percent of the country’s population is expected to be over the age of 65—the double-whammy of decreasing birthrate and increasing life expectancy. The Winglet, or some variation on this basic theme, could help the elderly continue to get around and maintain the breadth and depth of their lives—realizing psychological ...

Some guy in Japan just bought the farm by working too hard. You heard right. He was 45, the lead engineer for a Toyota hybrid car division. While he was helping us reduce our dependence on oil, the poor guy ran out of gas. And he didn't even live as long as some of our Aging rock stars. You know the economy is in bad shape when an auto worker doesn't last as long as Keith Richards. Prior to his death this dedicated worker had been averaging over 80 hours of overtime per month. Which I guess should now be referred to as "six feet undertime." ...

hether its a rumba with your retriever, a polka with your poodle, or a samba with your Scottish terrier, dancing with your dog is the latest craze in increasingly dog-crazy Japan, according to this report by Reuters . Dancing lessons have joined a long list of things to do with your dog in Japan, where the $9.5 billion pet industry is thriving, and dog-friendly hotels and cafes are popping up all over. Japan has more dogs and cats than children under 15, the result of an Aging population and a declining birthrate. Animals, and dogs especially, are often seen on the streets of Tokyo, dressed up in specially made clothes and being pushed about in strollers. And at dance class "Wan Nyan World", which means "Woof Meow" in Japanese, dog-lovers and their reluctant partners dance to everything from waltzes to ABBA's "Dancing Queen". "Whether it's a Chihuahua or a big Saint Bernard, if you have the right music and moves, any dog can dance. Even age doesn't matter," said 51-year-old Mayumi Ozuma, who teaches the class. "Dog dancing allows owners and their dogs to show their individuality." ...

Did you know that salt has anti-Aging properties and promotes relaxation? Me neither, but luxury Japanese spa, Saltasia , is based entirely on the idea that women (at least those for whom money is no object) would gladly pay a premium to spend time in rooms lined with hexagon-shaped salt tiles with fancy colored LED lights behind them. Joining fees are between $1,000 and $25,000, so this is no regular day spa; it's a long-term investment in peace of mind. I would love to see a menu of treatments. Via Trends in Japan . ...

A recent article points out that “Nutraceuticals May Be Near Tipping Point in the U.S." While the average American is spending $90 per year on functional (read: health benefiting ) foods and beverages to the tune of a whopping $27 billion last year, the Center for Culinary Development and Packaged Facts claim that their research shows the category is about to get much bigger. "These products have been a huge business in Japan and Europe for years, and their already-impressive growth on this continent is now posed for serious take-off, says the 2008 Culinary Trend Mapping Report on Emerging Health & Wellness ." No surprise so far. Aging Baby Boomers and nutritional concerns have fueled consumer purchases of vitamin-enhanced water, juice and cereal; probiotic-laced yogurt and tooth-whitening gum. However, the report discussed emerging trends that looked interesting (the article cites five trends, but I counted seven): • “Huetrition” advances the idea of eating as many colored foods as possible. The natural pigments found in produce are valuable sources of phytonutrients, so this makes sense. Though this is simplistic, the basic concept: eat as many different colored foods as possible to achieve a balanced diet. • “Beauty” foods and beverages contain antioxidants and collagen as well as skin-improving vitamins and minerals to combat free radicals. The article notes that “foods that combine function and indulgence” are ideal for some consu ...

This makes me so sad. Robots in general have always made me sad, and it only got worse after I saw AI . In movies, relationships with robots are often doomed, and remind us of that sorry state of being where you love something that can't love you back, whether the unrequited one is the human or the robot. In Japan, they're developing robots to care for the elderly, in anticipation of the Aging of the population, which will be 40% elderly by 2055. This inevitably means that many, many senior citizens in Japan will be living alone, which is hard to imagine, considering that in Asia today, adult children typically take care of elderly parents. The University of Tokyo is leading this project to create these helper robots as part of the Information and Robot Technology Research Initiative, in conjunction with Toyota Motor Corp. and other private companies. The focus of the project is to develop sensor technology that would equate to the five human senses so that the robots can make physical contact with humans and respond to objects in the household environment. Development of tactile senses is crucial if these robots are to possess the keen sense of touch necessary for human interaction and handling of objects. This project is forming the groundwork for a new and potentially enormous industry, but right now, it sounds like science fiction. Via The Nikkei Weekly (subscription).
