Related Articles Inflammation and endothelial dysfunction during Aging: role of NF-{kappa}B. J Appl Physiol. 2008 Jul 3; Authors: Csiszar A, Wang M, Lakatta EG, Ungvari ZI One of the major conceptual advances in our understanding of the pathogenesis of age-associated cardiovascular diseases has been the insight that age-related oxidative stress may promote vascular inflammation even in the absence of traditional risk factors associated with atherogenesis (e.g. hypertension or metabolic diseases). In the present review we summarize recent experimental data suggesting that mitochondrial production of reactive oxygen species, innate immunity, the local TNFalpha converting enzyme (TACE)-TNFalpha and the renin-angiotensin system may underlie NF-kappaB induction and endothelial activation in aged arteries. The theme that emerges from this review is that multiple pro-inflammatory pathways converge on NF-kappaB in the aged arterial wall, and that the transcriptional activity of NF-kappaB is regulated by multiple nuclear factors during Aging, including nuclear enzymes PARP-1 and SIRT-1. We also discuss the possibility that nucleophosmin (NPM or nuclear phosphoprotein B23), a known modulator of the cellular oxidative stress response, may also regulate NF-kappaB activity in endothelial cells. The realization almost always prompts a double take, a moment of inspection, maybe even a debate: Is baby-faced Barack Obama, the symbol of a younger political generation, actually Aging in front of us? Archaeologist says a few rocks could be historically significant The verdict is still out on whether Glyn Hall has discovered historical artifacts or worthless rocks. Chris Stevenson, regional archaeologist for the state Department of Historic Resources, yesterday examined dozens of possible petroglyphs and sculptures of bears, eagles and human faces. Hall believes he has found more than 100 artifacts since last month around an organic vegetable garden on the farm he lives on near Elk Hill in western Goochland County. “Somebody’s definitely fiddled with this one,” Stevenson said while looking at a boulder. “It’s not natural. I see an eagle. A person made it, but it could be 50 years old, or it could be 500 years old.” A surface find such as Hall’s can’t be dated, Stevenson said, because anyone could have dropped the rocks there. Hall hopes to organize a professional archeological dig in the fall, which he is confident will uncover an Indian settlement. “If an excavation uncovers a hearth or a pit with a carved bear, then you can make a definite link,” Stevenson said. Many of the pieces Stevenson examined were probably formed by nature or marked by the blades of farm machinery, he said. “The rocks are millions of years old,” Stevenson said. “Over a million years, that rock is going to get a lot of wrinkles.” A few, though, show signs of something more historically significant. One, slightly larger than a hand, not only exhibits the ... Source: www.fwicki.com --- 1 day ago
