Last week’s border war with Washington had a slightly different wrinkle for me than in previous years. Now a year into living in Seattle , I was far more familiar with the Huskies players than in the past. With the Dawgs opening the season versus UO, I listened to a lot of slanted local sports radio and read the Seattle papers intently, mostly looking for hints of any improvement on the part of UW. While it was quarterback Kyle Reed who came off the bench to rally San Jose State for a season-opening victory over UC Davis last Saturday, much of the credit has to go to the Spartan defense. Regarded as one of the top units in the Western Athletic Conference, San Jose State slammed the door on UC Davis after the Football Championship Subdivision Aggies led 10-0 just 14 minutes into the game. In fact, both Spartan touchdowns were set up by its defense in a 13-10 victory. "We came out sluggish," San Jose State cornerback Christopher Owens told the San Jose Mercury-News. "We just fought through the hard times." Owens came up with an interception deep in San Jose State territory to end a UC Davis scoring threat late in the game. Defensive end Jeff Schwieger, a Southern California transfer, had a fumble recovery to set up the Spartans' first score and then a big three-and-out by head coach Dick Tomey's defense gave the ball back to Reed with 1:23 to play. Reed capitalized on the opportunity, driving SJSU to the winning score. His 17-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Kevin Jurovich with eight seconds remaining was the difference. Entering the season opener as one of three quarterbacks that Tomey planned to rotate, Reed won the starting job against Nebraska this Saturday with his first-game play. This is fascinating insofar as the three major perspectives of the decision: NMSU, Seton Hall and Herb Pope The good news for New Mexico State and Marvin Menzies is that they won't have to wonder when Pope will consider another transfer or decide to turn pro . They don't have to be the team worried that he will do something else really stupid, and make them look like a program that will take any player with talent regardless of the baggage. On-the-court, another talented sophomore, Wendell McKines, is staying in Las Cruces after contemplating a transfer. So, there is that. The downside is obviously losing a very talented, athletic power forward in Pope. After finally getting eligible, Pope immediately improved the Aggies and was very good. The Aggies also stood by Pope when he had to fight the NCAA over his academic eligibility. They didn't flinch when he got a charged with a DUI while still waiting to get approval from the NCAA. New Mexico State put a lot into getting Pope eligible to play, and only got 16 games out of it. For Seton Hall, given Pope's history it is risk, but for Coach Bobby Gonzalez, it is desperately needed gamble. They are getting a very talented and athletic front court player -- one of the ...
