Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin met her very first world leaders Tuesday, embarking on a crash course on foreign policy. ABC News reports that she met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Colombian President Alvaro Uribe and that she sat down with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger for insights on Georgia, Russia, China and Iran. No doubt there will be a pop quiz if John McCain wins and she becomes vice president. McCain's camp has put a force field around the Alaska governor in recent weeks, and some in the media speculate that this is to keep her from dealing with unscripted questions from voters and reporters. And it was even worse during these diplomacy sessions. Reporters were actually banned from the start of the meetings to stop them from asking questions of Palin. Before Palin's first meeting with Karzai, campaign aides told the pool reporters that followed her they could not go into meetings but that photographers and a video camera crew would be let in for pictures. President Bush and members of Congress routinely allow reporters to attend photo ops, and the reporters often ask questions at the beginning of private meetings before they're ushered out. Not this time. Two or more news organizations, including the Associated Press, objected to their reporters' exclusion and were told that the decision was not subject to discussion. When aides backed down, campaign spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt said the Reporter ba ...

The Pakistani military flew helicopter missions into Afghanistan to help the Taliban during a firefight with U.S. Marines in 2007, according to a story in DefenseNews . The story quotes Marine Lt. Col. Chris Nash, who led a U.S. team embedded with Afghan forces in the Tora Bora region on the Afghan-Pakistan border, where Al Qaida and Taliban forces are thought to be hiding. Nash said that he and his troops did not see the Pakistani copter but received information about it from the Afghan intelligence service, which allegedly had a source in the Taliban camp. The copter flew several resupply missions to a Taliban base 10 to 12 miles inside Afghanistan during the June 2007 fight, Nash told Reporter Sean Naylor. The relationship between rogue segments of the Pakistan military and the Taliban is one of the touchier parts of the alliance between the U.S. and Pakistani governments. Naylor's story includes a strong denial from the Pakistan Embassy in Washington. Tony Perry, San Diego Photo: Marine Lance Cpl. Liab Cheng in the mountains near the Pakistani border. Allied combat deaths in Afghanistan surpassed those in Iraq for a second straight month in June. Meanwhile, New Yorker Reporter Sy Hersh writes that U.S. covert operators are infiltrating Iran . What do these two developments have in common? Maybe nothing. But as we report in today’s Daily News , one new factor in the record high casualties of the ever-escalating Afghan war is that American troops are suddenly dying along the country’s border with Iran. At least 10 Americans have been killed in action since May 25 in Afghanistan’s Farah province , which lies on the Iranian border. It’s worth noting that Hersh’s story claims U.S. operatives are cultivating Sunni allies opposed to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who live in Iran’s Baluchestan province - which just happens to abut Afghanistan’s Farah province. According to Pentagon statements, a few of the casualties were killed during operations ostensibly in two eastern Farah districts: Gulistan and Bala Baluk , which are near Helmand province. Helmand has been the site of some of the war’s worst fighting, and U.S. and NATO commanders say they have squeezed some Taliban out of Helmand and into Farah. But when I asked the Camp Pendleton, Calif., Marines to identify the Farah districts where their men died, I instead heard back from a New York National Guard colonel, whose task force trains Afghan National Security Forces. Lt. Col. Paul Fanning, the spokesman, wouldn’t name th ...

In what should send shockwaves through the Republican Party, Republican Vice President nominee, Sarah Palin, called for President Bush to step down as President. In referring to President Bush's August, 2007 comments that our bombings in Afghan have killed innocent civilians, Palin told Fox News Reporter Carl Cameron: "Some of his comments that he has made about the war that I think may -- in my world- disqualifies someone from consideration as commander in chief." Palin said, "Some of his comments about Afghanistan and what we are doing there supposedly- just air raiding villages and killing civilians. That's reckless." The McCain campaign immediately clarified Palin's statement. "Sarah had mistakenly memorized the wrong politician's comments," said spokesman Tucker Bounds. But Palin was referring to the President's comments during a joint press conference with Afghani President Karzai where the President alluded to American bombing raids that had killed READ THE SHOCKING DETAILS OF PALIN'S CALL OUT OF BUSH RIGHT HERE. This week, as Afghanistan continued to outpace Iraq in the two countries' olympic race toward self-destruction, the Loya Jirga, or Afghan parliament, debated whether to use pohantun,  the Pashtu word for 'university,' or daneshgah,  the Dari word, in the new higher education law. Delegates also argued over which of the nation's two official languages should be used in class.    Pashtu, the majority language, is spoken in most of the country by the Pashtun, the traditional rulers of Afghanistan. Dari, related to Farsi, or Persian, is used mostly by those in the country's northwest who live closer to the Iran border.   A Reporter for a state-run newspaper was recently fined for using the Dari word for 'university' instead of the Pashtu one which is on Kabul University’s official seal.     The seal of Kabul University, which opened its doors in 1932, shows the name in Latin and Pashtu. Initially, KU's instructors, mostly from abroad, taught in a variety of European languages. It's not clear what language is used in classrooms today, but even though Afghanistan has two official languages, the government now favors the Pashtu word for 'university,' not the Dari one.   Language has often been a flash point in Afghan education, though until recently, education hasn't been much of a national priority in a country known for the routine destruction of its own cultural heritage and whose national flower is the opium poppy.   According to Mobin Sh ...

In a rare English-language message partially aired Sunday that is believed to be from Al-Qaida's No. 2 leader, Ayman al-Zawahri claimed Pakistan is now "virtually ruled from the American Embassy." The Pakistani ARY channel gave a copy of the tape, whose authenticity could not immediately be verified, to The Associated Press. However, an AP Reporter who has reviewed his past recordings said the voice sounds like that of al-Zawahri. It is not clear when the tape was made, but it includes apparently recent pictures of ex-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and others in the ruling coalition, indicating it was created since the February election that brought President Pervez Musharraf's foes to power. The audio overlays a series of images, including a static one of al-Zawahri, who along with Osama bin Laden is believed to be hiding in the rugged and lawless region along the Afghan-Pakistan border. Earlier this month, CBS News reported it had obtained a copy of an intercepted letter from unnamed sources in Pakistan that urgently requested a doctor to treat al-Zawahri. A spokesman for a top Taliban leader in Pakistan denied the report. ...

Pakistani forces on Monday trained gunfire and dropped bombs on Islamic militants in and around the main town of a tribal region next to the Afghan border, forcing thousands of residents to flee, witnesses said. At least seven people have been killed in recent bombardments, area residents said. An Associated Press Reporter in Khar, the main town in the Bajur tribal region, said he could hear bursts of gunfire on Monday. Few people were moving in the streets, as security forces continued to attack militants staking out positions. The U.S. has urged Pakistan to crack down on insurgents in the thinly governed tribal belt along the frontier, which is considered a haven for militants attacking government and NATO troops in Afghanistan. The new government has instead sought to strike peace deals with Pakistani insurgent groups, though with little obvious success. Details of the fighting in Bajur have been sketchy, with few officials responding to calls and conflicting claims emerging on casualties. ...

Yesterday, Presidential candidate John McCain's campaign angrily lashed out at the NY Times , calling the Old Gray Lady a "pro-Obama organization." The Times had published an article about how McCain campaign manager Rick Davis "was paid more than $30,000 a month for five years as president of an advocacy group set up by the mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to defend them against stricter regulations." Yesterday, campaign adviser Steve Schmidt said, "Whatever the New York Times once was, it is today not by any standard a journalistic organization... This is an organization that is completely, totally, 150 percent in the tank for the Democratic candidate, which is their prerogative to be. .. It is a pro-Obama organization that every day attacks the McCain campaign, attacks Sen. McCain, attacks Gov. Palin and excuses Sen. Obama.” Politico has an article on McCain's love-hate relationship . Former Times Reporter Todd S. Purdum said, “I don’t think that kind of statement represents anything like John McCain’s true views about The New York Times, and I don’t think it represents Steve Schmidt’s real views, either. I think the McCain camp is frustrated with the current climate, and with the tough coverage of its sharp tactics, and is blaming the messenger – the oldest trick in the book.” But speaking of the McCain-Palin campaign and the media: During VP candidate Sarah Palin's meeting with Afghan president Hamid Karzai, the me ...

Here's one of the differences between presidential candidate Barack Obama and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin that deserves close scrutiny. This week, Obama, a Democrat, proposed that all federal conference and committee meetings on budget and legislation be held in full view of the public. Sarah Palin, Republican candidate for the vice presidency, who has yet, six weeks before the election, to hold a press conference, met with world leaders and barred reporters from attending the meetings. She later relented, but only after major news organizations like CNN and the Associated Press threatened to pull photographers and a television crew from the assignment as well. She wanted photos and video that showed her looking vice presidential. She didn't want sound bytes that might show her ignorance of foreign policy. She finally allowed one Reporter with a notebook in to her meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai - for less than a minute. What do I glean from this? One candidate will try to solve, if he gets the support of a lackluster Congress, what is a serious problem in the United States - lack of accountability. Another will choose to keep the American people in the dark. Yes, I deliberately compare the first tier Democratic candidate and the second tier Republican candidate for a reason. There is a chance that Republican presidential candidate John McCain, who is 72 and has been treated for cancer six times, will die o ...
