Cancer. 2008 Oct 2; Authors: Prasad PK, Sun CL, Baker KS, Francisco L, Forman S, Bhatia S, Shankar SM BACKGROUND.: Long-term hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) Survivors have a high prevalence of severe and chronic health conditions, placing significant demands on the healthcare system. The objective of the current study was to evaluate and compare the healthcare utilization by Adult Hispanic and non-Hispanic white long-term Survivors of HCT. METHODS.: A mailed questionnaire was used to assess self-reported healthcare utilization in 3 domains: general contact with healthcare system, general physical examination outside cancer center (GPE), and cancer/HCT center visit. Eligible individuals had undergone HCT between 1974 and 1998, at age >/=21 years, and had survived >/=2 years after HCT. RESULTS.: The cohort included 681 non-Hispanic white and 137 Hispanic Survivors. The median age at HCT was 38.3 years, and the median length of follow-up was 6.6 years. Hispanic Survivors had lower family income and education and were more likely to lack health insurance. The prevalence of GPE increased significantly over time among non-Hispanic whites (67% at 2-5 years to 76% at 11+ years) but remained unchanged among Hispanics (66% to 61%). Cancer/HCT center visits decli ... Source: www.hollywood.com --- 25 days ago

World J Pediatr. 2008 Aug;4(3):165-72 Authors: Salcioğlu E, Başoğlu M BACKGROUND: Treatment of child earthquake Survivors is a relatively less investigated issue in disaster research. A review of the evidence on the mental health effects of earthquakes, risk factors, and findings from treatment studies may provide useful insights into effective treatment of traumatized children. DATA SOURCES: Studies of child and adolescent earthquake Survivors included the PILOTS database (electronic index for literature on psychological trauma) and relevant evidence from various studies of Adult earthquake Survivors. RESULTS: Evidence points to elevated rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and earthquake-related fears in children and adolescents. Traumatic stress appears to be mediated by loss of control over fear induced by exposure to unpredictable and uncontrollable earthquakes. This implies that interventions enhancing sense of control over fear are likely to be most effective. Recent studies indeed show that a control focused behavioral treatment (CFBT) involving mainly encouragement for self-exposure to feared situations is highly effective in facilitating recovery from earthquake trauma. Evidence also suggests that CFBT can be delivered through booklets and similar media. CONCLUSIONS: Pilot studies suggest that CFB ... Source: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov --- 1 day ago
Related Articles The influence of developmental life stage on quality of life in Survivors of prostate cancer and their partners. J Cancer Surviv. 2008 Jun;2(2):84-94 Authors: Harden J, Northouse L, Cimprich B, Pohl JM, Liang J, Kershaw T INTRODUCTION: Although prostate cancer is prevalent, little information is available on how it affects couples' quality of life (QOL) according to their age cohort. The purpose of this study was to examine how quality of life, self-efficacy and appraisal of the illness experience vary among men with prostate cancer and their partners according to age cohort: middle age (50-64); young-old (65-74); and old-old (75-84). Using an Adult Developmental and Family Stress framework, this study focuses on how normative (developmental stage) and non-normative stressors (prostate cancer) may affect a couple's ability to adapt. METHODS: A descriptive, comparative design was used to examine age-related differences in quality of life and selected psychosocial variables in 69 men with prostate cancer and their spouses. Cross-sectional data were obtained using standardized instruments with adequate reliability and validity. ANCOVA and MANCOVA were used to determine differences among age groups. RESULTS: Findings indicated that patients who were ages 65-74 had better QOL and higher self-efficacy than patients ages 50-64 and less negative appraisal of illness than the other two groups. Spouses ages 50-64 reported the m ... Source: uk.reuters.com --- 17 days ago

SUNDAY, Sept. 21 (HealthDay News) -- Women who had a lumpectomy and radiation to combat breast cancer have an overall quality of life several years after treatment that's on par with most Adult American women, a new report says. "Treatments for breast cancer may decrease quality of life temporarily, but this is evidence that Survivors, on average, will return to a normal quality of life," lead researcher Dr. Gary Freedman, an attending physician in the department of radiation oncology at Philadelphia's Fox Chase Cancer Center, said in a news release issued by the center. The findings, based on a survey of 1,050 women with early-stage breast cancer who were treated with breast-conserving surgery and radiation with or without chemotherapy and hormone therapy, were expected to be presented Sunday at the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology annual meeting, in Boston. The brief survey, taken by the women at various points in their follow-up -- from three months to 15 years after treatment -- found the breast cancer Survivors across all age groups said they had a very high quality of life and state of health comparable to the general U.S. female population. Over the years, the Survivors tended more often to say they experienced no or only some problems. For three questions dealing with anxiety, pain and the ability to do usual activities, the Survivors tended to improve from reporting "some problems" to "no problems" ...
