From NPR's Day to Day radio show and reporter Nancy Mullane: Every year, more families are undergoing "open adoptions," meaning children remain in contact with their birth mothers after joining their new families. Findings published in the Journal of Family Psychology this month confirm that open adoptions are changing the definition of "family" for Adoptees and their loved ones. Stream the report here . I think the most interesting confessions on True Mom Confessions (TMC) regarding adoption have come from Adoptees, birth family members and those who are somehow related to or touched by an adoptee. I think they speak boldly about adoption in ways that the rest of us can't do because they had the absolute least choice in their existence and subsequent adoption than even the birth mother with the least amount of choice regarding her child's placement. I find it interesting to look at some of these and see how others' choices... [...] Read more! ... Source: borrowednotes.wordpress.com --- 35 days ago
Cross communication between adult Adoptees is very important, as I quickly found out when I first began to “meet” and commiserate online with other Adoptees. Over the years, I’ve been privvy to many organizations and groups started BY us and FOR us. Any socially and culturally aware adult adoptee will tell you how important that distinction is. So, when [...] ... Source: joy21.wordpress.com --- 31 days ago
Seriously, someone who knows a lot about Adoptees. Someone who has written interesting books. Okay they said standards and not standardeds, I am just being childish as Adoptees are want to be. I came across a very important post-slash-request over at Open Adoption Support. I feel the need to pass it on to you and hope that you will continue to pass it on. In short: some research is being done on adult Adoptees who lived through open adoptions. Their opinions and experiences are requested via a survey. And now, of course, the long and wordy version! After reading the post, I contacted Christy Sherman to get some more information about the survey,... [...] Read more! ... Source: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov --- 24 days ago
Related Articles Inattentive/overactive children with histories of profound institutional deprivation compared with standard ADHD cases: a brief report. Child Care Health Dev. 2008 Aug 21;34(5):596-602 Authors: Sonuga-Barke EJ, Rubia K Background The Inattention/Overactivity/Impulsiveness (I/OA) behavioural cluster diagnostic of ADHD is recognized as a characteristic outcome of early institutional care. Methods We compared the symptom and neuropsychological profiles of children with a history of I/OA and early severe deprivation (D-I/OA: n = 13) with standard clinical ADHD cases (S-ADHD; N = 20) and children who had experienced deprivation but were not pervasively I/OA (ERA-controls; n = 22). The mean age of testing was around 13 years. D-I/OA and ERA-controls were selected from the English and Romanian Adoptees (ERA) study and had spent their early lives in the extremely depriving Romanian institutions of the Ceausescu regime and were later adopted into UK families. Results ADHD symptoms for male D-I/OA and S-ADHD cases showed marked similarities across symptom domains. In contrast, girls with D-I/OA were more similar to ERA controls than to ADHD cases. Longitudinal data suggested that this was due to a remission of symptoms in D-I/OA girls. Neuropsychological profiles of males and females with D-I/OA, however, were similar: both were more impaired than S-ADHD and ERA controls. Discussion Children with D-I/OA were more neuropsychologi ... Source: www.macnn.com --- 24 days ago

Solomon Henderson inherited just three things from his birth parents, who left him at an Ethiopian orphanage when he was 1 year old: a picture of Jesus, a plastic crucifix and HIV. As one of some 14,000 Ethiopian children born with the virus every year, Solomon's prospects for survival _ much less adoption _ were grim. But Erin Henderson's heart stirred when she saw him, and she decided, on the spot, to adopt him. 'They told me that they weren't sure he would live through the weekend,' Henderson said by e-mail from her home in rural Wyoming, where she lives with her husband and 11 children, two of whom are HIV-positive Adoptees from Ethiopia. ...
