On Thursday, Photobucket introduced two new features: a way to skin albums and an overhauled organizational tool that lets users drag and drop photos into various folders. Of the two, the organizer is the biggest enhancement. Users are taken to a dark gray editing environment that lets them make changes without the entire page having to refresh. Everything is drag and drop, which is useful for ferrying photos and videos between albums, and reordering album arrangement. There's also support for batch operations, so you can quickly move, reorder, and rename multiple photos at once. Compared with Adobe Photoshop Express and Flickr's Organizr , this new organizer isn't nearly as technical. Missing are things like group tagging, and control of the metadata. Considering you can add and edit tags from the individual photo pages this seems like an oversight. The new organizer is black and sleek, but is missing some editing capabilities found elsewhere on the site. (Credit: CNET Networks) The other big feature is the skinning of album pages. This is just another level of personalization you can give an album short of reordering the images. There are a few hundred themes to choose from, and like a blog theme on Wordpress.com , you can preview what it looks like before applying it. Each theme changes the colors of various page elements, with the centerpiece being the background. I found most of the themes with background images to be too di ...

The latest report from the Pew Internet survey machine says, "69 percent of online Americans use webmail services, store data online, or use software programs such as word processing applications whose functionality is located on the Web." What they really mean is: A lot of people use Hotmail. But while the 69 percent number overstates the case, there are some surprising stats in the details: Roughly one in three Americans, the survey says, use an online app such as Google Docs or Adobe Photoshop Express. I'm honestly skeptical of that number — did respondents confuse one of Google's search features with Google Docs? But one in three store photos online. Considering how hard it was just to post a picture of your cat to your blog a few years ago, that's pretty big. I only wish Pew had asked those folks if they'd also made backups. ...

The next version of Windows after Vista won't include Windows Mail, Windows Photo Gallery, and Windows Movie Maker. Instead, Microsoft will offer the Windows Live versions of these apps as optional downloads. Brian Hall, the general manager for Windows Vista, told CNET late Monday that "Microsoft made the decision to remove the tools from Windows for several reasons, including a desire to issue new operating system releases more quickly. The move also removes the confusion of offering and supporting two different programs." It also puts Microsoft in more direct competition with popular cloud-based apps like Google Docs, Adobe Photoshop Express and Yahoo's Jumpcut movie editor. Don't get the idea that all Windows apps will be Web-based, though. You'll still have to pay for desktop versions of MS Office and Outlook, Redmond's real moneymakers. ...

After Adobe jumped into the wonderful world of web apps with their lightweight version of Photoshop, dubbed Photoshop Express , they’re releasing Photoshop Mobile as a free beta for US-based owners of Windows Mobile-based phones. Yes, that sounds like a lot of restrictions, and I honestly cannot understand why only US-based users (which excludes me) can use the software, but it’ll give me a wonderful opportunity to go hard on them without even trying the thing out. Just kidding. In any case, the mobile version of Photoshop (take that with a grain of salt, you can’t work on your 100+ layer illustration on your mobile just yet) gives you the ability to upload photos from your phone to your Photoshop account, with 2GB of storage space; access photos from anywhere you are and share them with your friends. Yes, there are already dozens of applications that offer this functionality, but I reckon that Photoshop Mobile is probably as good a choice as any. ---Related Articles at Mashable | All That's New on the Web: Adobe’s Web-Based Photoshop Express On Its Way More Previews of Adobe’s Online Photoshop Express Microsoft Licenses Flash Lite; Whoa, What About Silverlight? According to a recent survey by Pew Research Center's Internet Project, 69% of all Internet users in U.S. have either stored data online or used a web-based software application. "These users are making use of 'cloud computing,' an emerging architecture by which data and applications reside in cyberspace, allowing users to access them through any web-connected device." At the same time, most of these users are still unfamiliar with the term "cloud computing." Listed below is a percentage breakdown of Internet users doing select set of online activities that involve storing data online or accessing applications in cyberspace.
