If you're not going to be in a bar somewhere playing Palin Bingo , and you want to watch the debate online, here are a few options: CNN Live -- CNN will stream the debate online live. David All, a Republican technology consultant, and Time's Ana Marie Cox will discuss the debate online between 8-11 pm East Coast time. All jokes that the experience will be like watching "Mystery Science Theater 3000." Hmmm, that's just what we need. MySpace will also stream the debate online at MyDebates.org . Conveniently, you can also register to vote at the same time. Since voter registration deadlines are looming , it might be a good place for you to stop off if you haven't already filled out the form and mailed it in. MSNBC will also stream the debate live (you can watch below,) as will Current TV . Current TV has used Adobe to embed tweets into its broadcast. They tested the system last Friday . If you want a global perspective on the debate, check out Livestation , a company that's based in London. They've partnered with Al Jazeera to bring viewers an online video stream with a chatroom. The drawback to this particular option is that you have to download a Livestation Player.  Meanwhile, The Huffington Post's OffTheBus citizen-driven reporting project is asking its readers to write in with their local Media pundits' reactions to the debate. If enough people report in on a timely manner, it could make for a refreshingly different perspective ...

We highlighted a few of our favorite free replacements for paid tools about two weeks ago, and boy, did you respond. From Adobe replacments to Windows utilities, niche graphics apps to virtualization, our readers had a wealth of no-cost alternatives to recommend. We listened and compiled, so check out some of your fellow readers' best suggestions for extending your computer without expending a single penny. Photo by AGoK . Orb instead of Slingbox ($130) This one should have been obvious, considering we've taken a screenshot tour and shown how this free streaming software can work with your Wii , but Orb has just quietly provided the same services folks dish out more than 100 smackers for, or, in the case of DVR devices, endless monthly fees, without tooting its own horn too loudly. If you've got a Windows computer or Media Center PC available, Orb can dish out live or recorded TV, video files, audio, feeds, or even a few games to any desktop, laptop, Windows Mobile phone, or even a PS3 or XBox 360. Recommended by Adam B . CDBurnerXP (or InfraRecorder) in place of Nero ($60) If you bought your computer new, there's a good chance it came bundled free with a CD or DVD recording package, like Nero. There's also a good chance that the package has its advance features disabled, or that it's designed to constantly run in the background, force a "Media Player" into your file associations, and generally run roughshod over your system prefer ...

Watch out, twhirl. There’s a new sheriff in town. Utterli (formerly Utterz) has just released an Adobe Air application that delivers their audio, video and text micro-blogging messages to your desktop. The app is small, but don’t be fooled because it packs a lot of features for such a little guy. Many of the most commonly used options are included, such as creating new messages, listening to audio, and watching video. After logging in, the first thing you’ll see is the public timeline, which displays all of the most recent messages sent by everyone. See our screencast for full details via the embed below or download the MP4 : Never miss an episode. Subscribe in your podcast Player . You can change this feed at any time by clicking view menu and choose any of four different options: - All: The default public timeline with everyone’s messages - Recent: Only messages from the friends you follow - Inbox: Only messages sent directly to you - Sent: Only messages that you’ve sent As far as audio and video playback is concerned, the app did a decent job handling Media. The quality and the performance wasn’t bad at all. The usual Player functions were all there as well: pause, play, volume control. However, some features seemed missing when it came to creating new messages with the app. For example, there’s no way to record an audio or video message at this time. All you can do is send text messages, which isn’t that bad since that’s all ...

Amazon.com's Video On Demand service, which allows you to preview and purchase streaming videos online, uses Adobe's Flash Media Server to deliver the video. Late last week, Reuters reported that hackers had discovered an exploit that would allow users to turn the free preview into the full stream, allowing folks to watch movies for free using software like Replay Media Catcher from Applian. Adobe took issue with Reuters' contention that Flash isn't secure — instead suggesting it was Amazon's fault for not enabling various security options such as streaming encryption and Player verification . Why did Adobe choose to blame a customer instead of quietly fixing the problem behind the scenes? Probably seemed easier. ...

Adobe ( NSDQ: ADBE ) confirmed today at a conference that it was indeed working on a Flash Player for the iPhone and that it will submit it soon to Apple ( NSDQ: AAPL ) for inclusion into the App Store, Flash Magazine reported . Since Apple will be the one that makes the final call on whether it's approved, who knows if it will ever make it on to the phone? Of course, many people have been waiting for the moment since often times it means videos and other content won't play in the browser. The possibility surfaced at the "Flash On The Beach" conference, where Adobe Systems' Paul Betlem, a senior director of engineering, was quoted as saying that his team is working on Flash on the iPhone, "but [the iPhone is] a closed platform." So, if Apple's game, Adobe will have the Player available "in a very short time." Check out the best business jobs in digital Media. Go here for paidContent.org Job Board. ...

The very busy, very pregnant “Saturday Night Live” star Amy Poehler is working with an Austin company on a new Web show she and several of her friends created. “Smart Girls at the Party” will debut in October from On Networks , a local company that distributes original HD-quality shows on its Web site as well as on iTunes, the Adobe Media Player and other sites and mobile content providers. “Smart Girls” will be aimed at young girls; each episode features an interview with a young lady with “a unique talent, community interest or point of view,” the company said in a press release. Poehler is joined by Meredith Walker, a former senior producer for Nickelodeon’s “Nick News” and head of talent at “Saturday Night Live,” as well as Amy Miles, host of PBS’s “Lomax: Hound of Music.” Poehler plans to leave “SNL” when she goes on maternity leave after the November election. She’s expected to return to NBC on a new show from “King of the Hill” and “The Office” executive producer Greg Daniels. Poehler is also the executive producer, creator and lead voice on Nickelodeon’s “The Mighty B!” ...

Akamai launches Openvideoplayer.com , a community site and industry initiative intended to facilitate the development and sharing of open standards and best practices for video Player applications that support a wide range of advertising technologies. Leading advertising technology companies, ad servers, video solution providers and platform companies have joined to provide industry best practices for online video Player development. Inaugural partners include: 24/7 Real Media, Adobe Corporation, BlackArrow, Clickability, EyeWonder, KickApps, Microsoft Corporation, OpenX, Panache, ScanScout and smartclip. As online video syndication and distribution matures, there are some fundamental technology barriers to growth. One of the most important development considerations is the video Player application, an increasingly strategic element as it impacts the way consumers experience video content and the Media brand, and enables a business model for the video content by controlling how and when ads are delivered. Specifically, the lack of a standards-based approach to the video Player application slows time to market and increases complexities around content syndication and revenue sharing between sites. OpenVideoPlayer.com Akamai is leading the effort, along with these companies to provide a forum dedicated to providing resources and encouraging a common approach to video Player development. The goals of this site are as follows: Facilitate ...

Digital Media company ON Networks will begin distributing outside content through its AllScreen Syndication Network, a decision that will open up its market, co-founder Jennifer Grogono says. ON Networks produces and distributes its own content to syndication platforms including iTunes, Adobe Media Player, Verizon, and TiVo. ON Networks will share revenue with the video content creators that use its syndication platform. The service can now deliver any advertising and content in high-definition to screens around the world through online, cable, mobile, gaming, podcasting, and satellite networks. Don Reisinger at TechCrunch reported on the deal this morning. Andy interviewed Grogono at the Omma Global conference in New York , where they were both panelists. In October, ON Networks will launch the first season of Saturday Night Live star Amy Poehler's new web series, "Smart Girls at the Party," which will feature Poehler interviewing young girls with unique talents and points of view. -- Kelsey Blodget , Associate Producer ...

An Adobe official has confirmed that Adobe is working on Flash technology for the iPhone, and that the Player will be available in a very short time if Apple gives it the OK, according to a report by CNET. Adobe already has Flash running on an iPhone emulator. Andy interviewed Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch about the evolution of Flash at the MIT Technology Review EmTech08 conference last week. Flash is the most broadly deployed technology on the web today and the Flash Player is responsible for drastically improving the online video viewing experience, according to Lynch. Flash would improve the viewing of web video and rich Media pages on the iPhone, so we hope Apple says yes to the technology sooner rather than later. Adobe will continue working on online video innovations, like text search within video, indexing video with search engines at different time points, and interactivity, Lynch says. -- Kelsey Blodget , Associate Producer ...

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Content distribution network Akamai Technologies launched Openvideoplayer.com in an effort to unite the video publishing industry around an standardized video Player. The base source code Akamai contributed to the Open Video Player has already been used by customers including Hulu and The NBA. The industry needs a Player "that is standard, much like the television is standard, and everyone knows, you know, how to easily develop content for it and how to insert the ads," Senior Industry Marketing Manager for Digital Media Suzanne Johnson says. Andy interviewed Johnson at the Akamai offices in Cambridge last week. Akamai teamed up with Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight to provide easy-to-use advertising plug-ins for the Open Video Player.  Partners for the initiative include 24/7 Real Media, Adobe Corporation, Microsoft, Clickability, and Panache. A standardized Player would certainly make audience measurement and ad delivery easier, and we'll be interested to see how this develops. -- Kelsey Blodget , Associate Producer ...
