USA Today curtain-raises Palin’s speech tonight with this story: “Call it McCain's Gamble. The Republican presidential candidate is pulling bigger crowds and a gusher of cash to his campaign since his unexpected pick Friday of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate. But questions about how rigorously John McCain vetted Palin and fresh scrutiny of the governor's record are fueling a larger debate about McCain's shoot-from-the-hip style and Palin's qualifications, in a crisis, to be president. The piece also previews the speech. Written by former White House speechwriter Matt Scully, it will combine autobiography and policy. ‘She's going to talk to the delegates about the future of this country, about how to reform broken institutions of government,’ says McCain strategist Steve Schmidt. ‘People will hear about her reform-and-change message’ and about Energy and its links to national Security. ‘She'll also communicate directly to the American people who she is,’ Schmidt says.”  The Washington Post adds, “In the speech, Palin is likely to emphasize her areas of policy expertise -- particularly Energy and political reform -- rather than focusing on her biography or gender. An initial version of the Address, which speechwriter Matthew Scully started crafting a week ago for an unnamed male vice-presidential pick, included plenty of attacks aimed at Democratic nominee Barack Obama along with ample praise for McCain, aides said. But t ...

The Democratic and Republican nominating conventions are fast approaching, and both candidates will be talking about pressing issues for all Americans, including Energy policy, national Security, and the economy. What's likely to be missing from their remarks, however, is the most significant long-term threat to the country's future: the issue of our real national debt -- $53 trillion in financial obligations. Based on our current liabilities and unfunded promises of Social Security and Medicare, taxes would have to more than double over the next few decades in order for the government to pay its bills and deliver on its commitments . Worse still, the programs on which Americans depend would become woefully underfunded. What kind of example does that set for many Americans who struggle to save even a small amount? Join the nation's former Comptroller General Dave Walker and ask the presidential candidates to wake up to the coming fiscal crisis and Address the issue plainly to the American people. Our country needs leadership on this issue. Take Action ...

He's written million-selling books about his early years and the meaning of public life. Now, Sen. Barack Obama, with the help of his campaign staff, has another side to share with readers: policy wonk. Start America's Energy Independence Revolution Without Dems It was as unexpected as it was unprecedented in U.S. House history. After already barely passing a resolution to give themselves a five week paid vacation, the Democrat Congress sneakily adjourned for the day in a craven attempt to escape Washington without a real vote to Address America’s high gas prices and Energy Security. It also, they laughed, would silence Republican members from discussing America’s Energy Security and independence on the record after votes. Per usual, the arrogant Democrat Congress – the most hated Congress in American history with good reason – was utterly wrong. Vowing the voices of the vast majority of the American people would not be silenced by the Democrat Congress’ Stalinist tactics, Republicans took to the dimly lit, microphone and C-Span silenced House Floor. There, they demanded a vote to lower gas prices by unleashing America’s oil and Energy resources from the clutches of the Left-wing special interests controlling Speaker Pelosi and her Democrat Congress. Led by Tom Price (Patriot-GA), Mike Pence (Patriot-IN), Lynn Westmoreland (Patriot-GA) and Henry Brown (Patriot-SC), what commenced as a spontaneous expression of American outrage at Speaker Pelosi and her party’s refusal to hold a vote and help working Americans, soon became a historic Republican “Speak-In” unmatched in U.S. House history. Over its course, some 50 members, including ...

By Kate Sheppard The Democratic Party today approved a platform that embraces presidential candidate Barack Obama's Energy policies. Included in that is his call for tax rebates to families struggling with high Energy costs. And in an op-ed in the Denver Post today, John Podesta and Timothy Wirth argue that the platform doesn't go far enough on Energy issues. Podesta is the president of the Center for American Progress and the former chief of staff to Pres. Bill Clinton, and Wirth is the president of the United Nations Foundation, and represented Colorado in both the House and Senate from 1975 to 1992. Here's the key part of the op-ed: The Democratic Party platform recognizes the Energy opportunity in its section on "Investing in American Competitiveness" -- but it does not go far enough. The size and urgency of this task require a president willing to make it the top domestic priority in the White House -- not pigeonholed as an Energy initiative or environmental initiative or even as a Security initiative, but made the centerpiece of his economic agenda. Indeed, it will demand that the president refocus the mission and responsibility of all relevant government agencies and convene them in a new National Energy Council in the White House. The success of this year's candidates and next year's elected leaders will rise and fall on how they Address the Energy issue. Those who convey the scale and scope -- and opportunity -- of trans ...

By Brad Johnson Originally posted at the Wonk Room . Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) told the Politico last week that "environmentalists will be forced to compromise next year and support the development of clean coal, nuclear power and other alternative fuels": We need to be able to Address a national Energy strategy and then try to work on environmental efficiencies as part of that plan. We can't just start with things like emission standards at a time when we're at a crisis with the entire national Energy policy . Webb's concept that one can construct a "national Energy strategy" first -- then "try to work on environmental efficiencies" second -- is completely misguided . The fuel-price shocks that rightly concern Webb are inextricably linked with the climate crisis. Numerous scientific , economic , and governmental reports make clear that the degradation of the planet's climate system is threatening our economic and national Security . As Al Gore described , "We're borrowing money from China to buy oil from the Persian Gulf to burn it in ways that destroy the planet. Every bit of that's got to change." The League of Women Voters -- a civic, not environmentalist organization -- recognizes how our national Energy policy needs to change, as their call for a moratorium on all new coal plants makes clear. In the words of national League President Mary G. Wilson, "Global warming is happening now." She explains that Congress is failing its mi ...

*Acclimatising to change * Phil Moore 24/07/2008 * The world at last seems to be waking up to climate change. But are government initiatives being driven by an awareness of environmental priorities or by other means? Phil Moore reports * The United States is in a unique position to Address climate change, but the continued fudging over the Kyoto protocol and the US administration’s reluctance to engage with the issue suggest the nature of climate change itself is not a top priority. Yet the issue seems to have found itself onto the White House agenda by other means. A National Intelligence Assessment statement (the NIC is a centre of strategic thinking within the US government which analyses foreign policy issues) in June considered the ‘implications of global climate change for US national Security interests by 2030’. Prompted by the findings of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC) Fourth Assessment - alongside US based climate research – the NIC concluded: ‘ that the most significant impact for the United States will be indirect and result from climate-driven effects on many other countries and their potential to seriously affect US national Security interests.’ It appears that global warming, in itself, is not enough to shake the West Wing. Presented as a problem of national Security however, action looks more likely. Meanwhile in the UK our renewable Energy policy seems to have drawn strength from a ...

U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg officially kicked off his re-election bid for Michigan’s 7th Congressional District seat Friday at NextDiesel’s biodiesel fuel facility in Adrian, calling for the support of alternative Energy and less dependence on foreign sources of fuels. “We’re fighting for the health, Security and prosperity of the place we call home and the people we call friends and family,” he said. Jason Eisenberg, NextDiesel’s marketing and sales director, said he was honored by the Tipton Republican’s presence and speech at the company, which recently observed its plant’s first anniversary of operation. “Congressman Walberg has been aggressive in his campaign for alternative fuels,” Eisenberg said. “With people like Congressman Walberg in Washington fighting for us, we are well on our way.” Guest speakers at Friday’s kickoff included Adrian College President Jeffrey Docking, State Sen. Cameron Brown and Jim Van Doren, chairman of the Lenawee County Commission.  Walberg appeared before a small group of supporters holding a gas can with a clipboard attached. He encouraged the audience to appeal to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to allow the party to make statements about proposed Energy bills that they said could help reduce gas prices. Pelosi dismissed the House for its five-week recess earlier this month before Republican members said they could Address the fuel issue. Walberg called the development of alternate fuel sources such as wi ...
