Effective treatment of opiate Addiction is the key to breaking the cycle of Addiction, local counselors say. “In southeastern Massachusetts, we have a problem that is devastating,” Colleen Labelle, a registered nurse at Boston Medical Center, said. “Children are dying. People are dying. It’s like the HIV epidemic all over again. If we do nothing, people will die.” Labelle was one of three speakers at a two-hour workshop on the treatment of opiate Addiction. The workshop, “Medication Assistance in the Treatment of Opioid Dependence,” was held Thursday at the Holiday Inn in Rockland. The program was sponsored by Arbour Counseling Services in Rockland, Boston Medical Center and Bridgewater State College. More than 30 local doctors, educators and substance-abuse counselors attended the workshop. “We have got a big problem, and it’s time we open our eyes to what is going on in our communities,” said Michael Gaudet, a licensed social worker at Arbour Counseling Services. Recent statistics show an alarming regional trend: the number of deaths from heroin overdoses has risen by 600 percent since 1990, while the increase for other drugs has been just 10 percent, according to the Bureau of Substance Abuse Services. In 2005, there were 797 opiate-related deaths in Massachusetts. Methadone, the prescription drug used to fight heroin Addiction, caused 146 overdose deaths in 2006. X-Files actor David Duchovny, 48, has recently checked into a rehab clinic in the US to treat his sex Addiction. Duchovny, who’s been married to actress Tea Leoni for 11 years and has two kids, is said to be finally seeking help after his wife gave him an ultimatum. Although it’s a condition that’s only been talked about openly in the past 10 years, some Experts estimate that around 1.8million people in the UK will experience a period of sex Addiction during their lifetimes. While some doctors remain sceptical, I’m prepared to accept that sex Addiction does exist and, as with any Addiction, the sufferers tend to have low self-esteem. These are people who just don’t feel good about themselves. Sex Addiction isn’t a chemical Addiction like heroin or nicotine but it does create a similar high. As with gambling or shopping addictions, for sex addicts pursuing encounters creates an adrenalin rush, which triggers the brain to release feel-good chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine. It’s this short-lived feeling of contentment that becomes addictive to susceptible people. SOME TYPICAL SEX ADDICT BEHAVIOUR / Excessive use of pornography / Compulsive masturbation / High-risk sex or anonymous sexual encounters / Compulsive telephone or internet sex / Multiple affairs ... The modern thriller has devolved to a variation of the same theme: attractive, scantily clad youths being chased by people in masks or costumes with nicknames like Jigsaw. Such films leave nothing to the imagination, and are simply graphically violent. But I'm sure many of you agree that Alfred Hitchcock's slow turning-of-the-screw is an infinitely more terrifying prospect. Because the horror in a psychological thriller could happen to you. "Things that go bump in the night" tend to scurry back under the bed, once the light goes on in the morning. But psychological horror lingers. Some Experts think our affinity for being scared in the dark is a primal adrenal Addiction, related to when primitive man was running for his life through the primordial swamp. Horror director Wes Craven calls scary films "boot camp for the psyche." He said audiences are addicted to such films because of an instinctive need to protect ourselves from the dangers of the real world. "If I can toughen up through these imaginary events, I can survive anything." Others believe that horror movies help us discharge anxiety over crises, real and imagined. But today's so called horror movies leave something to be desired. Although its trailer makes "Quarantine," opening today, look like gruesome fun with a "Blair Witch" twist, I'm guessing its really tacky and terrible - it wasn't screened in advance. If you see it and feel otherwise, let me know. "Saw V," due ... Source: clipmarks.com --- 72 days ago

Kimberly Young, clinical director of the Center for Internet Addiction Recovery, told Medill News Service that many addicts are hooked on one particular aspect of the Internet. The major ones include online gambling and gaming, sex sites, compulsive surfers and even Addiction to eBay. Coleen Moore of the Illinois Center for Addiction Recovery said that she has seen young adults who spend 14 to 18 hours a day at their computers. At that point, the Internet is keeping them from work, family life and friendships outside the virtual world. Young compared the Internet to alcohol. Many people can use it and then turn to something else but some lose control. She said that treatment is in its early stages, depending on therapy. Tags: net , Addiction ... By Jim Tankersley and Christi Parsons Fifth in an occasional series, United States of Anxiety ORLANDO -- Barack Obama and John McCain are promising voters a Tomorrowland of electric cars and high-speed trains and solar panels, a vision of American life without a drop of imported oil. But their plans to get there look more like Fantasyland. A host of energy policy Experts agree that true "energy independence"--a key catch phrase of this presidential campaign--would be far more expensive and disruptive than either candidate is telling you. Our oil Addiction hamstrings America's foreign policy and military, contributes to global warming and has robbed the nation of trillions of dollars. One of the country's leading energy modelers estimates that foreign-oil dependence cost our economy $750 billion this year, a little more than the daunting price tag of the proposed Wall Street bailout. The main culprit sits in your driveway: Due largely to massive increases in highway fuel consumption, our oil imports doubled in the last 30 years. But petroleum is everywhere--in asphalt, ink pens, burger wrappers. Replacing it won't be nearly as easy as it sounds on the campaign trail. In speech after speech, McCain and Obama extol energy independence and rip the federal government's failure to achieve it. McCain promises to secure "strategic independence" from foreign sources by 2025, with a plan that includes a $300 million prize for a super-effic ... Source: www.infozine.com --- 73 days ago

The number of pills a Henderson doctor prescribed for a Las Vegas man from January 2005 to June 2008 was so large an investigation by the Nevada Medical Examiners Board is warranted. During that period Dr. Kevin Buckwalter prescribed more than 20,000 pills for Michael Hammond, who had gone to him complaining of pain from a neck injury. Hammond admitted to Las Vegas Sun reporter Marshall Allen that within months of beginning his drug treatment he had no more pain complaints. He said he continued to seek refills anyway because the pills made him feel good. He eventually realized, he said, that he was addicted. Hammond, who has successfully emerged from an Addiction recovery program, contacted the Sun after Allen and reporter Alex Richards reported in July on the high rate of prescription drug use among Nevadans. Allen, assisted by Richards, reported Hammond’s experience with Buckwalter for Tuesday’s Sun. Their research included reviews of Hammond’s prescription drug and medical records that he shared after obtaining them from the state and from Buckwalter. Additionally, the Sun consulted with a Connecticut doctor, a Florida doctor and two other pain management Experts who practice locally. All four reached identical conclusions in their independent analyses of the records — Buckwalter should be investigated. Addictions to prescription drugs are increasing nationally. We believe doctors should be part of the solution. They should rec ...

Photos by Rena Effendi. Text by Rovshan Ismayilov Drug Addiction is growing rapidly in Azerbaijan, Experts and physicians say, and although the government has made important strides to fight the trend, lingering trouble areas could hamper a correction of the trend. The interior ministry reports that every eighth crime committed in Azerbaijan in 2006 -- or some 2,309 registered offenses -- was related to drugs. Police seized 531 kilograms of various drugs that year, including 50 kilograms of heroin. One expert, however, believes that the true number of drug-related crimes -- and drug addicts -- is actually much higher. Citing his own statistical analysis, Mazahir Effendiyev, chief of the United Nations Development Program Law Enforcement Unit in Baku, puts the real number of addicts in Baku at "not less than 300,000." ... Climate change, national security, and energy are inter-connected through our persistent and growing dependence on fossil fuels. We must address all three. This post originally appeared in the Huffington Post . After a brutal summer of volatile fuel prices and hyper-partisan politics, Congress’s latest attempt at cogent energy policy came up frustratingly short. In the end, the Senate “gang of 20” effort stalled , and the House passed a “ compromise ” package primarily intended to ease pain at the pump by adding supplies and reducing the price of energy. Unfortunately, what’s really being compromised is the chance to address both energy and climate security threats by investing in the U.S. economy. The United States—and the world—face a perfect storm of global challenges that build on one another: energy, the environment, and security. Soaring global demand for fossil fuels has sent prices to unprecedented levels. Not only gasoline , but also coal and natural gas cost 40 percent or more than they did last year. Soaring global use of fossil fuels has also accelerated global warming, which is now changing our planet faster than anyone expected. And, as a spate of solemn reports by defense Experts has detailed, the global fossil fuel Addiction and climate change pose serious consequences for geo-political stability, as countries will increasingly compete for dwindling fuel, heat, electricity, food and fresh water supplies.
