Indian venture capital scene is heating up, and total amount of Deals has risen 120 percent in second quarter of 2008, compared to the year-ago quarter, according to data from Dow Jones ( NYSE: NWS ) VentureSource. India attracted $238 million in venture investment with 17 Deals closed in the second quarter, a 120 percent increase over the $108 million invested in 12 Deals during the same period in 2007. Out of that, $89 million--nearly 37 percent of the region's quarterly investment total-went to five advertising/marketing companies, more than any other sector. That is a bit misleading, though: the jump was because of a $70 million second-round investment in Laqshya Media, a Mumbai-based provider of out-of-home media advertising services, the second-largest deal ever completed in India. "This highlights two growing trends within the region—one being a growing interest in advertising plays that capitalize on India's emerging infrastructure and growing Internet usage; the other being an increase in second-round Deals , which is expected as VCs are helping their portfolio companies expand and steering them toward liquidity," said Jessica Canning, Director of Global Research for Dow Jones VentureSource. The data showed that India saw seven second-round Deals completed inQ2, a record $161 million and exceeding the $118 million that was invested in second rounds in all of 2007. Ten seed and first round Deals were also completed during ...

National Lampoon's acquisition binge continues, as the comedy site has bought photo sharing site ZingFu.com . Terms were not disclosed. ZingFu lets users place "funny" scenes and thought-bubbles—or "zings," as the site calls them—on their photos and turn them into widgets. The site has been around for three years. National Lampoon, which bought AllModelZone.com last month following a string of three other purchases, believes that ZingFu can serve as a tool to attract more Ad dollars, especially for those interested in creating more viral types of campaigns. Most importantly, National Lampoon CEO Daniel Laikin says ZingFu has an existing user base that is in the millions, which the comedy site hopes to draw in as well. Nearly nine months after Sean Finnegan left Omnicom as CEO of its in-house interactive shop, OMG Digital, for in-text advertising start-up Vibrant Media, the media buying exec has been named president and chief digital officer of Publicis Groupe's Starcom MediaVest Group. He takes the post on Oct. 1. In a statement, SMG CEO Laura Desmond chose Finnegan to replace Curt Hecht in the role, after he was moved over to serve as president of VivaKi, Publicis' new "open source" Ad network. A 15-year media vet, Finnegan began his career as a print planner at Omnicom's BBDO New York. He then shifted his focus to the internet and new media, working at several interactive agencies including TribalDDB, and was also CMO for Vibrant. Joost , the once-hyped online video startup which was a non-starter with a desktop-only client, is now killing it, Om reports . It will go browser only, and will release a small plugin that would embed itself in the browser and allow you to grab files using the P2P technologies that was the underlying technology for its high-res video service. Even a plugin will be an inhibiting factor in the takeup of the service. But is it too late for the company? It recently expanded into China with its monitory investor Tom. We are hearing from sources that the firm has closed its new round of funding in the last couple of months, though there has been skepticism about the firm's future prospects. With competition intense—YouTube, Hulu, Amazon ( NSDQ: AMZN ), Fancast..you name it --and online Ad market not being stellar, acquisition of the company on the cheap side seems to be the only viable medium to long term option… Related Joost Expands Into China With Minority Investor Tom Joost Denies: No "Major Retrenchement", Or "Sole U.S. Focus" Social Media Deals Report: This 199-page report, filled with charts and data, examines the categories, number and size of VC and M&A deal in social media from 2007 through 2008. Online Ad net Traffic Marketplace has acquired Livemarkets , a company that lets individuals strike up chat sessions with marketers within banner ads. Terms were not disclosed. The basic proposition behind Livemarkets, which was founded last year, is that consumers will click on an Ad to chat with a customer service rep about the product featured in a banner. In one example on the company's site, a consumer might click on a banner Ad for a car to ask about a test drive. The "click-to-chat" function can work within any Ad unit, Livemarkets says. As for Los Angeles-based Traffic Marketplace, the company bills itself as a "business-to-audience" Ad net. It claims 30 billion Ad impressions every month, delivering more than 20 million leads through its targeted display ads. Lookery , a company that trolls demographic data on social net users and sells it to Ad networks, has raised $2.25 million, Venturebeat reports . It says Lookery has already raised $1 million in angel funding. Since initially starting as banner Ad network for third party apps on sites like Facebook and MySpace, the company has morphed into an aggregator of demographic data. In addition to giving sites a tool that records the users demo information based on their activity, Lookery also buys data from other companies. Also, it doesn't operate directly on Facebook, because the social net doesn't allow third party Ad networks to target ads using its users' information. Instead, Lookery imports the data it gathers outside of that site to serve ads inside Facebook. NebuAds, its business model in shambles following Congressional scrutiny of its Deals with ISP broadband providers like Charter Communications ( NSDQ: CHTR ), has lost its CEO, Bob Dykes, to payment services company VeriFone. Dykes begins the new job effective immediately. Since Dykes was at the helm of NebuAd, San Jose, CA.-based VeriFone's release can easily skip over his tenure there and focus on his two-year stint as EVP, Business Operations and CFO of Juniper Networks and prior executive roles at Flextronics International and Symantec. -- GigaOm : Since cable companies have been running away from NebuAd this summer when the Congressional hearings began, the company says it plans to pursure "more conventional media channels and means." In the meantime, NebuAd's current president, Kira Makagon, who has been overseeing its Ad systems and media revenue, has been tapped to succeed Dykes as CEO. Having endured continued Congressional scrutiny, the loss of potential clients and the sudden departure of its CEO, NebuAd has decided to call "time out" on its Ad targeting plans, WaPo reports . With Congress still trying to figure out what to do about privacy issues related to behavioral targeting, a NebuAd rep tells WaPo that it will hold off on the further roll-out of its system, which is designed to serve ads directly to ISP broadband subscribers. The plan is to wait and see what sort of rules Congress comes up with regarding the practice of targeted ads. NebuAd was summoned before Congress this summer following complaints from privacy advocates and consumers over Ad targeting tests it ran with Charter Communications ( NSDQ: CHTR ). The cable company quickly dropped plans to place behavioral ads on web pages that were accessed by its broadband service subscribers. After that, other clients began canceling their tests. So NebuAd, which raised roughly $30 million in little over a year, felt it had little choice than to put things on hold. That said, Redwood, CA.-based NebuAd says it remains committed to pursuing the targeting through ISPs.  Related Industry Moves: NebuAds' Dykes Out As CEO, Joins Verifone As CFO Broadband ISPs Shy Away From Ad Targeting, Frustrating Targeters Charter Has Second Thoughts On Targeted Ads Directed At Broadband Subscribers Behavioral Advertiser NebuAd Hits $30 Million in Funding Social Media Deals R ...

Afrigator , a multimedia meme tracking site aggregating African blogs, podcasts and video, has been acquired by South African conglomerate MIH Group/Naspers . We gave Afrigator a positive review nine months ago and CNN's Business 2.0 called it one of 31 companies to watch outside the US last year. (Warning: Insipid, traditional media, Ad-ridden "slide show" behind that CNN link.) The Afrigator interface, algorithm and user experience were key in driving the kind of growth that made it an interesting acquisition target. We haven't been able to get any details on the record about the price paid but suffice it to say that Afrigator's founders and angel investors have all been well rewarded. First coverage of the deal came from Africa tech 2.0 watcher Charl Norman , who puts Afrigator's acquisition in context with other recent Deals in the region. If you're unfamiliar with the blogging scene in Africa, Afrigator is a good place to discover top blogs there like The Mail & Guardian's Thought Leader , the occasionally prurient tech blog iMod , the very politicized Black Looks and the internationally minded Afromusing . We'd like to offer our congratulations to the Afrigator team and to the African blogosphere, whose work has been recognized by a large traditional company as important enough to warrant a significant acquisition in that space. Such recognition isn't the most important thing in the world, the social media world has plenty o ...
