Actually, J Street knows. The pro-peace/pro-Israel/pro-Palestine Jewish lobby just released a monster of a poll on American Jewish political attitudes. The takeaway: we're liberal as hell; we hate Bush; we know Bush has been a disaster for Israel; we'll support any peace deal the Israelis make; and the only thing we're uncomfortable with to that end is giving East Jerusalem back to the Palestinians. Let's go down the line. Seventy-four percent of us view Bush unfavorably and 83 percent of us disapprove of his job performance. While 76 percent of the country as a whole says the U.S. is on the wrong track, an astonishing 90 percent of American Jews say the same. Only 21 percent of us approve of the Iraq war and only 29 percent think Bush is good for Israel, and those are clearly the shmucks that kissed ass in Hebrew school and snitched when the rest of us used the synagogue phone booth and cloakroom to make out.   ...

The Glen Ellyn Park District’s plans for an 89,000-square-foot indoor sports facility at Ackerman Park likely won’t see any opposition from village officials. The project calls for features that go beyond what is typically allowed by Glen Ellyn zoning regulations; and village trustees would need to sign off on the variations. Among them: The 22 new parking spots would not be broken up by concrete islands as normally required; and the building, measured from ground level, would be six feet taller than allowed in such conservation recreation zones. The facility also would have a sign in front that would be larger than permitted by village ordinances. The Village Board reviewed the proposed variations during a workshop Monday, and although board members did not vote on them, there was no apparent opposition, either. Trustees are scheduled to take action on the measures Monday, July 28. Funds for the sports facility were approved in a village referendum in 2006. The building would include three full-size basketball courts and an indoor batting cage. Park District officials have yet to award a construction contract, so the exact cost is not certain, said District Executive Director Cory Atwell. Construction is planned to last 14 to 16 months; and officials hope to begin construction in November. But the project is not without its obstacles. Before the Park District can move forward with construction, it has to address two past wetland ...

Stop calling Rep. Gary Ackerman a Queens Democrat. The 20-year resident of Jamaica Estates has sold his house after waiting months for a buyer, for just over $1 million, less than the $1.3 million he’d asked, he said. Ackerman bought a condo in Roslyn Heights about 9 miles away for $950,000 in December, records show. He said he and his wife wanted to downsize. “Rita was alone most of the week in a big old English Tudor,” said the 12th-term Democrat, who occupies a houseboat on the Potomac River when in Washington. “It was just too much house.” Ackerman stayed in his district, which runs from northeast Queens to Roslyn. Over on the Washington Independent, Spencer Ackerman writes a piece about what Sergio Vieira de Mello meant to the UN system . It's a great piece. Definitely worth a read . Vieira de Mello represented a transformation toward a more activist U.N. diplomat -- one more comfortable settling disputes and tending to humanitarian crises in combat zones than smoothing over hurt feelings at U.N. headquarters in New York. "He never got muddy, despite wading in the mud so frequently," said [ friend of UN Dispatch James] Traub , meaning that both literally and figuratively. While Vieira de Mello might have been the best of that trail-blazing generation, he most certainly is not the last. Among the places that generation is proving its mettle is, ironically, the country where Vieira gave his life: Iraq. Right now, the Swedish diplomat Steffan de Mistura has thrown himself into the thick of Iraq's toughest problems. I'd also be remiss not to mention Lakdhar Brahimi, who served briefly as Algeria's Foreign Minister in the early 1990s, became a career UN official heading missions in Haiti and South Africa in the early to mid 1990s. He's most known, though, for three things: 1) He's the namesake of the "2000 Brahimi Report" on how to restore UN peacekeeping after its failures in Bosnia and Rwanda. This report is hugely influential and paved the way for UN's peacekeeping more recent successes in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Cote D'Ivoire. 2) He was also the ...

by Jason Leopold Three weeks ago, Rep. Gary Ackerman, the Democrat from New York, delivered an impassioned speech on the House floor defending a controversial resolution he co-sponsored calling on President George W. Bush “to increase economic, political and diplomatic pressure on Iran.” Since May, when the resolution was introduced, 247 members of Congress have signed on as co-sponsors, including numerous Democrats who are staunch critics of the Bush administration’s prewar Iraq intelligence. Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., introduced a companion resolution in the Senate on June 2 that is also on the fast track toward approval. The non-binding resolution, H. Con. Res 362, was introduced just days before the annual American Israel Public Affairs policy meeting in which Iran was the main topic. AIPAC has lobbied Congress heavily to implement sanctions against Iran in language nearly identical to the provisions outlined in Ackerman’s House resolution. Progressive activists and policy analysts have criticized Ackerman and many of his Democratic colleagues claiming they have adopted a hawkish stance against Tehran due in large part to pressure from AIPAC. Carah Ong, the Iran policy analyst at the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, said in an interview that Congressional Democrats want to prove they are tough on national security and are using Iran as their “scapegoat.” “Democrats are talking tougher on Iran because they perceive i ...
