For the last year or so I've developed a bump on my Achilles tendon. It is directly behind the mallelous (i.e. about 3.5 inches from the bottom of my heel.) I've done a lot of research and it seems to be tendonitis or tendonosis. It isn't overly painful and I don't notice it much when running. In the morning or after sitting for an hour or so, my heel tightens up and for a minute or two I hobble around until it warms up again. I sometimes notice that it aches in the middle of the night,but never more than a 1 or 2 on a 10 scale of discomfort. I've tried running with it, and taking time off from running(up to one month) and it doesn't change much. I'm concerned it's leading to a potential rupture of my Achilles (ie. that it may be a weak spot.) I've tried exercising (heel or calf lifts), I've used a pad under my heel to increase it's height. I've been running for almost 30 years...around 20-25 miles per week most of my life. Is this going to be permanent and go against my mantra that all running injuries eventually heal? Samantha McGlone, last year's women's runner-up at the Ford Ironman World Championship, won't compete in the race in 2008. The cause: an Achilles tendon injury. In an article , McGlone explains: "I've had problems with the Achilles on and off for the past 18 months," McGlone said today. "But I was able to manage it and race on it, and it seemed to be getting better in the spring, but it came back when I upped my mileage this summer and just became insurmountable. I couldn't do any running at all. I tried all kinds of rehab and it hasn't healed enough to do a marathon on it, so I'm going to have to miss Kona this year." Asked when and how she made the final decision to pull out of the world championship, McGlone, a 2004 Olympian, replied, "I don't know if I ever really made the decision. It decided for me. It was pretty clear. When the race is three weeks out and you can't run for 20 minutes, it's pretty obvious what you have to do." Losing access to your GMail account is tantamount to banishment from the internet, but Google's non-existent customer support makes it nearly impossible for rightful owners to regain control of their accounts. The New York Times asked Google why they couldn't afford to offer phone-based customer support, a simple question Google needed three people to answer. Mr. Glotzbach began by saying that “one-to-one support isn’t always the best answer” because it would take Google too long to collect lots of data about a problem that is affecting many users simultaneously. For systemic problems, data collection is important. But not for other categories. Account recovery could be slow for a locked-out customer who doesn’t have a backup e-mail account, and who declined to provide a security question and answer because of concerns that someone else could use it to get in (which is what someone did to Gov. Sarah Palin’s Yahoo Mail account). Mr. Badros argued that Google asks so little personal information of a new Gmail customer that it’s hard to determine identity when the genuine user and the impostor both present themselves to claim the account, and neither can produce the verification. He said more information could be asked of users when they sign up, but the inconvenience would dissuade them from trying the service.
