Abortion is a moral issue, felt deeply on all sides of the debate. That debate has also been deeply divisive, becoming a "third rail" of American politics. It often influences outcomes of elections, and therefore the direction of the country in other important policy areas. Consistent polling shows that most are between the polarized extremes, simplistically named "pro-life" and "pro-choice." A majority is both concerned, even alarmed, about the Abortion Rate in America, yet is hesitant to criminalize it. We have sorely needed new common ground that focuses on reducing the need for and number of abortions. Such common ground could be supported by both sides and affirmed by many in the middle. This past weekend, the Democratic Party's 2008 platform language was approved. Many have been waiting to see their language about Abortion for this election season. The 1996 and 2000 Democratic platforms contained a clause that read, "The Democratic Party is a party of inclusion. We respect the individual conscience of each American on this difficult issue, and we welcome all our members to participate at every level of our party." The draft language of the 2008 platform builds on that clause by supporting two choices that a woman might make--both of which the Democratic Party "strongly supports." First, the platform states that the Democratic Party "strongly and unequivocally supports Roe vs. Wade and a woman's right to choose a safe and le ...

I've been reading through the extensive comments on my blog post  on Abortion reduction and the Democratic Platform. As usual, the comments span the spectrum. But I found it puzzling that those who are so adamantly against the Democrats on Abortion (as I have also been) seem so satisfied with the Republicans just repeating that Abortion should be illegal, while the Abortion Rate never changes, even under Republican rule. The Republican position often feels cynical to me -- privately admitting that a total ban on Abortion in America will never happen, but using it every four years to get the votes of people who genuinely care about saving unborn lives (as I do). I would encourage those critics to listen to the comments of Doug Kmiec, a Republican judicial appointee of Ronald Reagan, a Catholic intellectual, and Chair & Professor of Law at Pepperdine University, who cares deeply about Abortion but now thinks the Democrats have a good chance to reduce the Abortion Rate. During a conference call that Sojourners hosted this week with evangelical and Catholic leaders, Doug said, "What this does is commit the Democratic Party to supply real support for the child and for the woman facing this question in terms of pre- and post-natal healthcare, in terms of income support, the kind of support like paternity leave, family leave and an improvement in the accessibility in adoption. These are tangible things and very much related to Catholic socia ...

HERE'S MORE ON OBAMA AND Abortion: An interesting question that could be asked of Obama is this -- since black women get abortions at triple the Rate of white women (according to this CDC study), is that troubling? Or just an example of freedom producing different results for different people? I actually pretty much agreed with Obama's view on Abortion -- to the extent that he articulated anything in particular -- but this seems like it would be an interesting question to have answered. ...

clipped by: sillysam Clip Source: townhall.com Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 8:58 AM I received an email this morning to tell me we missed Obama's biggest Saddleback gaffe. Remember when Obama was talking about Abortion and said, "Although we've had a president who is opposed to abortions over the last eight years, abortions have not gone down" ? My emailer passes on this 2008 article from U.S. News and World Report showing abortions have decreased dramatically under George Bush's tenure. The title of it is "U.S. Abortion Rate Falls to Lowest Level in Decades." "So yes, Obama is either stunningly uninformed on one of American politics’ most volatile issues, or he outright lied to a pastor on national television (not to mention the American people) as he gave lip service to a known left wing myth," my friend writes. ...

Saddleback Bloopers August 18, 2008 Obama makes misleading claims about ethics legislation and Abortion at a church-sponsored forum. McCain exaggerates his tax-cut proposals. *Summary* At a nationally televised forum at a mega-church in Southern California, we found these misrepresentations: * Obama claimed that "I worked with John McCain" on ethics legislation. In fact, the two worked together for barely a week, after which McCain accused Obama of "partisan posturing" and added, "I won't make the same mistake again." McCain later voted against the ethics bill that Obama supported, stating that it was written by Democrats with "no input" from Republicans. * Obama wrongly claimed that abortions "have not gone down" under President Bush. In fact, the Abortion Rate has gone down 9 percent, and the annual total has declined by more than 100,000. * McCain exaggerated the extent of his proposals to cut taxes. He incorrectly claimed he would give a "tax credit" of $7,000 per child, which would be seven times as high as the current credit. His actual proposal would gradually increase the current $3,500 exemption, which benefits high-bracket taxpayers most. *Analysis* Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain appeared one after the other Aug. 16 at the “Saddleback Civil Forum on the Presidency” at Pastor Rick Warren's Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif. The event was televised nationally on CNN and Fox News. Twisted Ethics History Obama offered ...

There seems to be some confusion about the reproductive rights section of the proposed Democratic Party platform. Some pro-life Democrats are claiming credit for the language on adoption and on supporting pregnant women who choose to carry to term. But before we all hail Jim Wallis and friends as supposed platform authors (they weren't), folks should realize that pro- choice advocates have been experimenting with language like this for years. In 2006, Jessica Arons , director of the women's health and rights program at the pro-choice (and very influential) Center for American Progress, authored a report called " More Than a Choice ." Arons also heads a working group of grassroots and Washington, D.C.-based reproductive health professionals who discuss a range of topics, including how to better frame and discuss Abortion rights. In any case, Arons' report, just like the proposed 2008 platform, situates Abortion rights alongside the right to parent, and discusses ways government can better support low-income expectant moms. Like the platform, the report discusses adoption not as a means of reducing the Abortion Rate, but as another reproductive right to which both pregnant women and adoptive parents should have full access. A progressive reproductive rights platform must, Arons writes, "embrac[e] equally the rights to have or not have children." This kind of thinking, in which the terms of the reproductive rights debate are broaden ...
