Scott's Investments submits: AU Optronics (AUO), a manufacturer of flat panel displays, continues to slide in a tough consumer environment. Thursday the stock hit a new 52 week low of $11.25 and closed at $11.30. The company's products are used in computer products, such as notebook computers and desktop monitors; consumer electronics products, such as digital cameras, digital camcorder, car television, car navigation systems and portable digital versatile disc [DVD] players; liquid crystal display [LCD] televisions, and industrial displays. This makes the company highly sensitive to changes in consumer spending and the economy as a whole. In early July the company reported a sharp drop in June sales (down 17.2% sequentially from May). In addition, the company's 2nd quarter revenues, while up sequentially for the same period in 2007, dropped from the 1st quarter by 9.6%. In addition, the company beat 2nd quarter earnings estimates by $.27 ($.84 versus $.57). However, the company's June drop in sales, general macro economic conditions, and the company's saying it may shut production lines and cut capital spending this year because of lower-than-expected demand for LCD monitors and TVs has put immense pressure on the company's shares. According to industry sources, Nokia has made OLED production one of the mandatory conditions for its selection of panel suppliers as it expects the technology to play a major role in the future of mobile phone handsets. Although currently Nokia only uses OLED displays in three of its high end phones and in no other models, they see the technology as the future and need their panel suppliers to have development and production plans for OLED panels. AU Optronics (AUO) and TPO Display , two current panel suppliers for Nokia also noted that they are beginning development of OLED displays. AUO had shut down its OLED line two years ago facing high production costs but costs have dropped and the chance of losing Nokia as a client will now have the manufacturer reopening the line. Samsung SDI and Chi Mei EL Corporation (CMEL) are the current major suppliers of small-sized OLED panels with the highest volume of sales. Permalink | Comments ...

Eric Savitz (Barron's) submits: There are new signs of weakness in the flat-panel TV business. AU Optronics (AUO) shares are down sharply Tuesday after the Taiwan-based maker of LCD panels reported a sharp drop in June sales : on a consolidated basis sales in the month were 36.7 billion New Taiwan dollars, down 17.2% sequentially from May. The company said that “weaker than expected” June sales reflected “the cautious inventory control for semi-annual results by customers as well as the anticipation of uncertain seasonal demand under [the] current macro environment.” The company said shipments of large-sized panels for desktop monitors, notebooks, LCD TVs and other applications were down 12.9% sequentially. Smaller panels were down 2.7% sequentially. Complete Story » ...

Eric Savitz (Barron's) submits: Shares of glass maker Corning (GLW) and LCD panel producers AU Optronics (AUO) and LG Display (LPL) are all down sharply today amid a new wave of market jitters on the prospects for the flat-panel display market. Several recent Street research reports note that conditions in the LCD panel sector have been difficult for much of the third quarter, raising questions about the companies’ ability to hit current Street estimates. Brian White, an analyst with Collins Stewart , noted in a round-up piece on the electronics supply chain today that he visited last week with three leading Taiwan-based LCD panel makers, and came away with a “reinforced” cautious stance on AU Optronics, which he rates Hold. He said the trip also provided “incremental concerns regarding our near-term financial estimates” on Corning. “Based on our visits, we believe LCD panel pricing at the Taiwan players has been worse than expected thus far in the September quarter with PC monitors experiencing the most pricing pressure,” he writes. White does say that the rate of price declines began to slow during the second-half of August, and that the worse may be over for the near-term. Complete Story » ...
