A few years back, John Malcolm, the Motion Picture Association of America's anti-piracy director, was brainstorming new ways to combat piracy. Fresh on the job after serving as a federal prosecutor and a Justice Department attorney, Malcolm wanted to expand the group's efforts beyond public relations campaigns and federal lawsuits. That's when it occurred to him: Why not enlist man's best friend in the war on piracy? Renowned dog trainer, Nial Powell, trained Lucky and Flo, the world's first dogs to decipher the smell of polycarbonates used in DVDs. The dogs have discovered  millions of pirated discs worldwide, and have been responsible for the arrests of dozens of people. Photo: Courtesy of MPAA "I spent a lot of my career as a prosecutor. I had worked with Agents, the DEA, the ATF. I was familiar with dogs that sniffed out drugs and bombs and cadaver dogs," Malcolm said. "I knew dogs were remarkably talented, that they could sniff out all kinds of things. Dogs have a sense of smell that is roughly 40 times that of a human being." Fast-forward to today. Malcolm's late-2004 vision has become reality, and the movie industry's specially trained dogs, Lucky and Flo, are ferreting out counterfeit DVDs in piracy hotspots around the globe. Trained to sniff out the polycarbonate used in DVDs, the two black Labrador retrievers have recovered millions of pirated discs, and collared dozens of counterfeiters in the United States, the Czech R ...

Opening day at the Arkansas Olympics . . . Doves released during opening ceremonies are promptly shot by the crowd and sold as concession snacks. Little Rock's most famous strip club, "Peek-a-Boo Street", forced to change its name. The Big Event? The 100m Sisterchase. No snow + No ice = Skiing through 10 inches of grits and skating on fresh bacon fat. Instead of shooting at boring targets, biathletes take aim at muskrats and ATF Agents. Olympic officials attempt to pass off LeAnn Rimes' frantic yodeling as a medley of all the different national anthems, "includin' all them new Russian ones!" Metal detectors replaced with ringworm detectors. Teary-eyed awe of seeing Olympic Flame burn is replaced by teary-eyed *hyucks* of seeing Vern light his own gas. Urine drug test magically transformed into "Distance Pissing Competition. " Olympic Village replaced with Olympic Trailer Park. DHS-ICE: A case of pre-selection and more misuse of federal funds This report is about misusing of federal fund spending and prohibited federal personnel practices, to-wit: pre-selection by ICE. Summary This story will show how millions of dollars of U.S. tax payers’ monies are being wasted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in their war against terrorism and “dangerous people” (illegal aliens). I will demonstrate how DHS and ICE are duplicating other federal law enforcement agencies’ efforts against drug and arms traffickers and smugglers, such as ATF’s PROJECT GUNRUNNER, and ICE’s OPERATION ARMAS CRUZADAS. I will also demonstrate how ICE may be violating Title 5 of the United States Code by the pre-selection of Alonzo Pena to be the first and new DHS Attaché at Mexico City. The U.S. Congress and the Bush Administration are funding two federal enforcement initiatives, which are being conducted by two different federal law enforcement agencies with basically the same ultimate enforcement goals and objectives. ICE’s top priorities since its creation in 2003, have been illegal alien enforcement operations to include conducting numerous employment raids, such as the one conducted at a southwest Ohio poultry plant by utilizing some 300 ICE Agents and supported in the raid by Butler County, Fairfield and West Chester police. The catch: 160 suspected illegal aliens arreste ...

I have not been able to find a news reference on line for this yet, not even AP seems to have it, but I can tell you what I heard on the car radio moments ago. A group of documentary film makers who have previously documented police abuse of demonstrators in other cities has just arrived in Saint Paul. The Saint Paul Police found them, harassed them, and took away their cameras and other equipment. The only thing we know so far is what the film makers are claiming. The police agree that something happened but say that their version is different. I believe the police are also saying that they acted in accordance with Patriot Act law. There really is going to be something entirely different going on in St. Paul than has been going on in Denver, where Police Outnumber Protesters At DNC . ... on Sunday, organizers of the No More Occupation march -- with a permit for as many as 25,000 people -- drew a crowd of 1,000. A march later that day was expected to draw 20,000 people. About 40 showed up. I think people just are not that mad at the Democrats. I heard a story, on NPR, about a protest planned for the US Mint in Denver. The reporter giving the story went with dozens of other reporters to cover it. He found machine gun nests established on the high ground, snipers on nearby roofs, ATF and other federal Agents everywhere, some armored vehicles, etc. Then the protesters came. It was two guys. Two. One was dressed as a wizard. The wizar ...

Federal authorities discovered explosives at about 10 a.m. Tuesday after searching a farm northwest of Wolbach. The property owner, Al Klanecky, 58, was arrested at about the same time in Kansas. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) arrested Klanecky in Pratt, Kan., on probable cause of illegal possession and manufacture of explosives, said Michael Schmitz, a special agent for the ATF Kansas City division. The ATF executed a federal search warrant at Klanecky's property, 50401 Horseshoe Road, and found at least one completed explosive device and supplies to make other devices. "That's all it takes," Schmitz said. "If you're in possession of explosive-making material, it counts." Schmitz said federal authorities had been monitoring Klanecky for about three months. The Howard County Sheriff's Department assisted ATF Agents, the Nebraska state fire marshal's office and the Nebraska State Patrol and its SWAT team in the search, Schmitz said. In all, Schmitz said about 60 federal, state and county officials were involved in the operation. The ATF office in Omaha is under the Kansas City division and conducted the search. Certified explosive specialists, explosive enforcement officers and two explosive detection canines were present at Klanecky's farm. A special response team with Agents from a variety of surrounding areas made up ATF's team, Schmitz said. Klanecky's parents live in another house on the property ...

A South Main Street resident, charged with dealing in firearms without a license, is expected to appear today in U.S. District Court in Buffalo. Robert Merrick, 76, of 395 S. Main St., was arrested without incident on the federal firearms charge at about 7:30 a.m. today after Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Agents executed a search warrant at his residence. “He’ll be transported today for an initial appearance (arraignment),” said David P. De Joe, ATF resident agent in charge. “It’s a federal warrant from the Western Judicial District of New York.” De Joe said the investigation began about six months ago. He said Agents would be searching Merrick’s house and vehicle. “We haven’t even started the search yet,” De Joe said at about 8:20 a.m. today. “There’s quite a quantity of firearms. I’m not even going to hazard a guess (as to how many weapons there are) — a lot.” De Joe did not elaborate on the specific weapons Merrick has allegedly been illegally dealing. “The execution of the warrant was assisted by the Wellsville Police Department and the New York State Police,” De Joe said, crediting Wellsville Lt. Timothy Walsh and Officer Mark Bierman for their assistance. De Joe said the judge at Merrick’s initial appearance will only be able to accept an innocent plea. “He (Merrick) might make bond, he might be held and detained,” De Joe said. “That’s up to the judge.” ...

A Nebraska man was arrested in Pratt Tuesday in connection with a search warrant for explosives and destructive devices at his Nebraska residence. Al Klanecky, 58 of Wolbach, Neb. was arrested in Pratt shortly before the warrant was executed at his residence in Wolbach, said Jeff Fulton, assistant special agent in charge for ATF in Nebraska. Klanecky has been under surveillance for three months. He travels as part of the business responsibilities and that is the speculation why he was in Pratt. It is unknown if he had any other connections to Pratt. “I don’t think he even knows anyone in your town,” Fulton said. Initially he was detained for safety and was then arrested. ATF Agents, Nebraska State Patrol, local sheriff’s officers and the Nebraska State Fire Marshall’s office conducted the raid. Seized in the raid were explosive materials and evidence of manufacture of destructive devices, Fulton said.   The Grand Island Independent said federal Agents found grenades, fuses and a gunpowder substitute in their search. Klanecky was under surveillance and his location was known to the ATF. Agents from Wichita ATF made the arrest in Pratt sometime Tuesday. Klanecky was arrested and made an appearance in federal court in Wichita Wednesday where he was charged with federal explosives violations, Fulton said. was released and will make his next appearance in Nebraska Federal Court. Malfunctioning gun sends veteran to prison Jeff Johnson - OneNewsNow - 7/26/2008 4:20:00 A pro-Second Amendment group is taking the unusual step of asking for financial help for the family of a gun owner caught up in a bizarre prosecution for a malfunctioning firearm. David Olofson is a U.S. Army veteran, Army Reservist and a gun enthusiast who loaned his personal 20-year-old AR-15 semi-automatic rifle to a neighbor who had expressed an interest in learning to shoot. A semi-automatic weapon fires one bullet each time the trigger is pulled. But – as Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America, explains – when the neighbor took the gun to a range, it malfunctioned, firing several rounds with one trigger pull and then jamming. "Now that, by normal people's thinking is a malfunction. A gun that jams, even after it's fired a small burst, is hardly a controllable firearm. That's a gun that needs fixing," he explains. "But according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATF), that is a machine gun -- and they got a jury to buy that." Olofson was sentenced to 30 months in jail for "transferring a machine gun" to his neighbor. But Pratt says the government got that conviction based on what it did not tell the jury, not based on the facts of the case. "They didn't tell the jury that their witness, the fellow who had borrowed the gun, had been paid repeatedly by the federal government," says Pratt. "They d ...

Around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Butler County Sheriff's Department got a call about some explosives near Andover. “We got a call from an individual who felt that he had found some military grade explosives in a storage down there in the Andover Store All just east of Andover,” Sheriff Craig Murphy said. Andover Police Department and sheriff's officers responded to the call to see what was found. “We called the Wichita Bomb Squad and also federal ATF (Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms) Agents,” Murphy said. The McConnell Air Force Base Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit also responded. “What they found was a multitude of military grade ordinance and explosives,” he said. They also found some dynamite, which they thought might be leaking and some ordinance shells that might be unstable. The items were found after the individual who had rented the storage unit hadn't paid for it in quite some time. “After a certain length of time, they will auction off the stuff in the storage shed to recoup their money,” Murphy said. That was when it was found. “An individual had bought this stuff in the storage shed and he was in the process of cleaning it out and ran across this stuff, which belonged to the original renter of the shed,” Murphy said. Officials are still looking into from where the explosives came. As a precaution, the Andover Fire Department and EMS were on standby. “We finally wrapped that thing up sometime around midnight last night,” Mu ...

At least two people were arrested Wednesday as federal Agents served search warrants during a crackdown at chapters of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club across northern Illinois. Two heavily armed SWAT teams patrolled Division Street outside a building where the banner of the Chicago chapter of the Outlaws — red and black with a sinister-looking skull — was draped. A sign on the door also said the club met there. In Kankakee, about 60 miles south of Chicago, an FBI plane circled overhead Wednesday as armed Agents stormed the South Washington Avenue headquarters of the Outlaws, The (Kankakee) Daily Journal reported. Kankakee police blocked the street and SWAT team members ordered a food pantry next door to lock its doors and keep patrons inside during the raid, pantry officials said. At least two men were taken away in handcuffs from the Outlaws building, the paper reported. Officials declined to say exactly what they were looking for in the numerous searches which according to FBI spokesman Frank Bochte took place over an area stretching from Kankakee to Elgin and suburban Cook County. The raids were staged jointly by the FBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, ATF spokesman Tom Ahern said. Two people were arrested, he said. Ahern declined to give names or specify the charges but did indicate that additional information would become available Thursday when the two are due to appear before a federal magistrate judge ...

9/5/08 - Federal charges have been dropped against the owners of a Highland Township gun store. The Gun Barn on M-59 had been raided by federal Agents on August 14th and closed down. It was learned that Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives executed a federal search warrant on the Gun Barn and seized all of the store’s guns while arresting two Highland residents, Gabriel Kish and Debbie Summers. They were charged with selling firearms without a license in US District Court in Detroit and were scheduled to appear at an exam this week. However, US Attorney Robert Haviland tells WHMI that charges against the pair “have been dismissed pending further investigation”. ATF agent Robin Shoemaker says a yearlong investigation found the pair allegedly sold firearms even though the store's federal license was revoked in 2004 for rule violations. A second store in Genesee County’s Otisville was also raided. (JM) ...
