When AOL announced in March that it would acquire social-networking service Bebo for $850 million, there was a collective gasp from those watching the company. At the time, news headlines bluntly suggested that the flailing corporation could be spun off into parts ( Variety : "AOL Seeks Reinvention") or suggested a Yahoo-AOL joint venture. While social media sites are all the rage (just last week, LinkedIn valued itself at $1 billion), no one expected AOL to gobble up the third-largest social networking service in the U.S., which trails only MySpace and Facebook. An acronym of the phrase "Blog early, blog often," Bebo was founded in 2005 by a San Francisco-based husband and wife team, Michael and Xochi Birch. The site remains more popular in Europe than in America, but as analysts saw it, AOL was wise to focus on a younger audience (and to acquire a venue that might bring in substantial advertising dollars). Anthony Valencia, an analyst for TCW Group in Los Angeles, told the Los Angeles Times that "AOL was in danger of becoming your father's Oldsmobile. This acquisition is designed to prevent that." But how would Bebo fit into AOL's larger strategy? Flock 1.2 beta add support for Digg, Pownce and AOL Mail The developers behind the Flock browser project have released the beta edition of upcoming Flock 1.2. This latest beta adds support for more web services including Digg, Pownce and AOL Mail. Flock already supports Twitter and tons of other social networking services. Flock, the social web browser built from Firefox code keeps getting more social. Flock 1.2 beta adds Digg, Pownce, and AOL Mail integration. Once you login to Digg for the first time from the Flock browser, you'll have the option of opening up a Digg sidebar which shows you all of your Digg contacts and their recent activity. You can also click a button in the sidebar to submit any page you're currently visiting to Digg.
Micro-blogging service Pownce has also been added to the sidebar. If you have a Pownce account you can keep up with your contacts without opening a separate web page. Previous versions of Flock already supported Twitter.
Finally, the latest beta adds support for AOL Mail notifications. This isn't so much a social feature as an essential feature if you happen to use AOL as your primary web mail account. Flock already supported Yahoo! Mail and Gmail. We're not sure why AOL wasn't already in there, or why Windows Live Hotmail still isn't supported.
Like Firefox, Flock is cross-platform. There are versions of Flock 1.2 beta for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Just in case integration with Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Flickr, Blogger, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Picasa, Photobucket, Livejournal, Wordpress, Xanga, Del.icio.us, TypePad, Ma.gnolia, Piczo, and [deep breath] Blogome wasn't enough to convince you to give Flock a chance, the "social Web browser" has added support for Digg, Pownce, and AOL Mail in its latest iteration, Flock 1.2 beta.
Social bookmarking service Digg and micro-blogging app Pownce have both been added to the browser's sidebar, and support for AOL Mail notifications have been integrated into the latest version of the software.
Version 1.2 of the browser is available for download on Mac, Windows, and Linux. We might just wait until they introduce DanceJam integration, however.
