Apple Inc. and American Express Co. are in very different businesses. The former makes computers and lots of fun-looking gadgets. The latter is a credit-card issuer. But the reason behind the weakness in both companies Tuesday relates to a similar issue: expectations for consumer spending. Both companies surprised investors when they unfurled their latest results late [...] ...

I signed up for AMEX's Connoiseur promotion because they offered $100 worth of discounts at restaurants with the signup. Although they didn't say it specifically, I assumed it would be a $100 AMEX gift certificate. That was clearly my mistake to make that assumption. What wasn't my mistake, however, was the fact that what they did send was a certificate for $100 off restaurants at restaurant.com. What is misleading is that you can buy these certificates directly from restaurant.com for $16-20. So the offer itself was really worth only a maximum of $20, not $100. I admit the wording wasn't technically inaccurate - you do get $100 off at the restaurants, but you could have purchased those same $100 discounts for only $20 or less. ...

Over the past year or so, I have joined travel clubs and acquired the following credit cards: 1) BA AMEX - earns 1.5 BA miles per £1 spent (fee - £30pa). I support this with converting Tesco Clubcard points. I will trigger a second 241 voucher and will have 100,000 BA miles to use this. However, I am not sure I'll be able to build the BA miles up to this level for future years. 2) BMI MBNA M/card - earns 1.5 BMI miles per £1 spent (no annual fee). I have around 35,000 BMI miles and will probably (once I get up to speed with the redemption of BMI miles) use these for part-cash/part-miles flights. 3) Lloyds TSB Airmiles AMEX - earns 1 Airmile per £10 spent (no annual fee), ignoring the useless M/card that comes with this (useless because the earning rate is 1 Airmile per £50 spent). I don't have many Airmiles at present but this is clearly an alternative for converting Tesco Clubcard points. I don't have a feel for the relative merits of these cards (other than what I've outlined above). I don't have enough airline loyalty or can build enough points through air travel for this part to be a real factor. I try to get about £300 worth of Tesco Clubcard points per year. Are there any other things I should consider before deciding which method is better to concentrate on. Currently I use the BA AMEX where it's accepted until I hit the £10k spend for the 241. Once I've reached the £10k spend on the BA AMEX or where AMEX isn't accepted, I use ...

I recently received a letter from AMEX which said that if I opened a Gold Account, the annual fee would be waived for the 1st year and I would get 25,000 Membership Rewards points if I spent $1,000.00 by October 31,2008. It sounded good so I applied for the card, received it and am now using it. No problem. In today's mail, i received a letter from Hilton informing me that in conjunction with the AMEX Gold card, Hilton has created an account for me and, based on my use of the AMEX Gold card, I now have over 12,000 Hilton HHonors points. An added, unexpected plus. I am, however, already an Hilton HHonors member and have an account with 67,000+ points. My question for you Hilton Experts: Do I risk losing the 12,000+ points by informing Hilton of the 2nd account? Would they merge the two accounts and permit me to keep the 12,000+ points? Should I keep two separate accounts? What are the downsides of keeping two accounts? What would you do? In advance, I thank you for taking the time to answer these questions (I did a search but came up with nothing). ...

First, I want to say I just found this site and couldnt be more excited! I travel quite a bit and its a relief to have this much info on a single site. I'm hoping to get EXP status w/ AA, but I only fly around 50,000 miles a year...so i'm considering the AA Citi card, as I rack up $100k+ on my credit card. hopefully that will get me EXP status (AA Gold is useless if flying out of ORD) I'm also considering AMEX platinum, to give me access to AC and the other airline clubs as an alternative. Any suggestions? ...

I'l just fall short of the £10,000 minimum spend this year and was wondering if I could get around it by purchasing something to take me over the limit, then refund it once the voucher has been generated. Will this work or will it just mean that I'll have to spend even more to reach next year's minimum spend? ...

Marvin Clark submits: Monday evening American Express (AXP) reported a 37% drop in profits for the second quarter, the third consecutive quarter in which profits fell for the supreme credit card issuer. The second course at this summer’s secular bear market feast is now served. Enjoy. The consensus of $.86 a share was missed – by a lot. The actual number was $.58 a share, a stunning $385 million dollars off, or $.28 cents a share. Furthermore, Bloomberg reported, Kenneth Chenault, Chief Executive Office said on yesterday’s conference call , American Express is “no longer tracking” a prior forecast of 4% and until the U.S. economy improves, the company will not meet longer term targets.
