Say this much for Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang: He doesn't try to put lipstick on a pig. The chipmaker had a crappy second quarter, and Huang was pretty candid about it. The company's performance in the quarter was "disappointing" and "significantly below" original expectations, he said. Nvidia underestimated its competitors, he added. "We got tripped up," he said . For the next quarter, Huang said he expects sales to "grow slightly," which is less than what analysts were expecting. So why were shares up 11% yesterday to $12.26? Mainly because Nvidia's expanding its stock-buyback program by $1 billion. And because investors were already expecting bad news, after Nvidia warned last month it would have a rough quarter. Things could have been worse. Still, the market seems extremely forgiving for a company that has made some big miscalculations. We're talking big on the scale of defective graphics chips (which the company took a $200 million charge for in the quarter) and excess low-margin inventory it has to burn off. Margins are falling and operating expenses are too high. In other words, when competitor AMD turned up the heat a little, Nvidia got burned. Huang is hoping everyone just forgets the mess and looks ahead. "We've dusted ourselves off and we are now intensely focused on changes and improvements that will enhance our performance in the future," he said. Nvidia has some new projects underway that could pay off. Perhaps that ... Source: news.cnet.com --- 10 days ago
As it kicks off its Nvision conference Monday in San Jose, Calif., chipmaker Nvidia must be hoping that the N stands for "new" and "now"--and not "no thanks." Nvidia is trying to shake off a tough second quarter and is staring down a slump in earnings tied to chip glitches and stiffer competition from rival Advanced Micro Devices. The home page for the Nvision 08 conference urges interested parties to "join the visual revolution" and promises attendees two days' worth of "jaw-dropping visual wonderment" in the realms of games, movies, and science. The graphics chip supplier's second-quarter loss can be directly tied to a $196 million charge taken for defective graphics processors. Though Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has said that the "failures are only seen in a small percentage of all the chips," computer makers like Dell have listed a number of models affected by the glitch. Dell's site lists 15, while Hewlett-Packard cited 24 separate models last month and said the Nvidia chip defect has been an issue since November 2007. A possibly bigger challenge is AMD's resurgent ATI graphics chip unit . Huang said in the second-quarter earnings conference call that his company had "underestimated" the price and performance of AMD's latest graphics chips, leading Nvidia to "to misposition our fall lineup" of chips. The cost of good graphics is going down fast. AMD plans to release new versions of its ATI Radeon 4000-series graphics processing units (GPUs) for entry-level graphics cards, according to the site TGDaily. The new cards are a response to Nvdia's new 9400 GT, which was announced last week, and is available in graphics cards starting at $60. These entry-level cards are the first step up from systems using chipsets with integrated graphics from Intel, as well as AMD and Nvidia. The competition to offer better graphics at lower prices seems to affecting the business at all levels. In its recent quarterly call, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang admitted that the company had underestimated the price-performance of AMD's high-end Radeon 4800... ... Source: blogs.zdnet.com --- 22 days ago
Nvidia had one ugly second quarter. It lost money. It took a charge for defective chips. And it’s stuck with low-margin inventory it has to burn off. Amazing how a little price competition from AMD’s ATI can magnify poor execution at Nvidia. LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Semiconductor maker Broadcom Corp. will pay around $192.8 million in cash to acquire chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s digital TV business, the companies announced Monday. The acquisition will form the core of Broadcom's DTV business, said Daniel Marotta, head of Broadcom's broadband communications group, in a joint news release. AMD CEO Dirk Meyer said the sale is a "key step in AMD's transformation, helping to strengthen our balance sheet, lower our breakeven point, and hone our focus in order to take full advantage of our position as a leader in both microprocessors and graphics technology." The firms said around 530 members of AMD's DTV team and others would be invited to join Broadcom. Boards of both companies have approved the deal, which doesn't require shareholder approval and is expected to close during the fourth quarter, the firms said. Dean Pullen the Inquirer , Tuesday 5 August 2008. 13:58:00 No, Daamit! ACCORDING TO AMD, EVGA approached the chip firm with the possibility of selling Radeon-based graphics cards - but AMD spurned the offer from video card outift. Daamit said it only needs eight partners - and supporting more would "damage loyalty between them and itself after they've stuck by AMD through rough and the smooth". EVGA forums were awash with the rumour, prompting all sorts of denials from 'administrators' and mods. Amusingly, EVGA then responded to the story, claiming that DAAMIT had in fact approached EVGA about building Radeon cards. EVGA told Bit-tech: "AMD Channel Senior Account Manager on West Coast (of USA) had requested me to arrange a meeting with our president and CEO in April 2007, however we declined the request in lieu of our business decision." The story moves along Charlie's claim that EVGA wanted to dump Nvidia.... ... Source: albany.bizjournals.com --- 15 days ago

Ron Haruni submits: As reported on Monday by the news site tgdaily , the word is that Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) might be split into two entities — Asset Light and Asset Smart. One entity will be led by the new CEO Dirk Meyer, who will succeed Hector Ruiz as AMD’s chief executive, and the other one will focus on the development of chip technologies and a manufacturing arm that will take over AMD’s fabs. AMD currently has fabs in Dresden, Germany, and is planning another in Malta, NY. At this time, there is no official confirmation from the computer processor manufacturing company, in terms of substantiating the news. However, based on indications received from tgdaily sources, there is a strong possibility that an official announcement could be made as early as next month. Complete Story » ... Nvidia fiscal Q2 revenues were down and that’s why it lost $120.9 million, 22 cents a share, in the second quarter. Well, that and the $198 million one-time charge it took to cover costs stemming from those previously admitted defective notebook chips coupled with – its CEO said – a supposedly weaker worldwide PC market and Nvidia’s miscalculations of AMD’s pricing pressures on its desktop GPU business. read more ...
