Officials in the United Arab Emirates say the country's financial institutions remain healthy despite growing fears the global credit crisis will hurt the booming Gulf economy. Emirates Central Bank Governor Sultan Bin Nasser AL-Suwaidi said Saturday that "national and foreign banks in the UAE enjoy a strong financial position," according to a statement released to state news agency WAM. Most holdings in UAE banks are located within the country rather than abroad, and "their parties are known and sound, contrary to what is there in other economies," AL-Suwaidi added. Those comments came just days after Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid AL-Maktoum, who is vice president and prime minister of the UAE and the ruler of Dubai, said the country's economy is able to weather the economic turmoil rocking markets around the world. "Our national economy, banking sector and financial markets are sound. They draw their strength from a long-term vision, boosted by flexible legislation that protect(s) local and foreign capital," Sheik Mohammed was quoted by WAM as saying. ...

Former Toronto manager John Gibbons returned to the majors Monday when he was hired by the Kansas City Royals to be their bench coach. The Royals also hired Kevin Seitzer, who was an All-Star third baseman with Kansas City and is still popular in the area, as hitting coach. He was fired last July as Arizona's hitting coach. Dave Owen, the Royals' bench coach last season, will become the third-base coach. Seitzer replaces the fired Mike Barnett. With Gibbons and Seitzer, Royals manager Trey Hillman added a wealth of big league background to his staff. Hillman was the only major league manager last year who had neither coached nor played in the big leagues, and always bristled when anyone suggested his lack of experience might be a drawback. The Royals went 75-87 in the AL Central, one game ahead of Detroit. ...

I've been checking in with my usual Twins blogs over the past week and a half since we lost our playoff chances.  I like to stay up to date on what the Twins community thinks about their team. This evening, as I was checking in, it occurred to me that I had no idea what was happening in the ALCS/NLCS games.  I had paid just enough attention to know who was in it, but short of that, I didn't know how many games had been played, what the series were at, etc.  I live in Chicago, so I had my fair share of entertainment in the ALDS/NLDS watching the Cubbies and Sox self-destruct, but after the Sox were out, I stopped caring.  Is my lack of interest in this year's playoffs due to the Twins being out of it?  Perhaps it's because there are no teams left that are geographically close to me?  Maybe it's because I have a vested interest in the AL Central and with the Sox out, don't care? So my question to you is this:  How closely are YOU watching the playoffs this year? Poll How closely are you watching the playoffs this year? Watching every/most AL and NL games Watching an occasional AL or NL game Watching the AL games only Checking the scores each day, but not watching Checking scores/highlights occasionally Not paying attention   3 votes | Results ...
