Akamai's CFO, J.D. Sherman said that over the last couple years consumers were flocking to broadband and that was growing the volume of Internet consumption extremely rapidly, but, for now that time is over. And as a content delivery network, Akamai has to wait for the next "inflection point," which Sherman believes will be with HD video streaming online. That slowdown, combined with the economic climate and the tough competition in the content delivery marketplace (including newcomer AT&T) is putting pressure on Akamai's business, Sherman said. LIVE: Q/A starts: Mark: Akamai is the leading content delivery network on the Internet today. J.D.: Background on company -- 10th year in existence. Incorporated on August 20, 1998. Close to $800 million revenue. Video: Media growth simplistically has three elements that are going to drive it -- the amount of users, the amount of time they spend online, the quality or the richness online. The number of users are growing -- an organic growth not a rapid growth. Time consumed grows geometrically. We believe that over time the IP will consume more and more of the amount of media that people consume in their home. Quality right now is in the 300-400 kb range. HD takes that to 500-1000 gb range. As the time grows (from 10-15 mins to a couple of hours). So the time increases and the quality increases, now you're talkking about 500 TB per second. When you think about the media business, we think ...

Rebecca Engmann Darst contributed to this report. Lehman Brothers ( LEH) – Shares in Lehman Brothers bounded sharply out of the gate with a 10% gain to $15.09 on speculation that the firm might be bought by Korea Development Bank. The move in Lehman comes a day after respected analyst Richard Bove floated the notion of Lehman’s vulnerability to a hostile takeover bid, and amid generally bullish action in financials today on back of interest rate-dovish and largely reactive, rather than proactive, rhetoric from Fed chairman Ben Bernanke speaking in Jackson Hole.  Response from option traders has been interesting, not least in the October contract, where one fund a trader appears to have played against the “easy-fix” rumors by buying a long 8870-lot put spread between strikes 2.50 and 5.00. This trade was entered for a 25-cent debit, creating an initial break even of $4.75 – requiring an almost disastrous $10 drop. The trader stands to gain as much as $2.25 – 9 times the money at risk – if Lehman shares make a cataclysmic drop, but don’t break below the $2.50 level. In another October play, traders may have sold 27-strike calls at 22 cents apiece in order to fund a long collar between strikes 12.50 and 20 – a protective play on an underlying stock position that would otherwise cost 33 cents to put on. Content distribution firm Limelight Networks (LLNW) has been through a lot of pain its first year as a public company, including missed quarters and a messy patent war with its much larger archrival Akamai (AKAM). But now it's time to buy LLNW, says Jefferies analyst Katherine Egbert. Limelight shares, which had lost more than 80% of their value since last July, perked up 6.6% today to $3.86. Why buy? Egbert says: Limelight is going to be streaming a LOT of video for NBC's Olympics coverage -- 2,200 hours of live streaming and 3,000 hours of on-demand replays/highlights/etc. -- and it's "highly unlikely" the current Wall Street consensus is taking that into account. Egbert estimates that LLNW gets 23 cents of revenue for each hour of on-demand viewing and 36 cents for every hour of live viewing. [Hard to guess how much people will watch, but we've tested NBC's site out -- and the video looks really good.] A majority of Limelight customers are no longer using the systems covered by Akamai's patent. Once the judge gets around to ruling on pending motions, it's "highly likely" Limelight will have no customers left on the offending systems. Which means Limelight -- or anyone who acquires Limelight -- would have limited damages to pay Akamai. She thinks Akamai should be the one buying Limelight, to "restore some pricing integrity in the CDN market" by reducing the number of big players. Egbert raised her price target to $6 from $4, and ...

Akamai Technologies (AKAM) shares are up 6.3% today to $24.02 on "renewed takeover chatter," according to Credit Suisse. With a $4 billion market cap/$3.7 billion enterprise value, the content delivery network could be an easy acquisition for many big telecom operators or Internet companies. So who might buy? The usual suspects include AT&T, foreign telcos, or possibly Internet giants like Microsoft. But so far, we haven't seen any specific names being tossed around with today's rumor. Another possibility for the stock jump: Potential good news from Akamai's patent case with rival Limelight Networks. Know more? AKAM was an earnings gap which set up a perfect 3 pivot point base & break on the 1 minute time frame below. If we look at the 15 minute time frame, it's obvious that the down sloping 5 period EMA was still quite a distance from price when the trade triggered. When that happens, I still take the trade based on the ABC/123 setup - series of lower highs/3 pivot base. I look for a wide BO bar to pull the 5 EMA down. In the case of AKAM , the BO didn't close on its lows and the EMA was still trailing, so some consolidation was expected. I keep an eye on the 1 minute time frame to monitor retracements - the 20 ema /1 min. should hold as resistance on a successful trade. I was sort of anxious to take a partial because price never tagged the 5 EMA (15 min.), and I knew that eventually, it would. Took a partial as price approached $23.00 and was stopped out about an hour later. After a 38% retracement of the ORH to the midday lows, AKAM carved out a shooting star on the 15 min. and set up another short. I traded it as a trend line break on the 1 min. (see last chart). It didn't produce a big move, because buyers stepped in at $23.00 again. So we didn't reach the target 38% Fib. extension of the previous day high to the ORL , but a good trade just the same. ...

FSLR Earnings: Solar cell maker First Solar Inc (FSLR.O: Quote , Profile , Research , Stock Buzz ) reported a 57 percent jump in quarterly profit on Wednesday, blowing past Wall Street estimates on rising demand for renewable energy sources. Its shares rose 7.5 percent in extended trade following the announcement. Second-quarter net income increased to $69.7 million, or 85 cents per share, from $44.4 million, or 58 cents per share, a year ago. Wall Street analysts, on average, expected earnings of 57 cents per share, according to Reuters Estimates. Revenue totaled $267 million, while analysts, on average, expected $217.3 million. The latest result was nearly three-and-a-half times revenues of $77.2 million in the second quarter of last year. First Solar has been the darling of the clean technology sector since it went public in 2006. The stock has gained nearly 7 percent this year, while most other solar stocks have logged sharp declines. The Phoenix company's thin-film photovoltaic solar cells, which turn sunlight into electricity, are cheaper to produce than the traditional silicon-based cells that dominate the market. Earlier this month, First Solar said it would supply the first two megawatts of Southern California Edison's (EIX.N: Quote , Profile , Research , Stock Buzz ) 250-MW rooftop solar generation project. First Solar shares rose to $306.50 in extended trade after closing at $285 on Nasdaq, up 2.7 percent. First Solar (FSLR.O: ...
