While cheap netbooks are all the Rage these days, just a few months ago the attention was being lavished on expensive, high-end thin and light notebooks. Namely the 13.3" screen Apple MacBook AIr and Lenovo ThinkPad X300. Fast forward several months and several hundred stock market points lower and expensive laptops don't seem quite as appealing. New York Times reporter Michelle Higgins spent a couple of days posing as an American Airlines flight attendant. She seems to have come away from the experience with more respect for flight attendants, not so much for some passengers: And though the other flight attendants knew I was a ringer, the passengers did not. Thus I got a crash course in what airline personnel have to put up with these days -- and, after just one day on the job, began to wonder why the phrase "AIr Rage" is only applied to passengers. Believe me, there were a few people along the way, like the demanding guy in first class who kept barking out drink orders as the flight progressed (until he finally passed out), whom I would have been more than happy to show to the exit, particularly when we were 35,000 feet in the AIr. It so happens that she worked three flights -- Dallas to New York to Dallas to New York over two days. Ms. Mitchell, who writes the "Practical Traveler" column for the NYT, comes away from the experience wiser and much, much more tired. Is there a less-enviable, more-stressful occupation these days than that of a flight attendant? Just the look on their faces as they walk down the aisle -- telling passengers that no matter how many times they try to squeeze them in, their suitcases are not going to fit into the overhead bin, or explaining yet again that they will not get a single morsel of decent food on this three-hour flight -- tells you all you ... Naomi Campbell is planning to give some of her designer clothes to the people she met in a soup kitchen. The British supermodel was so impressed by her co-workers at London’s Whitechapel Mission - where she was carrying out community service as part of her sentence for an AIr Rage incident earlier this year - she is planning a wardrobe clearout in their honor. Naomi said: “The people at Whitechapel are brilliant, they’re coming tonight – they’re lovely people. They’re wonderful people and I’m so happy and blessed I’m going to now round up all the clothes and stuff that I don’t want and get them down to them.” The 38-year-old beauty also insisted her community service has changed her for the better. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week wasn’t even officially kicking off until the next morning, but Thursday night was a Manhattan meet-and-greet marathon of competing parties that required the fashion flock to employ nearly Olympian-level stamina in order to hit all the hot events. Our first stop was at 6:15 p.m. When the doors opened onto the men’s designer collections floor at Barneys New York, it was clear the evening would be anything but normal. Milling around the basket of a vintage hot AIr balloon were a crowd of well-dressed folk, including Barneys creative director Simon Doonan and rapper/actor Andre Benjamin, nattily attired in a battered straw hat, red rugby shirt and dark denim trousers held up by braces (braces are suspenders held on by buttons instead of clips, btw). It was a launch party for Benjamin’s first clothing line — the updated retro rugbyesque Benjamin Bixby — which is exclusive to Barneys New York and hit shelves there just days before. "It’s much harder to make clothes than to make music," Benjamin told the Rage in between posing for photos and greeting well-wishers. "With music, if you don’t like the way something sounds you can just do it over and over again in the studio until you do. With clothes, you don’t have that luxury.
