Before we get too entirely riled up about China rousting its beggars, pickpockets and, most recently, its petitioners from the streets of Beijing in an attempt to pretty up the city's image for the Olympics, let's take a quiz. When does this headline date from? "City Polishing Its Image For Olympic Visitors" If you guessed 1984, you are a smart reader who looked at the title to this blogpost. The Los Angeles Times story from July 21, 1984, about preparations for our own Summer Games, starts out like this: "Los Angeles police have added 30 horse-mounted officers downtown and stepped up their stopping nd questioning of Skid Row homeless in an effort to clean up the city in time for the Olympics....Many of the homeless--most often drunks, the mentally ill or others down on their luck--have apparently relocated to other downtown areas to escape the police pressure." It goes on to quote a police captain saying, memorably, "We're trying to sanitize the area." Certainly, nothing on the same scale as Beijing is attempting. But among our memories of the tremendously successful Summer Games , let's not forget to include a sliver of embarrassment about the people we tried to sweep aside. *Photo:  TEH ENG KOON / AFP / Getty Images ...

While putting together AMG Loves 1984, we took more than a few trips to YouTube to remember and discover the classic, quirky, and sometimes obscure videos made for the year’s music. 1984 was right in the middle of MTV’s heyday — not to mention the heyday of music video programming blocks like Night Tracks [...] ...

Thanks to George Orwell, 1984 seemed destined to be a gloomy, ominous year -- and there was some darkness, thanks to Echo & the Bunnymen and the Cure lurking in the background, but 1984 was much, much more than murky English mope rock. This was the year that gave us such blockbusters as Purple Rain, Born in the U.S.A., 1984, and Like a Virgin while also giving us such major underground touchstones as Let It Be, Reckoning, The Smiths, Zen Arcade, and Double Nickels on the Dime, as well as the first undisputed full-length hip-hop masterpiece, Run-D.M.C. — every one of them albums that defined the decade. But 1984 wasn’t just about canonical LPs. If anything, the singles of ‘84 were even greater than the albums, as this year saw a perfect storm of Top 40, album rock, MTV, and college radio hits, each one seeming better than the next. ...

While some people may choose to mark the release of a DVD of the Terminator TV show by buying in a pizza, UK academic roboticist Noel Sharkey wrote a report on the future of policing robots. Not for free of course - Warner paid him to. Whatever you think of that arrangement, Sharkey, who has previously spoken out against military robots , still makes interesting points. He predicts a growing role for robots in policing between now and 2084. And his vision of the future is not particularly warming. Sharkey told me that, although nothing surprises him about robots anymore, reviewing developments for the report did send a shiver down his spine when he realised humans will still be in control. "I am not a believer in AI coming close to organic intelligence or overtaking it, and so my realisation was that whoever controlled the robots would have control of society. They [humans] would be able to enforce arbitrary laws." Sharkey's predictions are more cyberpunk than space opera . Humans will still call the shots, and robots will enhance their failings as much as, if not more than, their merits. All futurology is doomed to fail in one way or another. I think it's often best to ignore the content of predictions and look at how they're framed instead. With that in mind, I asked Sharkey why he chose 2084 as the end-point of his timeline - by which point he says soft humanoid robots will be walking the streets, making arrests and questionin ...

Take our ink-stained hands and join us at the OldStand, where Jon McMillan goes to remind everyone what an honest-to-goodness music magazine is supposed to look like. Lots of Huey Lewis (and the News) news lately, so let's go back to the source and see what all the hype is about. On the one hand, reading about Huey Lewis made me feel old because it reminded me of the dog-eared insert of my brother's Sports cassette; on the other hand, I felt young because none of the post-60s, hippie-vs-non-hippie music wrangling that apparently defined Huey's early career was so goddamn boring. Huey Lewis, on the third hand, is old as fuck. But wait, let's look a bit closer at veteran Chris Connelly's (of MTV and ESPN fame) piece: "If you were looking to cast a rock & roll idol, Huey Lewis would probably not make the final cut. He's a strong, yet somewhat one-dimensional singer; he's handsome but older looking than the average rock star; and he dances about as well as Menudo -- which is to say not very well. But despite those drawbacks - and a live show that seems a tad padded with instrumental soloing -- he gets his wildly enthusiastic, predominately female audiences where he wants them: on their feet." Connelly later goes on to describe Huey's music as an "appealing blend of non exploitative sexulity and hearty fellowship." This, only a few months after describing the band as "a few bricks shy of a load" in his unflattering 2.5-star review (onl ...
