A SLOW-MOVING LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM SOUTH OF NEWFOUNDLAND BROUGHT INCLEMENT WEATHER TO MUCH OF THE ISLAND FOR THE MAY LONG WEEKEND. RAIN, DRIZZLE AND FOG WAS PREDOMINANT OVER THE AVALON PENINSULA, WHILE OTHER COASTAL AREAS OF EASTERN NEWFOUNDLAND ALSO RECEIVED RAIN OR A COMBINATION OF RAIN AND SNOW. In Gander, 58 centimetres of snow fell between Saturday morning and Sunday night, with peak snowfall on Saturday evening. Environment Canada meteorologist Jody Boyd said the snowfall blew away the prior record. "Our normal snowfall for the month of May is just 13 centimetres, and the highest monthly total in the past was set in 1972," Boyd said. "For the whole month, it was 49 centimetres, so we beat that over the span of 36 hours." The Victoria Day long weekend is the kickoff to summer but it looks like winter in central Newfoundland and Labrador. 54 cm of snow fell in Gander over a 20 hour period this weekend. Environment CAnada Meteorologist Wanda Rideout says the total climbs to 66 cm if you include the snow that had already melted before the worst of the storm hit. Those numbers shatter the old record of 29cm for Gander's greatest May snowfall, recorded in 1945. ...

Here's a video clip of an Airbus A380 , the world's largest commercial jetliner, taking off from a heavily snow-laden Cologne airport in Germany. I reckon it cleared the runway and its verges for the next several aircraft to follow it! That's quite a cloud of snow it kicked up. The calender does say May, but it is still very much winter in several parts of northern Canada. The tiny Hamlet of Rankin Inlet on Hudson Bay in Nunavut was hit this week by a record setting blizzard. Nearly 100cm of snow (40 inches) piled up over a 3 day period. Keep in mind the normal yearly snowfall for Rankin Inlet is 119.7cm according to Environment Canada, so that represents about 75% of their annual total in one storm. Daily and monthly records were also established as well as the most snow on the ground in any season at 150cm. Roads and businesses were closed as fierce wind piled the snow into 15 foot drifts. The snow was brought into the region on easterly winds blowing off Hudson Bay. Normally the bay would be frozen solid but with large portions not covered by ice, the moisture was available. Another 10cm of snow fell yesterday. This morning it is -2C and still snowing lightly. Montreal weekend weather... Thankfully there is no snow in our forecast. The first long weekend of the summer is upon us with dry weather and mild temperatures expected. It wont be a perfect weekend, but I expect more sunshine than clouds and just a slight chance of an afternoon shower, especially by Monday. Temperatures will be either side of 20C from today through Monday. Overnight lows will be cool around 7C.
