Veteran comedy writer says show about an ageing gay couple would make John Inman look restrained ITV sitcom Vicious, featuring Sir Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi as an ageing gay couple, has been accused of peddling homosexual cliches that would make "John Inman look restrained". Barry Cryer, the veteran comedy writer and performer, said Vicious had fallen into the trap of trying to be funny all the time rather than developing characters people could identify with. "A sitcom with two old gays could be really good and moving. With two great actors in Sir Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi it should be fantastic," Cryer writes in the latest Radio Times. "But it was insult, insult, insult every other line. You don't believe in them … it made John Inman look restrained." Cryer, 78, whose credits include The Two Ronnies and The Morecambe & Wise Show, said Vicious was part of an era of "back-to-basic sitcoms" including Mrs Brown's Boys and The Wright Way which had forgotten the importance of "great characters trapped in a situation". "It's a serious business writing comedy. You don't necessarily need funny lines all the time. The key is to create characters. Characters people can identify with. But right now we've gone back at least 30 years in terms of format," he added. "The great sitcom writers of the past didn't think jokes were remotely important." Soon you’ll be calling actor Nick Zano just plain ol' "Nicky." The "Happy Endings"/"2 Broke Girls"/"90210" star is teaming up with his real-life pal and "10 Years" co-star Channing Tatum for his eponymous sitcom. According to Deadline , "Nicky" will be based on Nick's own real-life experiences of growing up in the Garden State around the seven women, of many generations, in his family who helped make Nick—er, we mean Nicky—the guy he is today. The series will follow the 30-year-old character as he plans to finally leave the nest...but is wrangled into staying longer than expected to help raise his little sister. The report notes that former MTV VJ and producer Channing—along with their other friend, "Magic Mike" screenwriter Reid Carolin— have been looking for a vehicle to tell Nick's story for some time. No additional details about the series, like which network the sitcom might air on, have been locked down yet. Full disclosure: As a New Jersey native myself, the prospect of Nick representing our fine state on the small screen is an exciting idea. I just hope he keeps it real and the show has all the authentic flair that New Jersey is known for. I expect lots of trips to the mall, an episode or two held down the Shore and, of course, at least one antics-filled episode about heading to a Bruce Springsteen concert. The supposedly explosive leaks of Edward Snowden are turning out to include a lot of hot air. The Guardian is now reporting that the U.S. government eavesdrops on the Russian government (it would be worrisome if that were not the case) and that the U.K. listened in on delegates from various countries at a G20 summit (meh). C-NET reported, incorrectly, that the NSA had admitted to listening in on domestic phone calls without warrants, and then fiddled with its headline and added an update in an attempt to fuzz over the falsity of the original story. (Meanwhile, Scientific American, my former employer and C-NET's partner, maintains the original story and headline on its front page.) Valid concerns about privacy and civil liberties are getting buried under a blizzard of ill-informed hokum and paranoid conspiracism of left and right, mixed with propaganda victories for the Chinese and Russian governments (and who knows what information Snowden is giving Beijing). I learned today that Mandalay Sports Media is developing a television comedy based “loosely” on the life of Los Angeles Times sports columnist T.J. Simers, whose work entertains me greatly and annoys the heck out of countless sports people, and an occasional reader. I hope the show gets made and is a huge success. If it were based on my life, it would be a really, really, really big hit. But only if someone else wrote it, and made up a bunch of really, really, really funny stuff. Dabney Coleman as Slap Maxwell History tells us comedies about sportswriters do about as well as comedies about earthquakes. OK, “Everybody Loves Raymond” was on CBS for 10 seasons. But only maybe three episodes ever featured Ray Romano’s character, you know, working. The show was about the petty, juvenile Ray Barone arguing with his wife, his brother, and his parents. He had kids on the show, but they were seldom seen. I didn’t much like it. The classic “The Odd Couple,” obviously had very-funny Jack Klugman as Oscar Madison. But the show was as much about sportswriting as “The Big Bang Theory” is about theoretical physics. There was a one-season sitcom called “Listen Up! ” based “loosely” on the life of then-Washington Post sports columnist Tony Kornheiser. Jason Aleander of “Seinfeld” fame was the star.
