Cloud service providers store data all over the globe, and are constantly moving that data from one datacenter to the next for reasons as wide-ranging as cost considerations and redundancy requirements. Does this mean that the requirements outlined in varying data residency laws and privacy regulations are directly at odds with how cloud computing works? The question is an especially delicate one when the cloud service provider stores and processes data in a jurisdiction that is perceived to have far less stringent privacy and data protection requirements – or may allow government agencies far broader data subpoena powers. Since the cloud computing model relies on distributed infrastructure to generate cost and flexibility benefits for customers, building a datacenter in each data residency jurisdiction quickly becomes cost-prohibitive. And, applying a set of constraints to the movement of data introduces an additional layer of complexity that further erodes the value proposition of cloud computing for customers. read more ...

Yesterday, we checked out the opening of Publication Studio’s weeklong residency at Eyebeam . What we saw? Both the concise, neatly-printed editions that Publication Studio is known for and a series of reimagined covers to classic books from the likes of Phil Elverum, Diana Balmori, and Luc Sante. Artist Kristin Lucas had a book for sale. The covers on display had aesthetics that ranged from the literal to the abstract. Luc Sante designing a George Orwell cover? Excellent. An employee’s satisfying the employer’s residency requirement is critical to his or her continuation in employment 2013 NY Slip Op 03230, Appellate Division, Fourth Department The City of Niagara Falls’ Local Law No. 7 requires City employees to establish and maintain residency within the City throughout the term of their employment. "residency" for the purposes of this action was defined as "the actual principal place of residence of an individual, where he or she normally sleeps; normally maintains personal and household effects; the place listed as an address on voter registration; and the place listed as his or her address for driver's license and motor vehicle registration, if any." * The City determined that one of its employees [Petitioner] principally resided outside the City in the Town of Niagara. Concluding that Petitioner did not comply with its residency policy, the City terminated her employment. Petitioner challenged the City’s decision. Supreme Court granted her petition and directed the City to reinstate her to her former position. The Appellate Division disagreed with the Supreme Court’s ruling and vacated its decision.
