Source: news.wbfo.org --- Tuesday, May 21, 2013
Closing arguments have wrapped up in a lawsuit challenging the New York Police Department's stop-and-frisk policy. Plaintiffs say the majority of the stops involved black and Hispanic men. But New York City says there's no racial motivation whatsoever. Host Michel Martin asks the tricky question: how exactly do you prove racial profiling? ...

Chuck Grassley (R-IA) One of Senator Chuck Grassley’s (R-IA) many sticking points with the immigration reform bill in the Senate Judciary Committee is that certain groups should receive more scrutiny because of the Boston Marathon bombing. He offered an amendment to that effect, that would “permit Federal law enforcement officers to take into account an individual’s country of origin.” Grassley defended his amendment by asking, “what does country of origin have anything to do with profiling?” In response, Gang Of Eight member Sen. Dick Durbin (D-ILL) tore down Grassley’s definition of racial profiling, explaining that the language in the bill is a necessary protection and even the same practice embraced by Bush administration officials: DURBIN: Senator Grassley, let me say two or three things about this. First, there is no mention of country of origin in the language of this bill. We specifically do not mention country of origin and that was the basis of your argument. And so I’d ask you and your staff to take another look at it. We do not raise that issue. Number two, the language – [...] GRASSLEY: Why then don’t you mention it as — so that it’s – DURBIN: Because what we’ve done is specify that you cannot use race or ethnicity. Now, how did we come up with race or ethnicity? This was the standard established – GRASSLEY: I’m not arguing that point I think you’re right by including that in the bill. But what does country of o ...

The Reluctant Fundamentalist, based on the best selling novel of the same name, takes a look at how the world changed, and how those changes affected a young Pakistani man both in the way he is treated by the United States on the whole, and by his friends, co-workers and girlfriend. Changez (Riz Ahmed) is a brilliant young Pakistani man who makes his way to America to chase his dream of becoming rich and powerful. Not only is he among the top in his class at school, but he manages to get a high paying job at a brokerage. As he climbs the corporate ladder the unfortunate events of 9/11 occur, and his world slowly starts to spiral downwards. He is harassed by airport security, employees at businesses he is downsizing, and even his own girlfriend. Changez starts to see the world differently, and when his conscience starts to tell him that the work he does brings him dishonor he quits and returns home to Pakistan. It’s there that he starts to gain a reputation as being sympathetic towards a radical terrorist organization, and when an American citizen is kidnapped the CIA send an agent in to see what he knows. The Reluctant Fundamentalist would have been a better story if it was true. racial profiling unfortunately has been rampant since 9/11, and there are plenty of stories that can be told. Watching a true story such as Changez’ on a news program such as Dateline or 20 ...
