All that pressure explodes in the lyrics: "You took this love and you tore it apart!" guitarist Zack Lopez bellows. It sounds like a bad romance, but dude's shutting that down: "No more," he repeats to close out the chorus. Way to respect yourself, fellas. With its throat-shredding vocals and full-on rock assault, the song sounds like Perry Ferrall jamming with Soundgarden -- not bad for a two-man crew. Listen to middle class Rut's "No More" after the jump. "No More" is the follow-up to track "Aunt Betty," a March single that churns like butter. The band's new album, Pick Up Your Head , arrives May 21 on Bright Antenna Records. It's the 2011 Artist to Watch's sequel to their 2010 debut, No Name No Color . They'll promote the new set with a tour that kicked off with an SXSW gig alongside the Stooges and Japandroids , with their own headlining gigs in the U.S. and U.K. coming in May. Stock up on earplugs now. + Listen to middle class Rut's "No More." Photo credit: Steve Gullick/Bright Antenna Entertainment ...

They are also accompanied by an influx of foreigners, most of whom come from the crisis-ridden countries of Southern Europe. Many of the newcomers head to Rio to build an entirely new life for themselves. Cantagalo is now home to Spaniards, Italians, Argentineans and an Australian. In the neighboring favela of Pavão-Pavãozinho, a prominent immigrant from Germany has also found a place to live: the former senator of the interior in the city-state of Hamburg, Ronald Schill, who was once called “Judge Merciless” for his harsh rulings. Until recently, he was living in an apartment on the Copacabana. Now, he has purchased a small house in the favela. “Rents and purchasing prices are lower here than down below,” he says as he points to the asphalt jungle at his feet. It’s primarily the favelas in the southern zone of the city that attract the gringos. These areas are usually only minutes from the beach and offer some of the best views of Rio’s stunning urban landscape. Standing on his terrace, Baronio gazes at the Atlantic. It takes him only 15 minutes to get to the beach. “In Europe the rich would live here,” he says in amazement. ” - http://m.spiegel.de/international/world/a-900626.html (via m1k3y ) ...

Jeremy, a member of the Writers Guild, is a cancer survivor, and he gives credit to his union for negotiating his health care plan in a new video by the American Worker Project at the Center for American Progress Action Fund. His is just one of the moving stories told in three short videos released today. These profiles show how unions have helped workers in very different occupations — child care, freelance writing and taxi driving — gain and maintain wages and benefits that are key to a middle-class standard of living. On the flip side, La Tonya describes the hardship she's faced since public sector workers lost their right to collectively bargain in Wisconsin. These videos bring to life a huge body of research that finds that unions provide invaluable benefits for workers. CEPR regularly focuses on this topic and has many reports about how union membership increases workers' chances of having health insurance and a retirement plan. Some reports focus on specific groups of workers — African American, Latino, women, young, low Wage, service sector, and immigrant — and find the same positive effects across the board. ...

UPI/Kristoffer Tripplaar/Pool WASHINGTON, May 18 (UPI) — U.S. President Barack Obama said Saturday the U.S. economy needs to create more “good, middle-class jobs, and we need to do it faster.” In his weekly radio and Internet address, the president repeated much of what he said during a visit to Baltimore Friday, when he toured a company “that’s creating good jobs here at home by exporting digging equipment abroad.” He said once again government needs to focus on “making America a magnet for good jobs,” “making sure our workers have the education and skills they need to do those jobs,” and “making sure your hard work leads to a decent living.” In what may have been a reference to the focus among many in Washington on allegations of multiple scandals, Obama said “too often, our politics aren’t focused on the same things you are. Working hard. Supporting your family and your community. Making sure your kids have every chance in life.” “In a little over three years, our businesses have created more than 6.5 million new jobs,” he said. “And while our unemployment rate is still too high, it’s the lowest it’s been since 2008. But now we need to create even more good, middle-class jobs, and we need to do it faster.” The president said corporate profits have “skyrocketed to all-time hi ...

President Obama has been visiting cities across the country as part of his “middle class Jobs and Opportunities Tour” to highlight the innovations taking place in the U.S. to create jobs or teach skills needed to fill opportunities for middle class families. On Friday, the president wrapped up the tour’s second stop in Baltimore, where he visited Ellicott Dredges, a factory that exports digging equipment abroad. Also in Baltimore, the president read with children and visited at a program that helps low-income earners get more training and guidance to find work opportunities. “More than anything,” President Obama says of the tour, “the American people make me optimistic about where we’re headed as a nation. Especially after all we’ve been through the past several years. And that should encourage us to work even harder on the issues that matter to you.” Touting the Administration’s progress — lower unemployment, increased corporate profits, a “healing” housing market and “shrinking” deficits — the president says both parties still need to continue to work to generate more jobs even faster. “And I’m going to keep trying ...

Source: www.realclearpolitics.com --- Saturday, May 18, 2013
White House: In this week's address, President Obama talked about his belief that a rising, thriving middle class is the true engine of economic growth, and that to reignite that engine and continue to build on the progress we've made over the last four years, we need to invest in three areas: jobs, skills and opportunity. PRESIDENT OBAMA: Hi, everybody. Over the past few months, I've laid out a series of commonsense ideas to reignite the true engine of our economic growth: a rising, thriving middle class. The way I see it, there are three areas where we need to focus. One: making America a magnet for good jobs. Two: making sure our workers have the education and skills they need to do those jobs. And three: making sure your hard work leads to a decent living. I've also been visiting cities across the country that are doing some interesting and creative things along these lines. On Friday, I stopped by a factory in Baltimore that's creating good jobs here at home by exporting digging equipment abroad. I read with young kids in a pre-K program, where kids are getting a head start learning the skills they'll need to succeed in life.
